Indoor Training, and Virtual Racing (ZWIFT)

Sorry friends, of all days Zwift decided it needed extra permissions to run. Good luck, sorry I couldn't make it 4.
@David Yang We missed ya out there! Calling out literally any other club member with Zwift though, if you can make the time, please do, it's super fun and helps us actually score points if we have enough racers. You could dawdle around the course and it'd be fine honestly, just having 4 riders is all that seems to matter.
This seasons banding seems to be much more even in level, which makes it much more fun v last time.

Team, let's do it all, all over again.

Tomorrow (Friday Feb 5th) 7:00 am EST. Zwift Virtual Look Sharp.

Let me know if you wanna join, you'll need to be following me, and I'll invite you.

Already invited the usual suspects, 6 already confirmed, thanks!!

Planning on 40ish KM, you can go longer or shorter. Pace will be chill piano piano suave relax while we discuss cycling jersey design, and totally missing the joke.

Please wear the bumble bee (basic 1) jersey, and an orange cap.

Hope to see you there, virtually.

Love this,
except I have never seen you lot riding in the drops :)
my Zwift bike doesn't even have drops. :P
Eloy! Could you send me an invite??
@Thierry Bonnaire invited
Sorry can't make tomorrow guys.
Hi All-
Going to see about getting into this Zwift thing...
I'm wondering if the Kickr Core is worth the extra cost vs the Snap. Is it easier to use, ride quality better?  And in general are these smart trainers better than the trainers of 5-15 years ago?

Thanks

If you can wrangle it, the direct drive is significantly better.
  • quiet silent
  • direct drive is more secure for hard efforts (no tire slip) and saves the headache of a special tire/wheel
  • smart integration to Zwift, or just program your whole workout
  • significantly better flywheels so the feel is much, much closer to road
  • Racing and riding with people is just way more enjoyable

@Dale Suttle For many years, I did all my indoor riding on Zwift with a Cycleops Fluid 2 and using my Quarq for power.

I switched to a Kickr Core a year ago and I’ll never go back. Going from a dumb trainer to a smart one on Zwift is transformative. Everything about it is vastly more enjoyable.

The Core itself is great. It’s easy to set up and is solid. It doesn’t have a built in power meter, but I regularly test its output against my Quarq and it’s remarkably accurate at all power levels.

It’s absolutely worth it.

get the core. it is worth the extra cost, you will not regret it.
Did a Zwift ramp test today; first time in ages I've used that protocol. I forgot how soul crushing it can be; especially when you're out of shape!

On the plus side, it's all over much faster than the 20 minute Field Test, and having the machine dictate the pace was mentally much easier.
WTRL race tomorrow??
FOLKS IT IS A TEAM TIME TRIAL IN CENTRAL PARK! Seems like it does the future glass sky roads route so not the classic park loop.

Start time: 7:50p - sign up at rider racepass link (goes through WTRL and then passes through to Zwift events page/app).

Key things to remember:
- Easiest and best to coordinate during the race using a call-in meeting like Zoom/Teams/Meet
- Kissena are at a start delay of 3 minutes which means when the clock starts, *do not pedal* (in fact stop pedaling about 10 seconds before). Someone on the call should have a stop watch and count down to 3 minutes. VOIP usually has a 1-3 second delay. To keep it safe, the last time I counted down a second earlier so rest of team would start at the same time and that seemed to work out okay.
- Start plan: Agree to a sustainable 1min wattage while everyone assembles. Last time I think we agreed to around 400w, but very valuable to keep an eye on where everyone is
- Remember to recharge or replace batteries, etc. Nothing worse than connection dropping because of a weak signal!

I'm honestly not sure if I can make it to this one either - work has been rough, but will try my best. Do we have at least 4 riders in on this to gain points?

(Will update below as people sign on)

1. Dave Y - tentative
2. Nathaniel
3. Richard F
4. Rob M
5. James R.
6.

RACE 5 INFORMATION

The Big Apple and the first time a Team Time Trial has ever graced the Mighty Metropolitan course of New York on Zwift. This route will take your team on many of the asphalt and glass roads of New York and passes 'The Met' (The Metropolitan Art Museum - the largest structure on the NY map). Cross the reservoir and then head up one of the toughest challenges of any TTT - the NY KOM with an average grade of 5.9%. Take in the fantastic Manhattan sky-line views from the top (Zwift have done an incredible job with the detail and perspectives up there) before the rollercoaster descent.

In for this one
in as an expendable!
Allez. @David Yang let me know how it is looking work wise and I can set up a teams session if you can't make it (I hope otherwise obviously!).
@James Reeder you are definitely not expendable! Looking like I may be able to join. Can someone post up a meets link just in case I can't?

I can provide a Teams meeting?

I was gifted a used PC that I recently have been using for Zwift so I don’t have to keep moving my work laptop back and forth. It came with a modest video card and I’ve been looking into upgrading it a bit to get better performance during races and group rides.

Anyway, a friend recommends an older card that is in the sweet spot of price and performance. I go to find one only to discover that there’s a massive shortage of video cards due to the pandemic and a surge in cryptocurrency mining. Old cards that should cost about $150 are going for well over double that.

WTH?!

Crypto man. Don't even get me started. Am I old enough to say this feels like 1999?
Alrighty, next race posted, it's the Whole Lotta Lava course. As always we'll need the min 4, max 6 riders...

No time to stop and toast marshmallows over the volcanic lava pools because this week’s course, Whole Lotta Lava is the hilly race we have all been waiting for - the other 4 where just the warmups to this one!  Which power up will you be hoping for to give you that edge while going for the intermediates, or simply just to help you survive the three up the Volcano K/QOM?
