Good to know JP. Caroline's best friend married us, she went and got herself ordained in order to do so. If you look at the power dynamic that's relevant to the offense, I see a person riding a 44lbs bicycle and a person driving a multi-ton bus. The person driving the bus is in a position where he can afford to be somewhat blasé about the risks he's taking on the job, while the person on the bike cannot. But sure, if you want to point out that the guy with the money was honored and the guy working a straight job was convicted, I see that. But I think it was the right verdict regardless. Would the verdict have been the same if the victim had been an unemployed green-card holding Muslim from Africa and the bus driver a middle-aged white guy from Staten Island? I don't know.
Still, the penalty is almost laughably low. 45 days in jail for killing someone. Maybe a white driver wouldn't have been convicted. But that penalty is pretty minor considering that death was the result of his actions.
FWIW, while I believe that buses are essential to transit, I've seen far to many bus drivers run red lights to let bus drivers off the hook easily. I'm sure driving a bus is a hard job, but the danger buses present is real and the bus drivers union chief goes out of his way to malign cyclists and excuse scofflaw bus drivers.

I don't disagree with anything you've written here. My gripe is that even the sham "justice" is really only for sale at a price most can't pay and once again it's a brown guy being offered up as proof of "justice."
If the circumstances weren't so tragic I'd make a joke about my fainting couch.

Another usual concern, that she hints at, is that, generally a minimum salary is a good thing, but it will shut some teams, as they wont be able to meet the budget required. While less teams can be seen as a bad thing, it can also mean that we keep the teams that see real value in supporting their riders.

I'm glad it happened. I was doubtful that a minimum salary would happen, as I think too many pro riders, both male and female, are willing to race for free and aren't interested in 'sacrificing' their 'career' to get paid.

And then, the system might have taken most everyone back to step one, as then you'll have people making nothing racing as professionals. Hoping that doesn't happen.

Cyclingtips podcast made a similar point. They talked about Cofidis as an example- a non-world tour team with some talented riders and an invite to the Tour every year. I enjoyed this twitter thread... the times this weekend at Kona were nuts. The fact that the female and male gap is getting smaller is amazing.
Lots are mentioning the conditions might have been the best ever -- and everythings suggest that most of the gains were on the bike portion (which makes sense as it is the longest and most equipment dependent)
