Fun ride today. Kevin, Matt, Dave and I headed to Clausland/Piermont for a chill-y ride. Very few riders out there. Given that Matt’s partner Sam is expecting soon he was quick to attack every hill and sprint given he might be changing diapers for a while. This was a bit more of a tempo ride as we were all trying to stay warm.
It’s not a ride with David without something decadent to eat. Today was chocolate cake from Burberry!
Pat commented this felt like a preview of the Super Bowl century coming up and I very much agree. There was practically no one else on the roads, I was woefully out of shape and falling apart trying ride everyone else's tempo, my extremities and face were freezing, we saw pockets of snow flurries, and I had to pee half the time. All this is to say I had a great time! It also happened to be Bunberry's 7th year anniversary today so Kevin followed suit and we had cake and a bunberry bun to celebrate (double pastries 4 lyfe). In the shop we ran into Ethan from Lonely Hearts (they dropped the automatic) who was the only other cyclist we saw up to that point in the ride. He was in his Rutgers college kit and we talked about the races he helps put on including ones at Rutgers and the garden state stage race which sounds like a fun time. By the time we headed back out it warmed up a tiny bit and we saw a few more groups including Veselka squad rolling out of Market for higher elevation. Everyone saluted each other as we recognized each others dedication to this insane compulsion to ride bikes outdoors. We even saw a time traveler heading down p-star hill as we were climbing out, complete without a helmet and OG Oakley sunglasses.
Matty won all the sprints, Kevin legitimately contested them and I hung on to Patrick's wheel for dear life. It was a good ride.
Major apologies and mad props to Greg who probably just missed us as we left GWB and rode up to kiko solo. What a machine.
I don't think we can expect a better January day than today. It was below freezing when I rolled out, but it warmed up to 40, which is pretty much the average high for this time of year.
My legs still can't find a consistent effort level.
Mark and I met up and headed through the low roads and then up Bradley and back via 9W. We saw JP heading out with the VO2max hammer ride (wow! Isn’t he recovering from serious injury?!) but we opted for a endurance/tempo ride. We don’t stop for coffee as wanted to get Mark back to Brooklyn before it started raining. I think we succeeded (I drove from the GWB).
Roads were great and the weather warm although there was a strong headwind on the way back. Saw a number of riders getting in a ride before the storm
This recovery business is hard work. I rode well enough until the group hit Old Mountain in North Nyack, and followed it with 9W over to Rockland Lake. My legs had been ok enough till that point but the gradient and length is not what my legs are used to. Got dropped there. It was great to be out. And, when I got to Tenafly, I felt I had beaten the rain, so I pummeled my legs on a few extra hills, in the rain, before heading home.
We've got the Super Bowl ride coming up. Need some fitness for that.
Just me at the bridge today...well, two guys from King Kog suggested I join them, but I felt I was short on time and they were rolling out 9W, so I tried smaller roads.
Legs were pretty tired, first 190-mile week since October, but I figure the next several days are looking like they favor riding inside.
Assuming the weather forecast holds, I'm expecting to be at teh GWB at 9am and going for about four hours. I think I want to head out to Suffern or Mahwah.
While it was looking like snow when I rolled out the door, it turned out to be pretty decent, if slow. Seemed to get a good bit colder in Jersey, but eventually it warmed up back to almost the temp when I started.
