my mom shared this with me... it's her subtle way to telling me to race faster.
Amazing, this article was printed in Dec 2008.

For those of you who haven't yet discovered this wonderful way to waste time, here's a great Tim Johnson interview after a disappointing 11th place finish in Colorado posted on cyclingdirt.org:

http://www.cyclingdirt.org/coverage/240311-USGP-New-Belgium-Cup-2011/video/509560-Tim-Johnson-Post-USGP-New-Belgium-Cup-Day-1

My favorite quote of the interview:

"With 3 laps to go...I just wanted to stop, but realizing that stopping would have been the absolute worst thing to do. Because, who stops cross racing? Cross races are only an hour; if you can't get through an hour of sucking...what the fuck, you gotta be able to do it."
Read on Cyclingnews.com :
"On Tuesday, it was announced that Bettini had paid out a tax settlement of two million euro to the Italian authorities. The Tuscan had been accused of evading €4.5 million of taxes between 2003 and the end of his racing career in 2008".

To have to pay such taxes, I wonder how much he was earning.

In 2009, Bikeradar wrote:

"Paolo Bettini has allegedly defrauded the Italian taxman out of €11 million"

Maybe he did not declare €11 million and owed €4.5 million of taxes?

The March [2007] issue of Cycle Sport magazine investigates the annual salaries of pro road stars (generally not public knowledge) and comes up with this top 10 (all figures in millions) :

1. Alejandro Valverde, 26, Spain, Caisse d'Epargne, $3.8
2. Paolo Bettini, 32, Italy, Quick Step, $3.3
3. Tom Boonen, 26, Belgium, Quick Step, $2.6
4. Alessandro Petacchi, 33, Italy, Milram, $2.2
5. Ivan Basso, 29, Italy, Discovery Channel, $2.0
6. Damiano Cunego, 25, Italy, Lampre-Fondital, $1.8
7. Alexandre Vinokourov, 33, Kazakhstan, Astana, $1.7
8. Robbie McEwen, 34, Australia, Predictor-Lotto, $1.6
9. Erik Zabel, 36, Germany, Milram, $1.6 (
10. Thor Hushovd, 29, Norway, Credit Agricole, $1.3
From my second favorite cx website to visit in fall/winter is a run-down of who they think are the best North American crossers this week:

Oops! Masters, heh.

From cyclingdirt...here's an interesting interview with an Elite Portland/Northwest crosser who decided to dip his toe-spikes in the muddy waters of New England cross racing. There are a few sideways jabs at Adam Myerson which are pretty amusing, but also a nice compare and contrast segment between the two mecca's of cross racing.

And this one is good because it's Myerson talking about bike handling in difficult conditions:

Here's an interesting article about winter nutrition:

@Nathaniel -- excellent article, thanks for posting.
@ caveman : the author mentioned lean animal protein, but also fruits and vegetables!

This reminded me of an interview of Jonathan Vaughter by "schmalz":

@Stephane --unga-bunga, me likey veggie too. Help caveman climb hillies long-time. Thankie for postie.
Several in the club, like Norm and Keith have already changed their diets to perform better. Don't forget that the interseason (I know more than a few crazy racers in the club have a very small one) is the right time to lose weight. IMHO, it's also the best time to experiment.
@Stephane -- if you can flash-freeze some seal blubber and bring it back with you --I'd love to try it!
@ Norm -- That might work, given the outside temperature, but in two weeks it will be low enough for riding with leg warmers but not for flash-freezing. This time I'll ride without gloves/leg warmers, etc. after eating the seal, to check whether it keeps me warm.

BTW, maybe you were riding or buffalo hunting and missed this segment on Oprah:

http://eater.com/archives/2010/01/27/michael-pollan-on-oprah-people-should-eat-more-seal-blubber.php

As Gerth Mulvad and Henning Sloth Pedersen, Doctors at the Department of Medicine,Dronning Ingrids Hospital, have written "The Inuit have always known that you need to eat seal and whale to stay in good health".
Someone probably posted this to the old yahoogroups listserv b/c its from 1996-2005, but I just read it and found some of the information interesting, some obvious, and some depressing.

Enjoy!

Oh, crap. I couldn't attach the pdf since it's over 782kb, but it's on this page:

Just stumbled across this one, while researching the mechanisms around why NSAID's can be dangerous.

As much as this woman is an incredible rarity and it is amazing that she has regained the use of her legs, I can't help but think that the WORST person in the world to become a professional cyclist would be a person who has developed no leg power, leg endurance or leg muscle coordination over the last 10 years. Odd.
Scary stuff

And I like that they included a picture of Sean Kelly's legs. His legs alone could probably strike fear in the competition.

We need a thread for great racing/training/worrying about training and bike fixing QUOTES.

Here is one from Kara Goucher's FB page:

"You can feel sore tomorrow, or you can feel sorry tomorrow. You choose."
Heh. Still giggling about the "can't pull, I'm fat". I'd forgotten all about it. Hadn't met you, but now I'm recalling the look on your face after I said that. You made this bizarre, utterly confused and simultaneously annoyed facial contortion and turned your hand up like "WTF?". Hahahahaha. I'm nothing if not occasionally entertaining. And perplexing. And fat.

Glad you still joined.

On the way back from Killington, Ariel-Mendez Penate (from Adler) was in the back seat. He made a comment lamenting his lack of friends - explaining how he had moved here recently and he was always on his bike so it was hard to be social.

"I'll be your friend" I said, in a kind but also condescending kind of way (kindness laced with condescension is really the most satisfying kind, I find)

And then he dropped the quote of the year, in my book:

"Dude I don't need friends, I need to get FASTER!"
