@Whitey, considering I'm not upgrading to a 4 anytime soon, feel free to borrow my chainring, or hell, my entire bike.  I believe it's a 50x15 with a 165 crank.

I have an extra 14 cog and you can also borrw whatever size chainring you want. I am sure that I'll use my 49 for the team sprint, but otherwise I have 48, 50, 51 and 52 available (provided you use 1/8" chain and 144BCD crank)

@kieran - As a bit of a neophyte in the world of allen-wrench gear shifting, I think I'll just rustle up a 50 and a 14. That'll give me the choice of 86.40, 90.00, 92.57, and 96.43.

Omniums use a curious width chainring bolt not shared with many others.

Here's the solution I came up with:

- Buy two sets of steel chainring bolts. One set of singles (as in the link above) and one set of doubles. Doubles are used by mountain bikers. Easily found in any shop that caters to that crowd.

- Use the backs from the singles and insert them into the crank arm and use the fronts from the doubles. They will stick through the back about 1-2mm, but they won't touch your chainstays.

- This way you get full thread engagement instead of 1 or 2 threads engaged. I use this system on my race bike.

Sounds good. Also, like Ragot said, he'll have some spare rings, as will I.

In addition to what everyone else said about the Omnium crank and chainrings, the bolts also struck me as hard to get off as you seemingly have to hold the back of them to unscrew them, which is a real drag.

If I do it, it would have to be a game-time decision. Too many moving parts for me to know now. Honestly, the idea doesn't thrill me, nor does it turn me off either. I'm likely racing CX that weekend and that will take priority. But if I can do both without disrupting family life too much...

Got excited today at the prospect of riding again on Herne Hill Velodrome, London's outdoor track.

Sounds so much better organized than when I lived here last (in 2008) - it's been resurfaced, has floodlights and changing rooms, and an organized training schedule (even in winter - you can ride it in the wet, apparently) - check out that timetable.

Something for its NYC counterpart to aim for, surely!

And of course, that's not to mention the prospect of the Olympic velodrome here when it opens to the public in March...
