Shotgun. I'll bring rollers.
I'll be there for sure I'm gonna take the train :) .. I'll see you guys there !
@Jeffrey White What are you thinking for tomorrow?
@JamesShaw: We're on. 11:30 my place.
Just got to the track - see you soon!
I should be there soon !

6 Days of Kissena Round 2

Weather was fine, mid 40’s with some wind, 5-10mph, certainly not the starched flags of round 1. Over 100 people registered so there was a big turnout. Cat 5 was maxed out at 30 riders and there were also enough Cat 4 women for two fields. There were more than 20 Cat 4 riders but they chose to keep it as one field which made for more interesting racing I think.

There were 4 Kissenas present @EduardSpektor and myself in the Cat 5 (different fields alas) @Jeffrey White in the Cat 4 and @EvelynDeLaRosa Evelyn in the women’s Cat 4.

The racing schedule was different to last week’s three scratch races. Started with a 5 lap tempo, 5 lap scratch and then an elimination.

I’ll speak for myself now. Two new race types for me so once again my expectations were to stay safe and work out what the hell was going on. Seeing Jeff work hard in his first race and knowing there were Kissenas who had some interest in what I was doing definitely made me try harder though.

I took the first sprint in the 5 lap tempo than hand back for a break having ridden around the outside in the wind. I probably rested for half a lap too much and the front group pulled away ad once again I wasn’t on a good wheel and there was little chance of me making it back and being competitive for any of the remaining sprints. I used the last lap as a cool down. I still scored some points with the first sprint though.

Race two was a scratch and having done a few last week set the target of finishing top 5. I had an idea of what might happen - probably a break with 2 to go but it didn’t happen. I sat in a good position for the whole race but got caught behind a less than ideal wheel when the pace picked up so had to take some wind on the back straight to make the top 5 and I didn’t have enough left to compete for the top 3 which were probably only a length or so ahead of me.

Final race was an elimination for which I’ve done a fair amount of you tube based homework. I promptly didn’t race to my plan sitting about 3rd wheel on the inside of the track. This was fine until the numbers went down and I realised half a lap too late. I probably had a few more goes in me so I was a bit annoyed. It was the longest race I’ve done and I definitely learnt some lessons.

It was really great to have some team mates there to discuss the racing, tactics and who to follow. I can’t overstate how awesome that was and even better for me because I got a lift with Jeff - thanks.

As I said last week, Kim Geist was there she looked so comfortable at all times. For all the Kissena ladies, next week (Saturday I believe) King Kog are paying for all women’s entrance fees so find a track bike and get down there. Next week is also a Sat/Sun double header.

Round 3.....

This all happened on Saturday.

Got the track in good time at 1205 signed in etc. The weather was amazing. A little bit of wind and clear skies. Think it got up to 20 degrees even. Did a good 20 minutes or so of warm up. I've kind of developed a routine based loosely on what @JohnMalcolmson suggested. After the warm up I changed the gearing on my bike ready for racing. A good amount of people there again and 23 registered women which is a record I think so the ladies day incentive of free racing worked. @EvelynDeLaRosa and I were the only Kissenas. My race reports are as follows.

First race was a devil's scratch which the organiser made up. Basically it's an elimination race until a set number of people are left then it becomes a scratch race with the number of laps the same as the number of people. In my field of 14 or so it was 4. Went around trying to play the devil and sneaking past people which I did for a few laps. Felt quite fun and something I'd like to get better at but it meant I was in the wind a lot and far from the front it was alsoa much longer race to start with than normal so I felt a bit ropey. Although my warm up feels good its a good 30 mins before the first race and I can't seem to replicate the hack inducing efforts of a race. One of the stronger guys however got caught out pretty early, he was riding on the bottom and didn't take into account how many were left, I like to think partly because of me playing devil and sprinting out of last place right at the end but the succession of efforts took it's toll and I was done after that one.I probably finished 8/9th. So not great.

Race 2 was a 5 lap scratch race and after last week was targeting top 5. It played out fairly nicely, I was in a relatively good position. Some guys went off the front with a lap to go,  I didn't work hard enough to get on so just made fifth pretty easily, nearly 4th.

