Yeah. Completely unnecessary and stupid. A certain rider decided to zoom out everytime someone would go past him like it was a RACE to nowhere. When I went past him (not racing, just cruising), apparently he did this again and swept another rider's wheel which then caused the domino effect, taking down Ian. Just dumb.

The best part was, HE DIDN'T STOP. Not to point fingers, b/c shit happens on rides too, but someone said it was a Raphael Leopard Truffle hunter or whatever they're called.

It shouldn't be needed to be said that if someone goes down, whether or not it's your fault, you should fucking stop. That guy's a bitch.

oh, you probably know this but the other guy who went down had to take a car service back to Brooklyn and has your bike. He has your contact info.

it was great to ride with clubmates today, and many thanks for looking after me very well post crash. i do have a 'severely displaced' break and they think it will require surgery. they gave me the details of their guy, but if anyone knows of a good surgeon here in brooklyn or manhattan let me know.

i'll be arranging an appointment on monday, when the swelling goes down.

i did get to ride in an ambulance, which was a first, and everyone at englewood hospital was super nice and efficient.

finally if anyone knows where my bike ended up let me know, i sure it probably needs some new bar tape after today ;-)

Good news: Your bike seemed like it was in pretty fine condition overall, but I didn't inspect it 100%. The other guy with the Cervelo wasn't so lucky: shredded wheel and a hole in the frame. Lemme know if you want me to pick it up and bring it by. Lucy has my number.

As Ryan said, had a nice ride back with him, Joe, and Alyoshas. Best compliment from Joe being how SMOOTH it was. Which was in short supply with those goofballs earlier.

Josh, and I were trying to catch on NY Velo and rode up just as the emergency vehicles stormed in there. With all the flashing lights and lane straddling, I didn't recognize the dude under the green blanket. Caught up with a rather shaken Stéphane at Nyack. I am shocked to hear some people didn't stop--is it possible they did not know?

No. I was in front of the main two provicateurs and i heard it and turned around. The leopard raphael cyclismic whatever and coffee bean guy new what happened. Maybe not the extent. But they just didn't care. Their super serious amateur training schedule didn't allow for "time off" to check on people they crashed out.

To switch the mood here a little, what is the ride situation on Sunday?

A real shame. Sorry to hear about the need for surgery, hopefully the road to recovery won't be too long.
I think the lesson here is not to not follow a wheel you don't know but that when things get nervous and tense, to find the self control to take things down a notch and ease up on competitive instincts. Before shit hit the fan yesterday there was quite a bit of passing and standing up on the pedals which really was uncalled for consider the already fast-enough pace, and yes I think the riders that did take off were guilty of that. Anyway, looking forward to less eventful days on the bike!

The best part was stopping to watch a hawk that had just captured a squirrel. Pretty cool, not something you see everyday in Brooklyn.

i've always been ambivalent about helmets, when i started riding we only wore helmets for road races, never in training and not for TTs either. The pros never wore them,and i've always thought that helmet and glasses wearing pros lack the 'coolness' (no pun intended) of my heroes from the 80's.

somewhat reluctantly i wear one these days, mainly because my wife insists that i do. however for early morning loops around the park i may not bother, especially if i'm riding my old steel fixed wheel, because ...well they don't go together and i'll look a lot cooler sans helmet.

my head hit the ground pretty hard yesterday : the shell of my 1 year old Uvex helmet is cracked right through to the inside and a section is pushed inwards about 1/8". i did'nt lose consciousness even for a second.

i've revised my opinion about helmets.
