Nice guys! Congrats all around. Looking forward to reading race reports! Though which races are we talking about here Saturday in CP or Sunday in "The Weeds"
@Marc - today 's races at FBF for both.
FBF race this fine Sunday morning. 5s race was simple: one serious-ish attack by a Major Taylor guy on the 7 th or 8th lap, the rest of the time everyone was just trying not to flat it seemed. Inevitable field sprint where I learned that if the guy in front of you let's a gap open in the final turn, your race is over because the guys in front of him are already far gone. I finished 15th-ish.
Cat 4 Race report.
Had a killer today line-up consisting of Yacks, Patrick Grehan, Whitey, and myself. As a team we definitely made our presence known with everyone(except me) dishing out some serious field splintering attacks. Last couple of weeks I've been super busy at work. That combined with all my workouts having been more on the short and intense side recently(anaerobic?), I knew if I was going to do anything it would be in a sprint. Defintately one of those "... you race smarter when you don't feel so strong" situations. I was very conservative most of the race. Jeff and I tail gunned for a while, moved up, dropped back, etc. Rinse and repeat. For whatever reason, certainly not from a lack of effort from our team,  a breakaway didn't form. At 4 laps two go I'm starting to get myself mentally prepared for a sprint. At 3 laps to go I'm just about certain a field sprint is inevitable. Last two laps only thing I saw was Yack's back side. I'm always amazed about how well he is able to move up through the middle of the field. It felt like I was the president being moved through a big mob of people by the secret service. In the last back stretch things got real sketchy as some jerk off was zig zaging across the road in front of the field in some sort of attempt to...i  actually have no idea what he was doing, I'd say he was just being a jerk off. Anyways, we come screaming into the last turn Yacks first wheel and me right behind. This young kid i know from the track, Andreas, jumps off my wheel I'd say 400 meters out. I follow and think "...oh man he got a good gap i got to hold on for second". Then all of the sudden I'm coming up along side him a solid 25 meters before the line.

We jumped right into the 3/4 race with Phillip joining us. I didn't last long due to a mechanical issue, maybe 10 laps. It was moving fast. Patrick looked real good mixing things up at the front.  Whitey got into a break situation with Karl Nelson who would later go on to win the race.

Thanks to team and especially Yacks for what could only be described as a Renshaw-esque performance. Real fun day of racing!

Andy
BiG congrats 2daSilva on WIN!!!!!!! @FBF in 4's; &Brendan's 2nd in the 5's!!!!
...FBF is such a great place to hone your craft...h;-)
Damn good results guys. Congrats!
Andy the big tattooed guy from Setanta seemed to suffer from some sort of mental "break".  You are the therapist, so you would know better than me (that goes for you too Grehan).  I got into a move with a rider from the waffle team who I know is strong as he took me down on a kom at Prospect a few weeks back...anywho the big Setanta guy is with us and won't pull through...he is just sort of staring out towards the horizon.  So I stop pulling, to the chagrin of the waffle guy who correctly informs me that we don't have time to be pointing fingers....(sorry waffle guy but I'm not towing stone face anywhere). We're caught.  Patrick and Whitey animated but there was never enough separation or collusion.  Before the sprint starts tattoo Setanta starts raking the front of the peloton in some peyote induced, zig-zag crop dusting the likes of which have not been seen since...well since never.  I sneak up the right side before the last turn as everybody seems to be lined up wide left...Andy is behind...and the guy who got 2nd jumped 1st and got a gap, but it was a loong way to the line and Andy hunted him down.  There was alot of space between Andy and the rest of the field.
The coda for tattoo Satanta guy?....well after the finish I saw him up the road lying down flat on his back staring up into the sky...the peyote had apparently worn off....true story... yacks
Nice work Andy and Yackshaw!
Congrats guys, just tuned in on the events of the wkend. good job at Floyd! sorry Bruce that you got caught in that crash, it happened right behind me and sounded really brutal as I heard a guy yell out as he hit the deck hard. It kinda cut my ambitions for the finish even if I didn't have proper positioning, I could have mustered a top 20 but pointless- Ppl had no respect, the pack felt totally lawless where anything went, I think it's better to roll it in smoothly leaving a nice gap with the people in front and take it to the finish line if you're not well positioned by the last third of the last lap of the race.

Wouldn't be the first time someone took something in the hopes of a result but the reality was a bad trip.  Amphetamines use tends to lessen people's sensations (?) or interest in acting on their thirst which on a hot day would lead to some funky riding.

