Indoor Training, and Virtual Racing (ZWIFT)

Nifty.  But what I really want to see is a shifter button that changes the resistance of the trainer so it acts like you're shifting the bike.  Theoretically that would get you A LOT more gear range than with a cassette/chainring combo.
You can control the resistance of all/most smart trainers with your phone, also what you describe is how shifting works on most smart bikes — the stages sb20 allows for a virtual setup of hundreds of shifts/resistance
Right, but I wanna do it from a shifter on my bars - not my phone.  Something that could simply bolt on to a regular bike would be dope.

Good to know about the smart bikes.  I've never really looked into them since they are a bit out of my price range.
@GregHoge that kinda reminds me of the cycleops/saris mag shifters

Redbeard is having a major clearance / restructuring sale, here's a Kickr Snap smart trainer for $250, 3 available: https://www.instagram.com/p/CiOEcOCuKk6/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
If you're a big Zwifter (or just like data), Sauce 4 Zwift will be a game changer.  Hopefully it pushes Zwift to include these features sooner rather than later.

I'm still waiting on Zwift to make the Apple TV remote not the worst part of the experience (it's better after the most recent update but still so so laughably bad)
Oh uh:

The language is surprisingly conciliatory.

Wahoo’s position, the internal communication reads, is not to work against Zwift – ”our intent is to continue to work together to better serve our joint customers and grow the category”, despite the legal dispute. “We do not want to stop Zwift or other companies from entering the Trainer category. We simply want them to play by the same rules as the other companies that compete in the category.”

Afraid that could be PR talk. It is not a secret that the Zwift hub is a re-branded "JetBlack" trainer -- why didn't Wahoo care when the JetBlack came out a couple of years back? (likely lesser brand name, small marketing budget, etc)

-- the main reason anyone buys Wahoo trainers and bikes is to get on Zwift (Yes, they are plenty of other reasons and alternatives, but forget about it, zwift is the core reason)

Unless this is dropped soon, if this becomes a real legal battle, we the consumers will be the ones most affected -- when our wahoo things no longer work with zwift.
For sure and the PR speak highlights the self awareness that they need to work well together to build and retain their corner of the fitness industry. We see this with other verticals (streaming/ctv services and platforms duking it out, e.g. YouTube vs Apple vs Roku).
This might also be a business move for one to buy the other, merge, or invest on the other -- I would imagine Zwift is the better funded company, so not sure how likely this is.

An interesting question. They've both got the same customer base and effectively market for one another - I guess the question is how sticky a zwift customer has to be in order to equal a single trainer's profit margin. It's a real old economy vs new question.

The thing is, when people age out of online training they stop paying Zwift, but Wahoo keeps that money forever.

I decided to finally cave and get a smart trainer this year and the Zwift rebranded Jetblack one seems really competitive for $500. Any thoughts on why a Wahoo or other brand would be better?
Is that the jetblack volt? Never tried it, but DC Rainmaker was very positive about it! I bought a elite direto for a little under 500 at REI a couple months ago, but I don’t know if that deal is still available.
Yes, DC Rainmaker seems really positive on it, but opinions from my pals is always appreciated! REI is a good suggestion, they always have some decent sales.
I have the zwift one , I used it twice , it seems good
Check out GP Llama's video on it. If I remember, he was generally positive on the Zwift trainer and weighed in on the question of zwift vs. kickr core
Neat deal on the iPad at Amazon, works a lot better than a laptop with Zwift, in my experience: https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/19/23799515/apple-ipad-google-pixel-watch-eufy-smarttrack-card-location-tracker-deal-sale
Rain day ride, planning on a longish (for indoors) ride on Zwift.

When: 8:15am
Route: Watopia Quatch Quest, 48km
Notes: Set to have everyone stay together. No drop so you can set your own pace up the climbs.

We have to be followers on Zwift for me to invite you, so find me and I’ll follow and add you!

See you in Watopia

Saw @Matt Budofsky go flying by on a group ride today while I was slogging through a Ramp Test.

have to admit it gave me a thrill to see KCC kit, even virtually :)
While it's not Zwift and it's not nearly as exciting as roller racing, Hilltop is hosting Goldsprints for the next four Fridays.  I'd love to do at least one, but Friday is date night.

Same, Friday nights are family night so tough to attend all, but if you all want to coordinate on one of these night, would love to go and hang with friends!
I’d want to attend - no datenights here so that’s easier : )
but like...  what's a "goldsprint"?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldsprint

"Goldsprint is a bicycle rollers racing and social event. Riders on stationary bikes compete against each other in front of spectators."

For those who want to race, know that a fixed-gear bike is faster on rollers.  The direct drive tolerates imperfect pedaling better.

Back in the bad old days of the 1990s, there were a few years where a bar hosted a series of mid-week four-up elimination heat roller races on Kreitler rollers with electronics measuring the speed.  We had a gear limit (USAC roller racing does; it's about a 51x14) and each night was a different distance--200m, 1k, 4k, and maybe a mile.  The racing was actually pretty intense.  One night, former world pro pursuit champ Mike McCarthy got beat at the 4k distance.  To give you a sense of how fast, I believe the best 1k flying start times were under 35 seconds.

Former Kissena member David Perry owns a classic set of competition rollers, the
Barelli Quadrulet Competition Rollers with Dial Face., where each set drives an arrow on an oversized dial.  We, Kissena, rented them to put on some roller racing events over the years.  http://bikecult.com/works/rollers.html

A recent addition to my indoor setup, a Lasko fan. This has leveled up the winter and zwift riding for sure. I have a little remote power plug that lets me turn it on/off.

At $55 is not too bad for a fan, and certainly much less than the $300 for the Wahoo Headwind. I'm enjoying it so much, I'm actually considering a second one so that I can aim them more side to side.

There's a remote controlled one for a bit more money, remote controls speed too.

Remote switch is the pro move ;)
