Red Hook Crit

The reason that only 5 people finished is because Trimble does not allow you to get lapped. If you're not on the same lap, your race is over. On such a short course and with so many crashes, it's likely that few will finish. Bezdek and Kyle Murphy were hauling ass too.

On the cruise ship terminal course, I think only about 30 people finish those races.

With that said, having only 5 people on the course with a few laps left did seem eerie.
Well sometimes you need appropriate rubber. Its hard to pinch them. But the tar strip was the deal breaker I think
some guy crashes in front of the 2nd pace motorcycle at 11:20

that chicane was so fucked up
You know - this race is a shitshow for so many reasons... But I'll be damned if the level of video & photo coverage isn't better than anything we get to watch on steephill...
that strip of paint seems to have claimed everyone

I came upon John after his crash. I kept going. I flatted. Stupid expensive race. Of only 5% of starters are able top finish the race, something is wrong. I've done it now. I'm never going back. Heck, it wasnt even fun to spectate. Brest part of the race was the parade lap where I pulled up to Stearns and grabbed his beer. Huge cheers. Hand slapping from everyone on the rest of that straight. That was cool.
nobody caught the RHC beer hand-up on the parade lap on film (Red Hook Cross?), but we did get the post-flat tall boy chug-a-lug for posterity.image
Even the Moto seemed to have trouble in the cobbled chicane.

Epic hand up.
Aaron, Ragot and John, good job! Sounds crazy.

Aaron - I'm convinced it was my 49 ring that made the difference to you this round ;-) Thanks for showing it a good time - that's probably the longest it's ever been ridden in one ride, haha ;-)

(but seriously, I'm sure having a bigger gear made a difference.)
This race had to be the most fun I have ever had! It was a complete shit show but I kept attacking and overtook a few people after every lap before the moto caught up to me. Kept drafting, held the line, then overtook people in the straight lanes. In fact, I got it all on my contour helmet cam. I should post it up soon. As far as close calls, I avoided the bikes during the major crash and someone's chain popped off in the first lap next to me. I stayed in for about 8 laps and around 15 mins. I was trying to work with John and Eric, but they started up in the front. The course wasn't great for spectating like the original course, and those special VIP box seats were a huge rip off if you actually paid for it. All there is to do now is just keep training for next year and hit it harder! Thanks to all those who came out to spectate and support!

Harry -- did you get any pics?

I can confirm tubies can flat. Mine did. No external cuts to the tread or tire. Air leaks quite quickly. I've managed to get the tire to stay inflated at 120psi with the help of Stan's no leaks or stop leaks, or something like that from Stans'.

So, I don't have to glue another tire this year.

+1 for small victories?

Yeah Stan's is great stuff.  Except for that one time when I was racing at Rockleigh and the puncture decided to get bigger and shot Stan's all over my bike and the person behind me.

You mean at T-Town, for example...? ;-)
@harry - You're probably not usually recognized for your forum post organization, but I have to compliment your multi-photo post layout there. Well done, sir. Raising the bar.
Chatting with a few major taylor guys at white plains earlier. The kid that went down hard in the qualifiers is ok, kind of. He had to have surgery on his face and following the crash suffered a collapsed lung. Kid is only 15 as well. But he's doing well apparently. Not good PR for the event. 15 yr old seriously injured, 5 racers finish and a multitude of crashes. I cannot imagine it'll be at the navy yards again. On the positive side I am happy to here we all survived relatively unscathed. And Al B took 4th by the way.
crashes are bad PR in general, but this feels worse.  does it make any sense that they let a 15-year old race a 10-corner crit on a track bike?  no doubt he's probably fast and fit, but this just seems like a disaster waiting to happen....

meh...the fearlessness that goes along with being 15 might actually be an asset in this type of race; less second-guessing, panicking going into turns, etc.  Then again, less sense of self-preservation so possibly more recklessness...

I assume anyone under 18 had to have parent sign off...?
I wasn't asked my age or for ID
I sense liability

i dunno, man....the kid is still apparently lying in an ICU after leaving half his face on the BNY tarmac and collapsing a lung.....
if an employee at my school building is to be believed (he used to race a bunch like 20 years ago and seems to know a lot of folks), the junior who crashed is none other than the kind young lad who stopped to assist me last week en route to FBF.  he was nice, graciously refused my money for his tube, and stuck around to see that i made off.  he also was the first person to pedal over and congratulate me for the win.  his name is josh.  i hope to see him again.  wes and mark also met him, if the guy at my school is correct that it's josh.  still got his tube in my rear wheel.
@brendan - he's right, it was josh. https://www.facebook.com/JoshuaProHartmanGetWellSoon
fuck.  he is 14.

here's wishing him well.

crash comp all from that same spot......w Harry's  handsome mug  featured prominently

Harry read above.  There is a facebook page dedicated to that.
