Mostly chill for the Zone 2 riders. We (mostly) managed to keep it conversational over Clausland mountain. Two sprints--one for the NY state line on the low road and a sprint for the gas station in Englewood Cliffs.
I should add that I'd love to get one of us to take the state line sprint KOM on the low road. We've got several riders in the top ten, but it's been years since the KOM has been challenged.
The only way to take it is with a coordinated effort.
Chilly but good ride to Piermont today. It was overcast and there was a breeze that pushed the low 30 degree weather a few notches lower than that. I started from BB and met up with JP, Dave and Greg at GWB. Took the low road and climbed over Clausland and down Tweed to some good double espressos at Piermontbike.
While no one else complained about their fingers being numb, several of my digits lost feeling which made shifting or grabbing things in my pocket tricky (hence no photos). Started researching heated gloves when I got home. Otherwise, I wore my mountain bike boots (swapped the pedals on my road bike for mtn pedals) and my apex jacket and thermals did their job famously
@PatrickGrehan I really like my Castelli Estremo gloves. Paired with a liner glove, they keep my fingers nice and warm and still let me take my glove on/off to eat/do phone stuff.
Been a while since I've put that many hours and miles in the saddle, something like 6hrs/80mi in total. Also been a while since I spent extended hours in the cold and my little toe covers, thin shell gloves and lack of neck gaiter/chin covers made for some frozen extremities. The OG champsys winter jacket with the weird trapezoidal omnipocket was as annoying as I remembered and I was glad I threw on the wind vest under it at the last minute - helped keep the core warm. Interesting how temps fluctuated depending on where we were along the route.
Nobody was going for the state line but I wound it up anyway. JP started following a second too late and didn't quite catch my wheel so I ended up taking it. On Bradley Tweed, Greg and JP hit it hard while Pat and I kept it mellow. The pit stop at Piermont helped thaw us out and we beelined it back on 9W. We kept it civil and traded pulls 2x2 (with some extra friends of JP we picked up on the way). At some point Greg's tempo ended up being my threshold so I slid back. Greg took the last hill sprint despite my best efforts at jumping early. I blame the compact chainset I'm still getting used to and not his ability to generate 900000watts.
The city recently replaced the bike lanes for dedicated bus lanes along Northern Blvd which was kind of okay - less double parking and the buses were spread out far enough for me to ride on it at a fairly easy pace without worrying too much. By Main Street Flushing I ran into a dubious parade (run by a mayor Adams donor and shady local business guy who sold fake Covid virus ionic "badges" in 2020 - not kidding). Took a while to ride around it.
Got home, ate a giant meal and passed out. Good times.
Bummed to of missed the ride , I thought I had fixed my rear tire from last week, but after topping up with air the hole started to leak sealant again ,by the time I got it fixed the it was to late , did a Rockaway route and then got out Sunday at Bethpage in the rain
If it's not still raining, I'm planning to be at GWB tomorrow at 9am. I've got an endurance ride with some tempo/threshold I gotta do. Will stop for coffee.
