Group Ride (Sat & Sun)

All good at BB
I’ll be at GWB at 9
We had it all , sun ,rain and wind
Nice group today battling it out against the elements.  Greg, Lennart, Mark, Patrick, me.

While it was unseasonably warm--naked knees for me--it was rough out there.  The Tweed descent was worse than usual and Lennart flatted there.  We we waiting for him at the 9W intersection when a guy riding south stopped to tell us that we couldn't go south in Piermont as the downtown was partially flooded.   This got Patrick to call his mom as she likely was in the flooded area.  We had time because Lennart flatted on the descent and had a rough go of fixing it.  He reported the FedEx guy told him he would have called his wife.  While we didn't experience that, we did see that same guy scrape the tail of his truck across the road to get on 9W.  Not like there's a road sign prohiting trucks.

The prevailing wind meant we were going to be fighting a crosswind all teh way on 9W.  And it was stiff.  Turned out the wind was picking up, and while we had a great time flying over the GWB, Riverside Drive was verging on Ghent-Wevelegm 2011 conditions.

And I expect to be at the GWB tomorrow at 9.  I'd rather not take the same exact route as today, but we've got no shortage of area roads to ride.
Yes, it was windy.  Yes, there was ice on several roads.  Yes, I got pelted by a salt spreader.  Yes, it started snowing in Closter, but it only picked up in Englewood Cliffs.  But it was great being out--when its this cold, fewer people seem to drive anywhere when they don't have to be out of the house.

The only real problem was I didn't eat enough on the ride.  So much for bringing the Maurten syrup--I didn't.  I bonked climbing the last big hill.  Alas.

Wow respect for going out in weather like this. Nice ride
Where we meeting?

FWIW, I'm thinking that if the forecast for the weekend is close to accurate, I think I'll be out riding Sunday at the usual time and making my way up to Rockland Lake.

Will update Saturday evening.
I’m slightly concerned about the amount of ice we may encounter
Came across some ice 🤣
Hardman!

I'm trying to decide if the road or cx bike is better.

So, I"m thinking I'll be at the GWB, tomorrow at 9am.   A friend crossed the GWB by bike today and rode up 9W to the market and back on his road bike.  He reported that the GWB is pretty clear, though the salt stuff they threw down makes the Jersey side a bit tricky.

My goal is to do 3.5-4 hours.  But with the temps as they are, goals are flexible.
Today was actually beautiful out
spent a couple of hours exploring the snow trails of prospect park again
I went for it.  No one on the bridge.  No one at the bridge.  No one on the roads.

Jersey is mostly fine.  The worst was the GWB.  It seems they over-pelleted.

I dressed for warmer than it was.  Thought it would warm up faster than it did.  Mistake.  When I got to Piermont, I decided I wasn't warming up enough, visited the Hudson, and pivoted for home.

The crud on the Bridge stuck to my bike, and didn't quite freeze, though it did form a semi-solid sludge around the fork crown, stays and brake bridge.  Serious cleaning ensued when I got home.

Looks like Saturday is teh better day this weekend.

Anyone else coming out to play?  I'd like to take it farther than Piermont, at least Rockland Lake, maybe farther.
I'll be at the GWB at 9am. Have afternoon plans, so will not be able to go beyond Nyack/Rockland Lake
See you there
On a another note. Rain for the forecast tomorrow, so setting a zwift meetup to ride zone 2 as a group.

Sunday January 28th 8am EST.

You must follow me on zwift and let me know here so I can invite you.
I may join you later. Send me an invitation
Good times on the road.

We had Mark, Patrick, myself, a friend of Patrick's (forgot his name already and he has yet to post to Strava) and Marc B.

We rolled the low road keeping it conversational.  Mark was struggling, which was odd.  And then Marc had an explosion about a mile from Piermont--he had broken a drive-side spoke.  We headed for the shop.  There, while Marc was getting his bike fixed, Mark found out his front brake was dragging (damn rotor discs).  That got fixed, too.  James Reeder rolled up.  And then Matt B rolled up.

The new group was James, Marc, Patrick, myself.  Mark was turning back anyways.  Hope he made it home.

The group rode to Nyack, then hit the gravel at Nyack Beach--Matt's first time.  Kind of amazing considering he used to to laps at Rockland Lake.  I think we had the best conditions of the day for the Nyack Beach sector--sunny and warm.  We climbed to Rockland lake, then I headed off to the Orchard, with Matt maybe doing a few laps at Rockland for old times sake, and James and Patrick back to the bridge.

While no fox this week, some good hawk sightings, and a pack of about 10 deer were waiting by the side of the road outside New City.

The roads north of Nyack seem to have been battered by the recent weather.  And the roads felt more crowded than the usual winter Saturday.  But, overall, reasonably peaceful, and only a few haters made their displeasure known.  Did that guy in the oversized pickup truck have to make a close pass when I was already exceeding the speed limit down a big hill in Pearl River? Of course not, but he had to do him.

And remember, the Super Bowl ride is coming up. In Two Weeks.

Add me, I'll join for a bit.
Hit some trails 👍

For anyone interested, I'm going to heed JP's advice in the Super Bowl Century thread and ride to Nyack Saturday. For me it will be ~65 miles round trip; I'll stop in Nyack at Boxer Donut and Espresso for a treat/warm up before heading back. Planning to take the low road on the way out, and 9W full way back.

I'll probably wait to venture out until around 9am from Brooklyn, my last foray in the mid to high 20s left me with super numb fingers after about 90 mins. With some new gloves (per Greg recommendations), even more layering, and a slightly later start, I'm optimistic I can avoid the same fate.
I’ll be at gwb around 9.50 too - not sure if I’m going for 65 miles yet as I’ve been ill but I’ll see
I expect ot be at the GWB 9am both days.
I've gotta be home by noon tomorrow, so planning to be at GWB at 8am tomorrow.  Planning steady out for 2 reps of Bradley-Tweed + quick coffee stop.

Let me know if you're planning on joining.
Calling an audible in the morning, today's workout + ice skating was not kind to my legs. Will msg you if I join.
Today: Boxer Donuts and back. Everyone got cold feet on the way there and riding up to GWB was hard with the cold headwind, but the way back was a lot easier. Greg, Bret, Blake and me
I'm out my legs are shot.
