Indoor Training, and Virtual Racing (ZWIFT)

I don't know a whole lot a out FulGaz but they're offering a free 3 week trial for their Tour of Europe. This might be fun if you're not already situated with Zwift or TR. They also seem to have some offerings for folks that were laid off due to these strange times.

Results, bro? Also #picsoritdidn'thappen and while I'm at it... #looksharp?

Just because we're living through the zombie apocalypse doesn't mean the rules don't appy!
well, this was a group ride, so don't have as much to report... basically rode up the volcano climb with a group of over 450 riders from all over the world. when it was all set and done, I think I was about 80ish when we cross the line -- but other than a ticker while on the ride, Zwift doesn't provide results. Was fun to cool down, texting and all, with a rider from Nebraska.

Sunday's Castelli race will again be held in Zwift's Watopia.

Sunday 10 am, Volcano Flat

Most of you will get an email, but let me know if you want the link to the sign up form. It will be a private event. I will again race the C category.

I'd love a link. I'm old, fat & out of shape but in cyberspace nobody can hear my excuses.
Looks like Garmin is getting in on the virtual training action - but only if you read fluent Italian ;)

rode the Tour of Watopia stage 4 today, along with 1100+ other riders from all over the world -- and for just a tiny while, all was well in the world. So many Italian flags. And also, omg mega pro Toms Skujiņš was in the group, super chatty for the first few miles too. Pretty sure he lapped me an hour in ;)
Headed down to the cave for some openers on Zwift. Then I'm going to shave my legs in preparation for tomorrow's race.

Recovery Zwift tomorrow? 12est. Bring your own pannini
Im thinking about hosting a training session on Zwift tomorrow. Just need to know what time we should set the meet up at. I imagine most of us have flexible schedules. Let me know if you want to join and a time you could do it at.

the workout will be:
W/u 5mins easy, 3mins at 75%ftp, 2mins at 95% ftp, 2mins @ 105% ftp, 3mins easy

3 to 4x15mins at Ftp 3 mins recovery
10x15seconds at 150% Ftp 15seconds recovery

I'm free tomorrow before 8AM and between noon and 1PM. Great idea!

WOW. That is mind-boggling. They're literally sitting on a pile of winning lottery tickets right now. Their chairs are made of winning lottery tickets

I'm speechless.
Wait they're trying to get into hardware? Now?
Peleton envy.

well if you read the article, it only makes sense, Peloton is clearly killing it, zwift probably has saturated the already cyclist market. I agree, that if I was in their shoes I would have waited the pandemic out and then figure out the move. My guess, which still doesn’t quite explain it, they are under tremendous, crazy hard, investor pressure.

The way they spend money belies the fact they aren’t profitable.
How many subscribers does zwift have?
They have to have at least 20k? Let's pick an arbitrary multiplier like x5, so 100k/mo paying customers?
That was my exact guess. Peak users around 20k so maybe 100k total. But then again it's possible peak is like 70% of total too...
Yeah so let's say anywhere from x1.5 - 5 (I can't imagine any more than x5). Most already with some combo of power meter, hrm, smart trainer that probably costs a lot of dough.

I'm assuming they did their customer analysis, but how many of them will rush out to replace or double up on their existing setup and how many casual non-roadies would be willing to shell out what amounts to about the same cost as a decent lbs road bike?

It is such a roadie nerd centric gaming platform (that I love!) I'm having trouble seeing them pivot to a wider audience.
i see 6.5 billion reasons for their investors to want them to try. I think they’ve saturated their market and are chasing growth
Jules is correct. I don't think the expectation is that people like us, avid racers enthusiasts, will buy indoor bikes, altho we clearly will buy trainers.

The expectation is that the general public will buy indoor bikes. If they are able to come in with a offer that's lower priced than Peloton, and get better at guiding workouts, they'll have a real chance.

Wahoo makes a bike and owns Sufferfest. Stages makes bikes and growing their software division. Peloton, Variis, etc, etc, etc...

Digging a bit more into Zwift alternatives. RGT is free (if you want) and offers real roads (Ventoux!), or you can create routes from GPX files (Propsect Park, ahem?)

Anybody care to try it out with me?
