@Brendan: If watching that race actually made you *want* to do it, you should definitely do it.

Brendan, you should know that for you, and other NOT single folks, the formula is actually: N-1. Where n=the number of bikes that would cause your significant other to leave you.

Please note: N is not a fixed number for any given person. Flowers, thoughtful presents, in-law visits and couples therapy have potential to increase N. Overtraining, self-medication, and general selfishness and lack of empathy generally decrease N substantially. Take it from someone who has explored both directions. A bike room in the basement also doesn't hurt.

Red Hook Crit pre-race enthusiasm not matching up with the quantity/quality of post-race reports. We had guys/gals racing out there on foot and bike, no?

I was a spectator for the men's and women's crits. Props to anyone crazy/determined enough to do it in those conditions. Saw a guy shivering so uncontrollably he almost fell right off his bike, sort of scary. In all the hubbub and time shuffling, I almost missed my start of the womens 5k. Warm up consisted of the two minute jog to the start line where I heard the announcement that we had one minute until the whistle. Managed to PR with a 7:01 pace. (While biking in the rain is lousy, running in the rain can be fun!)

A fellow Dijonnais won the race, that's special indeed!!

Despite the nasty weather I thought it was a pretty good time as a spectator, hanging out with friends and checking out the chaotic scene (mostly inside the cruise terminal where it looked like a custom track bike convention).  I can imagine how packed it would be on a nicer evening.  The race itself was really weird, at one point they stopped the women's race, brought the poor shivering souls into the terminal, and then had them go back out for a few laps to finish.

It's a dumb race. Sorry.

I showed this to a coworker. She showed me that guy's Facebook in which he claims he was the victim of a "textbook case" of having the door closed on him. He's got POV footage up as well.

Race report. Came in undertrained, overweight and with low expectations. And didn't even make that. Didn't have time to warm up. Soaked and frozen after a lap. Missed qualifying cutoff time. Whatever. This picture of me sums it up pretty well.

It's a shame that this presentation of cycling to the masses has very little to do with athleticism and everything to do with danger and peril. The lowest common denominator draw is that everybody loves a shit show. Bad journalism 101.

The RHC is an abomination to the true sport of cycling and Trimble is a tool for comparing the safety to a central park race.

What blows me away is this is BY FAR the bicycle race with the most main stream media coverage in the United States. But somehow I am still surrounded by people that choose to ignore this, or worst, are pissed off about it -- What shame, what lack of understanding of sport -- this lack of vision is the opposite of the Red Hook Crit and it is one of the many reasons cycling as whole is a masters sport in decline.

The athleticism is not in question --- they reference pros and expertise a few times during the piece.