Race 3 was the big one. A 9 lap win and out where the winner would be declared on lap 6, second on lap 3 and the rest of the positions on the last lap. This means that if you go for first place but don't make it you're potentially screwed and knackered. My plan was to go for third. Let most people tire themselves out and save myself for the final sprint. Three guys went for the first sprint, amazingly one of the guys that didn't win that got the second sprint. All the while I was just sat towards the back out of the wind. Moved up with 3 to go around the outside and a guy made a move out of turn 2 off the top. I jumped on his wheel and we got a gap. Fortunately for me he pounded the pedals hard for a whole lap so the gap stayed as it was. I offered him some encouragement and kept him up to date with chasers and with half a lap to go they started gaining on us. I offered more encouragement and we still had a gap going through turns 3/4. At this point I didn't think there was any chance that I wasn't going to win the final sprint for third. Moved outside of the helpful guy and went for the line. I knew that the 4 or 5 guys that had been finishing before me in other races were either out or tired. Hence my plan. So yeah, third place in that race which I'm chuffed about. Got lucky I guess.

@EvelynDeLaRosa had a nasty crash. Someone seemed to go down right in front of her and she was powerless. It didn't look great but she came out of it pretty unscathed. Big crack in the helmet though having gone over the handlebars.

Like I said this was all yesterday. I decided against riding today so this will b my mulligan. I'll be there both days next weekend though, maybe on the last day I'll ride a slightly bigger gear too. As I've said before it would be so awesome to get more Kissena jerseys in the mix. Even in the Cat 5 races it was plain to see how team work was going to be helpful.

Nice recap .! I'm so bad at those ! I'll be at the velo Wednesday and both days next weekend for sure.
@EvelynDeLaRosa glad you are ok.
@JamesShaw fantastic job, really nice recaps, looking forward to these every week. I always mean to make it out to the park to watch the races, but nice weather means spring gardening.  Maybe this weekend...

@EvelynDeLaRosa close call there, happy that you made it out okay.  The cracked helmet is worrisome though and hope you get it checked out juuuuust in case.

I'm hoping to be out there Wed night to cheer y'all on :)
@David Yang Glad you are enjoying them. I keep expecting to you see there enjoying the atmosphere either on a bike or watching.

I'll be racing both days next weekend with @EvelynDeLaRosa and hopefully some more.
Days 5 and 6..... I'll try and keep them snappy because I could wax lyrical about my time at the track indefinitely. @EvelynDeLaRosa and myself represented Kissena on both days and there was another guy who I didn't get to chat to, someone that I've not met before riding in the 4s. I also met a Kissena old boy but I can't remember his name. He was super nice though and great to chat to between races. He was very happy for me after race race 3. On to the racing.

Day 5
I left precisely at 1100 and the roads were definitely wet. In fact they got wetter and wetter the closer I got the velodrome.

Got to the track and the inner bit where you set up was pretty wet, last week it was so dry you could sit on the grass. Did my usual warm up.

Race 1 was a 3 lap scratch race which is good because it's short and gets the adrenaline and blood pumping hard without taking too much out of you. The fields were different today and the group was split into an A and B field based on season positioning I think. Anyway, I was kind of hoping to be put into the B as I'd have a much stronger chance of winning but I got slipped into the A field which is probably more fair.  I knew most of the people as they were in my field last week. It was a pretty good race, but my positioning just wasn't very good, there was a slightly older guy who wasn't holding the wheel in front but not enough space for me to take it so I ended up going back to just go around him when the speed increased. I ended up going a long way round the outside, probably an extra 20m or so I think, guess what? I finished 5th and about 15m behind 3 and 4. Still felt good and gave me some confidence.

Second race was a snowball. I had no idea how to play it so I intended to go for some of the later laps but I didn't put in the effort to hold on to the front back when the pace started for laps 2,3 which meant I had a gap to cross, on my own, which I did. I think I finished 3/4th on the final sprint so got some points.

There was a massive crash in the ladies race. @EvelynDeLaRosa managed to avoid but I think there were two people with broken bones so pretty nasty. Totally avoidable too I've heard.

The last race was supposed to be a 7 lap scratch but because of the crash in the ladies race I mentioned it was cut to 5 laps. I was looking forward to 7 but 5 is also OK. It went off really well and we were riding as a perfect square 9 around the track, I was probably in the best position at the back on the outside. Obviously the speed picked up and I made sure I was following the stronger wheels such that I wouldn't get caught out. Eventually the speed got good and I was riding with two guys from the same team. I was sandwiched between the team mates. Coming onto the final straight I started to sprint and got around the guy who was leading easily enough but the guy behind me just pipped me at the line. It must have been inches. I tried to throw it over but I'm not really sure how and it felt like my shorts got caught on my saddle. We had a pretty high top speed though I think. It did feel really good to position properly though, first podium too. Also the guy who just pipped me managed to just beat me in one of the other races but I can't remember which now. The videos will show it.

