Some of us were wondering where to ride gravel in Long Island. Great news: Rocky Point has reopened. I'll take the cross bike there tomorrow around 8 am. I'll ride 3-4 hours mixing fire roads and singletracks. Text me on Slack if somebody wants to join.
How does Rocky point compared to say , Stillwell?
Rocky Point is mostly flat and sometimes sandy. Not too many rocks either. It is very suited for cross bikes and endurance rides, I would say a little boring on a mountain bike. The fire roads are extensive (I am still trying to connect them all).
You can prob ride rocky point on a cross bike without getting off the bike. I agree with Remy that it is super fun on the CX bike but it is also can be very very fast on a mountain bike. Similar terrain to Edgewood but without the dumb squeeze-thru features and is far lest twisty.
Farmer's Daughter has been postponed. We have a big group signed up.

Hope this note finds everyone safe, healthy and getting in some gravel miles.
After a recent meeting with the Town of Chatham and Crellin Park/ PS21 (event venues), we have decided it would be prudent to move the Farmer's Daughter Gravel Grinder (FDGG) to later in the summer. The new date is August 15th, 2021.
This decision was made keeping 700 participants, 75+ support staff, sponsor businesses,  event communities, and the character of previous events of the FDGG at the forefront of our minds.  Though grateful we are able to reschedule to August, do know, we share your disappointment.
While we hope to see all of you on August 15th, we know there will be some that have conflicts with the new date.  For these individuals, the following options are offered:
1. Transfer registration to another person (completed by you and said person through BikeReg).
2. Defer to FDGG 2022 (May 15, 2022) - you MUST complete indicate this through the following link by April 20th, 2021  https://www.bikereg.com/edit/9ED83383UY136151T/7743676 Link not working....login into bikereg and go to Participant Contact Information and scroll down to additional info.
We appreciate your understanding, and look forward to providing the safe, high quality event you have come to expect.

There is an event called The Great North, up in Cambridge, NY on 5/15, that I’m signed up to with some guys I ride with upstate. Never done it before.
Finished Hungry Bear 60 miler today aka "Snacky Bear" in just over four hours.

60 miles, about 3600 feet of climbing - the trickiest bit is the last 15 miles or so are almost all sand; sand descents, flats and climbs - so it's almost impossible to get enough speed on the downhill to carry any momentum onto the uphills. Not sure how to pull maximum grade but there are some savage pitches.

I rode piano with a friend for the first 90 minutes and then set off on my own for a more spirited finish. Finished in Cable, WI the home of Tilly's Pies, and yes, I brought one home.

Overall I'm tired but what strikes me is the difference between a long road race - I'm not nearly as spent, and absent those moments of utter total and merciless commitment to making the selection, or the finale... somehow it feels a little less than. I know it's sacrilege but I do miss the rolling poker game of road racing.

Who wants a spot at the Jersey Gravel Grinder on May 23rd?

I have a registration in the Mega Gravel Grinder Tier 3 (82 miles) on Sunday May 23rd, but am not able to go.

Anyone want my registration spot?

Who is going?

I still am not sure whether or not I can go.

Regardless, I'll take the cross bike to Rocky Point tomorrow, mixing singletracks and long roads to get used to pedal on gravel. 11:30am.
I am signed up for the Jersey Gravel.

I'll confess that this event kinda snuck on me, and frankly my motivation and fitness for a 135km bout is not on high. I might opt for the 80some KM route. It also highly depends on who is else is coming.
I'm going. Looking forward to this one, though i'd forgotten it was 135km...
so.many.kilometers.
my weights up, FTP is down and i climb like a cardboard box but going to have a crack at it.
I might (most likely will) opt for the 80 km route.
What kind of bikes/tires are people riding for these gravel races?

Would someone be fine on a cross bike with 35mm tires?

yes you would be a million percent fine.

a smaller consideration is gearing, depending on fitness and the route, you might want to at times consider easier gearing than the typical 40-32 of most cross bikes.
Good point.

my cross setup is 46/36 upfront, 10 speed 11-32 in the back.
Im planning on using my TCX its 46/36 , 11 -32 also. I stuck a brooks cambium and 37s on it, fingers crossed
I think 36-32 will get ya up and over most anything you’d want to ride up and over during a gravel race.
What Rob said, you should be fine. Eventually, consider a 34 for the front.

yep, interested!
file tread 33s, 38-32, and a zipcar.

i don't know how i feel about the 89 degree temps that are forecast for sunday in NJ..
Similarly, have a zipcar in reserve. 38-32, and smooth 35mm -- Will likely reach out to the organizer to see if I can the 80km route.
today's stage of the giro has me excited to do all 135kms. how many of us are going? are we still at 6?

Do it.  Do it all.  All do it all.
I'll be there , doing the full 135km, with the heat and my fitness I expect to be pretty slow, but who knows what the legs will say on the day.
