I did - but you can't use them without the annual-membership key quite yet... I tried two different locations today with my credit card before figuring it out - and their help lines are "mysteriously" overloaded.
Not the smartest way to launch the program but once the kinks are worked out I'll be psyched to rock one of those FORTY FIVE POUND beasts around the park in KCC kit...

I saw people chugging them over the Manhattan bridge on my commute this morning. It was quite inspiring because I think you've got to believe in the cause to lug one over the bridge. I'm thinking citibike Strava segments. . .

Oh I pine for the days when Wall St workers held even a modicum of sartorial elegance. Unfortunately they all subscribe to the modern bland equalizer of American business casual these days.
However I like the idea very much. Maybe Charlie should add some extra fields, The Citibike gents as you describe, the tweed set with their deerstalkers and safety bicycles, and the williamsburg hipsters sporting tats and asymmetrical haircuts riding tall bikes.

I commuted to work yesterday and counted 23 Citibikes between Brooklyn and Midtown. The ones on the bridge were actually cruising along pretty well in the easiest gear.

i think we're onto something here. i think we should all wear kit. and film it to make a dramatic satirical video. a parody of red hook crit's video? with all the discussion of underground racing and dramatic shots of sweaty people, then pan out to show that they're going 2mph on a citi bike. then we can start talking about the merits of the basket.

Can someone explain how the 'key' works for the annual membership? I want to know how easy it would be to share it with my family. How about if it gets lost?

you can definitely share them, though the citi bike website explicitly says you cannot. if you lose your key they charge you $10 for a replacement.

that hurts. still, we can make a parody video. lots of serious commentary about bicycle racing. rapha-esque. but all the dramatic race shots will instead be comical shots of people pedaling furiously on citibikes or falling over.
do these stop working once they're taken a certain distance beyond the transponders? we could do a 9W ride

Keep in mind that the first 45 minutes are free (with membership) and then you pay a relatively hefty charge for each block of minutes after that. You can swap bikes or plug in the one you have for something like 5 minutes to reset. Long rides would get very expensive.

So.......CitiBike relay race from the furthest point in Brooklyn to the furthest point north in Manhattan.
- Break up into several teams, and hand-off the bikes at various pre-determined docking stations in the city.
- Minimum of 5 hand-offs/waiting periods before the "finish" station.
- Each team can choose its own station route.
- If you show up and there's no bikes - then you should have chosen a better directeur sportif/logistical soigneur.

DOT needs to step up and develop an app that tracks the fastest trips between stations citywide. it should allow you to select a starting station and ending station and it tells you the top 10 fastest trips between those two stations from undocking to docking. Like CitiBike Strava. But more hazardous.