I ended up finishing 3rd in omnium points which was awesome.

Day 4

Another 10 mile ride over, weather was very fine. Better than yesterday when I got caught out by the sun then. Today I went prepared however.

Arrived at the track at 1200 and did my usual warm-up then changed my gears which put me up to 86 inches up from 84 which I'd been riding previously (I think most other people in the Cat 5 race on 86). I've been trying to get my cadence on though.

First race was a 5 lap scratch which I was feeling good about at the start but for whatever reason it didn't go well and my legs didn't wake up to the effort. Might have been because I was pushing a slightly bigger gear. I think I finished out of the top 5.

In the gap I actually managed to have a good snooze without actually falling asleep. The atmosphere was so cool in the middle of the track.

On waking up I went into a 9 lap points race which wasn't something that I was looking forward to because I had no idea how I wanted to ride it. I didn't take any of the points but stayed with the main group the whole time. The last sprint cold have been interesting but I was in a bad position which is a shame because I felt like I had a lot of speed left in me.

Race 3 was a 7 lap scratch which I was excited for. After the 1st lap one guy went off the front. At some point I decided to chase looked back and no-one had come with me so I was right in the middle. I stupidly decided to sit there for way too long when I should have bust a gut to get on his wheel or pull up and join the main field. I eventually decided to ease up and then joined the main pack, we caught the leader but I was in a bad position again for the final sprint.

The field was definitely stronger than yesterday, several guys who had been winning previously but I definitely could have mixed it up with them on the right day. Unfortunately I only received participation points today but I think I still ended up 8th overall out of 52 registered riders. Overall I'm pretty happy with my first 5 days on the track and I feel I've learned an awful lot in that time.

I now get to upgrade to Cat 4 which just seems silly. I'm sure I'll work it out though.

Until next time (probably a week Wednesday). If anyone fancies it, as ever, let me know.

Awesome!
Hey guys, is the Kissena Velodrome always open and free or there is a special permit access/schedules to access?
@GiacomoVischi it's a public city park so it is free to use like any other park facility unless there is a reserved event happening (like races or clinics, etc.).

Thanks David!
Enjoy the track (even on a road bike)!  If Yacks brings me back my track bike in one piece maybe I'll join you.
Anyone (besides me) interested in racing the NY State Track Championships at the Kissena Velodrome?

I'm hoping to defend my state championship titles in the masters field.
Hey @mugwump I’ve been racing at Kissena this year a couple times a month. I am thinking about joining you that weekend.
Ugh. http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/olympic-champion-vogel-seriously-injured-in-track-crash/
Interested in giving Track a try and looking for a mentor. Any takers 😬?
Hey @Joshua Wilson I think I am the only one in the club who regularly races track. I’m only a cat 4, but I would be more than willing to show you around the track and give you some pointers. Also, keep your eyes out for clinics at the track. I attended a few last year and they each cost less than $20. Plus there are plenty of fixed gear bikes to borrow at the track.

Josh,, Robert, et al,

We try to have an annual day at the Velodrome on a March weekend day to work on technique--pacelining, attacking, countering, sprints.  We use road bikes.

It can be a departure point for then borrowing a track bike and giving oval racing a tilt.

If you can get to the track by 5:30pm on Wednesdays, I think that's late enough that someone could open a container for you to loan out a bike and still get bike time in before the races begin.

I think observing and racing are the best ways to learn.
Just a heads up, Pink Rhino are hosting their track clinic on Saturday and Sunday at Kissena Velodrome. Only one spot left on each day, and I'm not sure if they have loaner bikes left.

They do put on a good clinic. So if you are curious about track racing, definitely go check it out. If you don't like it, you never have to do it again. I really enjoyed racing track last year, and I can't wait to get back to it this year. I got to meet some real nice people, including my evil twin @RobertPeras.

So if you are itching for something new, go try it out.
Hey, Victor Campenaerts just set a new Hour Record! 55.089 kilometers. http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/campenaerts-breaks-bradley-wiggins-uci-hour-record/
That's right, you can watch the whole thing, but I suggest you forward to the last ten(ish) minutes (ignore the commentator)
