Nice turnout. Blake, Dave, Kevin, Max, Lennart, Patrick, myself, & and Marc B.
Pea soup fog. Not only were the towers of the GWB obscured, but we had maybe 100' visibility on 9W, which feels a bit freaky thanks to the 45mph speed limit, and something I'd try to avoid if riding solo.
We did 1m pulls on the way north, hoping to have enough visibility for the 9W stateline sprint. We didn't.
We dropped to the low road to do that stateline sprint. I think that went a bit better.
Blake and I turned back at Palisades, NY, riding the low road to Cresskill, where we started to stair-step out way back to Englewood Cliffs.
Good times - after JP left we extended a bit further up to Nyack, had coffee at the Nyack Bike Shop Collado.live (I think that's their official name). Riding along River Rd from Piermont to Nyack you couldn't see the river, it was just a blank white canvas with bits of dock posts and their reflections off in the distance. Pat and Marc B. decided to get some more miles so the cat4/5 crew went in to have some coffee and pastries and talk tactics for Verge coming up.
Weather felt both cold and warm - the microclimate temp shift from pocket to pocket was extreme - one minute it was way too warm and the next I was glad I had winter arm warmers under my fleeced long sleeve jersey.
We kept a steady rotation up to Market and after the state line climb we practiced getting a real world feel of breaking and bridging, focusing on the "snap" needed to create the initial separation and then putting in the work to bridge up to the rider ahead. Everyone nailed it! It was a reality check on how difficult it is to bridge and to feel the agony of closing the last 5-10m to the wheel ahead. Hoping to utilize the learning into some moves this coming weekend.
I misjudged the red light before gas station sprint and went for the sprint thinking it would turn green by the time we reached it. Nope, was about 2 seconds too early and it wasn't my favorite that I did that - sorry fellas. Final sprint on Hudson Terrace, I pushed the tempo downhill and watched as Kevin and Max duked it out for the hilltop.
Ran into former KCC Mike C. hanging at the bridge and it was nice catching up for a min. We headed down Riverside together and split at 79th where Max headed to Wburg and Lennart and I headed toward the west side for the QBB. The half marathon really did a number on midtown, but we somehow wormed our way through Central Park South and cut across to 5th Ave and to the bridge on 57th.
Side note: I coated my new bike frame with this pseudo-ceramic coating and a light rinse washed the muck from the ride right off. Same with the waxed chain - zero grease and mess, still nice and quiet. The cassette is proper clean too.
i think i'm out. i felt a sharp pain in my upper hamstring sprinting during a zwift race today (i think i tore my butt) so probably just gonna do some easy park laps if i feel better
Saw some friends of KCC do this route the last few months and looking to give it a go to mix things up one of these weekends. I hear there are some gravely/dirt bits we can deviate to so that might be fun as well:
quick question: does anyone ever park their car in Fort Lee and ride 9W from there? Was thinking of meeting some friends up there after a ride either this weekend or next weekend and was wondering if anyone had any tips on where to park? Does Strictly Bicycles have a lot that can be used?
