Group Ride (Sat & Sun)

10705 comments · 111606 views

Hit the Jersey side of the GWB at 6 minutes after 9. Waited for another 10, then went on my merry way. Did super-secret hill climbing intervals in the richy-rich sections of Englewood Cliffs. Nothing funnier than a fat man doing hill repeats.

I post this to give all our new members a heads-up that if you are itching for a ride, especially on a Sunday (the unofficial/official Kissena group ride day) and even if no one has posted to the board, it might be worth heading over the bridge. If no one shows, or you are tardy (as was the case with me today), you still have those great roads to train on solo.

We have to do something about this crazy woman . . .
Isn't there some head to head track event that we could recruit her for?

You know -- and I think Keiran will back me up on this -- I'm pretty sure all track events involve riders traveling the same direction around the track. It might be a safety thing.
Well if there isn't there should be. We could call it the "Dead Rider Roll." If work fast we could get it into the next summer games...
I was simply going to take her out next time I see her on the bike path.
Guys, am I reading this right, I'm confused.

You guys ride two abreast up the West Side Bike Path, usually?
Yes, plenty of room under normal circumstances.
@yang. Saw this and immediately figured this is your kind of post ride recovery food.
@Craig - GIVE IT ALL TO ME.
So, today's ride up in NH. 45 miles, 50% dirt, a mile elevation gain, and a learning experience: when riding up steep gravel/wet dirt hills, maybe use something other than 23c slicks and Look pedals? Just a thought.

My clip-out muscles are tired.

Also, is there a humblebrag thread I should be posting these in?

I would hesitate to go this far, as "normal circumstances" aren't all that frequent up in the bumpy/rooty/windey section. I almost always ride single in that part (and generally try to hog the front so I can see the giant bumps in the asphalt).

For earlier rides and harsher weather, though, it's generally comfortable riding two-up, and I'm conservative.

I think you'll find most folks leave the bragging to the Rapha guys.

Good job on a hard ride but no points for going unprepared :p

Wait, does this mean my 4th place* for jogging up a hilly KOM doesn't count either?

Shit, I'm going about getting that CX upgrade all wrong.

* Out of 4.

Anyone doing a long ride this weekend?
I'm heading eastward into LI (Huntingtonish) tomorrow AM on my way into work, if anyone wants to head that way. Don't be fooled by visions of bucolic wilderness, though, the route to the north shore is terrible.

Alternately, I may put on the knobby tires and do a couple hours' cx adventure at Stillwell (also in Huntington, more or less). Let me know if you want to join in.
Stillwell at 9am. Rt. 25a entrance

What's the route like (i.e. road condition, traffic, stoplights, etc.)?

Where dat?
Type in "Stillwell Woods trails" into Google and you will understand. This involves cars and 'cross bikes. It will be a nice relief from the sketchiness of the peloton and boredom with the tarmac.
We meet here:

I'll in
No cx for me.
Who is up for 8am BB/9am GWB or some version?

Whoa, sweet Stillwell buddies! I was not expecting that.

Unfortunately, I have a houseguest who has taken ill, so may not be able to make 9am (particularly coming from BK). I'll try to update in the morning, though, as it would be nice to run into some trees with you guys.

@Patrick, this is approximately my route to my lab at CSH: http://goo.gl/maps/3JA2X. I don't think there's a pretty way through Brooklyn, and there's a long stretch on the LIE service road that is ok on weekends (but definitely has traffic). Anyone know a better route?

Kayt, Harry and myself to Piermont via River Rd. Architectural tour of Columbia weather center compliments of HB (and the tail feather of a red tail hawk). Never did catch up to woman with helmet on backwards. Good times.

yep! good fun&good company!

KaytM&i hopped a ride on the 'M-train' back down 9W, john tearing up the highway like a roadrunner cartoon!:-O

meanwhile, msK was on johnM's wheel like gretaWies/whiteOnRice up River Road climbs...kid's no joke!

more than i'd expected for a post L&C recovery ride, but given the company &splindiferous weather...just could honorably stop&turn around.

thanks guys!

ps. caught sight of Wei on way out to GWB
pss. Mattie planning on showing @CPK nxt sunday for smack-down.
ps3. pic by kayt...best sadly missing from image.

Harry, I think you are missing your fleece legwarmers. :-)
Hey, I don't see any road in that picture. You should be on 'CROSS bikes.
We had a lovely ride in Stillwell woods and around (and around and around) Sunken Meadow.
25 miles with 2:13 of ride time
It felt like much longer and I'm completely knackered, but was reminded how much I love my 'cross bike.
(See tweeted picture to the left)

Harry, Marc beat me to it but the sleeves are the first thing I noticed!

I think you all had more fun than me today. I did endless laps around the park, one of which was with Jay before I started TT laps. So I guess that was my and his "group ride".

And the wind vest, don't forget about the plastic wind vest on top of the wide open jersey. Still that dude crushes me honey-badger style on the climbs, so I should just shut my pie-hole. We tease because we're all family!
@patrick&marc,
no offense taken...another one of harry's super-secret southern techniques to acclimate for that surprise late season high-heat race day the Green Mts. (suffer in training...relief on race day)

oh, &the arms covers are for UV protection.

ps. johnM, did see backwords helmet cyclist down on River Rd with it right way round... ;-)

As David reported, Eric lead a great cross bike ride Sunday in stillwell. I strongly recommend those of you wanting to work on handling skills to join next time. It's worth the trip.