JP is an expert in "spot the speed-head"
The big tatoo'd guy was on the attack a LOT. Like, way too much. He would get a bit of a gap and then completely die. Repeatedly. Maybe he was just training?
cat 5 race highlights:
  • showed thierry and david The Secret Garden-Bathroom.  it is a temple to the call of nature, unmatched in purity and peerless in convenience.  its stall, ever stocked with fresh toilet paper, accommodates not just a cyclist and his anxious pre-race bowels, but also the cyclist's bicycle.  one need not leave their bicycle outside to heed their needs.  its two water fountains provide cold streams of liquid bliss.  its running water (and soap!) cleanses the accumulated filth of floyd from the racer's hands.  never again will thierry and david have to endure the searing temperatures and olfactory assault of what race organizers call porta-potties but are actually human-sized ez bake ovens that stink of hot urinal cakes and infinite feces.  i discovered The Secret Garden-Bathroom while at floyd for non-race purposes last weekend.  i am willing to show this bathroom to others. . . . for a price.
  • i selected a line through turn one that slipped just between two piles of rubble.  riders who were more than single file would have landed in the piles of rubble.  this evil trajectory caused one person to flat.  mwahahaha.
  • at 3 or 2 to go, i made a request of the siggi's rider behind me: "siggi's, take a pull"  his response: "i'm saving it for later"  his candor was refreshing but his attitude disappointing.  so i basically sat up for a while.  no one pulled around me.  talk about excitement!
  • there was a ride brooklyn guy there with a really beautiful bike with...german?...colors and some blue and black.  maybe i just like that shade of blue.
  • ben, a rider from waffles and dingleberries, flatted but was until that point very much in the contest.  things might have ben very different if he'd stayed in.
  • i think the guy who took the sprint was dodging wind the entire race then moved up in the last lap.  i don't recall seeing him in front of me...ever?  this sort of antisocial energy conservation is my least favorite part of bicycle racing.  some call it strategy.  i call it a blight upon fair competition and wholesome family fun.  i could be wrong though about him not pulling.  maybe he did a couple times and i'm an embittered monkey's uncle
  • i should've shifted down to get the legs spinning for the sprint.  i think my gear was too big going into it.
  • david yang knows all the best food spots.  if he says he's getting food after a race, hold that wheel!
i got a gopro as a graduation gift so i look forward to including video in future race retellings.  no more wondering if my memory is accurate!

Ah yes.  Well they don't call that race a "Time Trial" do they?

:)

These aren't group rides, they are races - there are no "pulls to be shared" while the field is together.  It's hard to swallow especially when you count on races being "hard" so you can get a training effect.  Unless you can ride away you cannot both single handedly make the race hard AND expect anything in the way of results.

@Brendan - I think the Ride Brooklyn guy had a Ritte?  It's got that cool seatstay thing going on.

As far as you being out in front and taking pulls, didn't want to call you out on it, but dag man, you were out there for I'd say 75% of the time.  You sat up a few times because no one was pulling through, but still, everyone behind you was getting their draft on.  Being a FBF/crit newbie, didn't feel like it was my place to say anything at the time, but next time I'm going to slot in front of you and pull for you.  Save your legs for the sprint, homie.

Next post-race destination will be doughnuts in greenpoint.

Peyote guy was very strong...but not so smart.  From now on I shall him, "Mongo".
Guys, there is no need to put yourself on the FRONT to protect a teammate.

"In front of them" does not mean "on the front"

If you want to help someone ask them where there want to go and TAKE THEM THERE.

This is especially important in windy races - if you find yourself near the back and you are about to spark a match too move up the side - try not to do it alone - find a teammate and give them a ride.

If your teammate is sitting on the front railing it into the wind like a Tuesday morning Park ride hero get up close and tell them!!!

Everybody gets stupid from time to time. "What are you doing!?!" Usually snaps people out of it.
More importantly...where is this heavenly bathroom you mention @Brendan??

There's a place for guys who just want to ride hard at the front of the field all day long...

In the 1/2/3 races, where you can work for Ragot, JP, Mueller, Perlberg, etc.

In the meantime, you animal cat 5s and 4s with power to spare...start racing smart, hone the craft, get your results, upgrade, then come ride like a beast at the front all day long if that's what you want to do.

Of course I'm mad-jealous that you guys can ride like that and still place.

-Marc "1/2 hater--1/2 grumpy old man" Bertucco
Just saw my race data.  For 46.94mi, average pace of 27.4mph.  from 3 laps to go to two to go, we averaged 28.3mph.  For the last lap, we averaged 28.5mph.  And we definitely slowed down some on the west side.

In the weird world of Strava, I now possess the second-fasted three-lap time in Central Park.

My race placing was 40th, officially on the same time as the winner, though I'd have thought I was a few seconds back--but I guess I closed the gap after the crash pretty fast--so long as the road is open, might as well speed to the line.

JP, I assume your 3 lap record was pack-aided...what I don't understand is how then say, 20 other guys don't have the same time?

Of course it was pack-aided.  You don't ride 18.4mi in Central Park averaging 28.4mph cranking out only 200w on your own.

This is the beauty, and madness, of Strava.  The others weren't in the same position relative to me over the same three laps.  If they started the segment ahead of me and I passed them by the end, I went faster and thus have the faster time.

I'm also tied for the 5th fastest four laps, 13 seconds down on the leader--and I'm pretty sure everyone in the top 16 was in the race with me.
@mugwump, the beauty of strava is that only you know how wrong it is :)  if anyone asks you, it was all you and no peloton.  i do believe that on one segment of strava you are tied with or close to one Miss Evelyn Stevens

@bertucco, your grump-hating will soon end; the 4s will be significantly more difficult and the only issue i'll have is keeping up. as for the 3s, the only breakaway i'd be able to manage is off the back of the pack, going in the wrong direction.

Registration for this year's Dave Jordan CP Classic is filling up: https://www.bikereg.com/crca-dave-jordan-central-park-classic-2014  It also has a lovely 5:30am start.

It competes with Charlie's "Master's Day" in PP.

I'm out for this one - big sister is in town from Little Rock.
I can't spend $45 for the right to wake up at 3:30. Just not happening.
I'll race prospect. Anyone else for old man day?
hmmm. who's doing the 3s?
As much as I love Central Park when the field is big and fast, read my report above,  I'll be in Florida for a nephew's high school graduation.
I'll be racing the 123. I like going fast.
