Awesome to Kissena representation out there today. Jeff, Ian, Adam, Patrick, Thierry
and I lined up for the 3/4 race. Lots of action from the get go. I think
everyone had a go at creating a break and we did a lot of bridging or
inititating. Adam's plan to "attack the s***" out of the bunch was
awesome to watch, and he really owned the front of the race all day —
gave it death on the last climb. Came down to a bunch sprint, fought my way up to the NYC Velo train (their new kit is pretty awful btw, a jazzy London Olympics look). Anyway all 5 of them lined up and very kindly lead me
out for the sprint. This week I'm thinking "I will not lead this out",
looking back, match sprint style, ready for someone else to start the
sprint, when two guys take a flyer through the corner on my
blind side. Jumped but couldn't catch before the line. 3rd again! Thanks to all, I owe you guys a beer! Cheers!

John-watching you match-sprint to third was incredible. Those guys who got the jump on the outside really had a huge start on you. To get 3rd was really, really impressive from where you were.
Sorry I wasn't really keyed in to the 'plan' or more assistance. I had one eye on next week and was more interested in going supra-threshold over and over again rather than saving it for a single, more feasible and well timed effort. I got what I wanted from the race at least! Surprised it didn't snap though. Only week of the three where it didn't...
I promise to be much better when we head up to GMSR, John. I'll actually race as opposed to just put finishing touches on my race prep for another event.
Finally, Jeff C was brilliant in this event. He was always top 15 and not only that, he did a tremendous job of lining me up for some of my many attempts off the front. Couple that to his (and John's- he's not just a sprinter) efforts at countering moves in conjunction with me we definitely made a good account of ourselves at least.
Looking forward to racing with these crushers in future, if I can hold the wheel...

John, Vlad, past racers, tell me more about the course, compare it to climbs we have around here?
Vlad, noticed one week you finished with the bunch. What was diff't about that week?

@David do the 3/4.
@Marc The course is mainly on small, narrow(ish), quiet, rural roads. With one stretch (maybe 5 miles) of decent 2 lane blacktop (also quiet).
Marshalling is excellent (because the state troopers help out - and this series benefits the family of one of them).
Commissaires really enforce the yellow line rule and regularly DQ people for infringement. So being able to move up a pack on small roads is a good skill to have.
There is a big ring climb just before the 2 lane blacktop. Probably half as long as PP but steeper. Followed immediately by a long shallow descent. Then a sharp 120 deg right immediately onto a small ring climb (maybe the 1/2/3 were in the big ring). This is maybe the same length as PP, but obviously much steeper. Then there is an annoying false flat for a long time before the turn towards home. The course is generally rolling and meandering left or right. Hence a decent break should be able to get out of sight quickly.
It always seems to be very windy - and last year that false flat was into a block headwind.

I was looking at this race for Saturday but I think it's going to be pretty damned cold (again). Around 11 am, Wunderground is showing 29 with 12mph winds. That sounds just cold enough to keep me from it and stay local.

Kind of an epic day. A thick candy coating of ice encased my bike and each individual spoke. Literally made my bike feel unbalanced. I survived though and was in the main group sprinting for 9th place after a break of eight got away. For me it's been a long time since I've raced a full race with competition of this caliber, and so I spent the last 24 miles of this race fighting off leg cramps, leaving me with nothing in the last 200 meters. I didn't see the official results, but looking at the video and handwritten notes, in the neighborhood of 15th seems about right.

Vans are sold out right now, so I'm sticking with my Branchbrook plan. If a van frees up, I'll get a call tomorrow. Will update here, but not very hopeful.
