The final two stages will be exciting to watch, but today's stage will be my favorite of the Giro. It was a grand tour stage at its most intriguing and dramatic. Tejay Van Garderen banished his demons with a stage win out of a stellar and combative breakaway group, which included Mikel Landa riding a lively defense the blue jersey (and leaving the inside line open on two-man sprint to the line...again). Orica-Scott mixed things up on the front of the pink jersey group until late in the race to take the white jersey from the quietly incredible Bob Jungles and give it to their man Yates. Excellent teamwork as usual from the indomitable Movistar domestiques. An early attack from Quintana. Fast descents. Daydream-inducing Alpine landscapes. Dumoulin again showing he can grind down a gap, and again flexing his new climbing legs with some brisk counterattacks. And he'd been riding without teammates for at least 50 kilometers. Will Quintana and Nibali focusing solely on Dumoulin as Pinot and Pozzovivo broke away in the final kilometers end up looking smart, or arrogant? And Zakarin somehow had the energy to close down forty-two seconds overall. Now, less than two minutes separate places 1-5 on the GC classification. Good shit.

Races can turn on a variety of innocuous things...potholes, musette bags, dogs on the course, mechanical etc.  But this Giro....this Giro turned on a dookie.  If Dumoulin hadn't had to drop  
 that duke 5 days ago...this Giro would have been a bore.  So tomorrow, after your morning glory, turn and salute that commode.   All Hail....

I think the last week was really exciting. It was not a given that Dumoulin would have won - even without the dookie incident. Watching the stages live we could see Movistar and Katusha setup some beautiful team tactics to strip Dumoulin of teammates and put the hurt on. What was impressive - but not a forgone conclusion - was that Big Tom was able to neutralize or at least minimize Quintana and Nibble's attacks. 

If anyone in the top 5 had a "Tejay" style bad day, It would have changed things big time. In the new (pretty sure these guys are clean) era, the likelihood of a "jour sans" seems much more likely.

With the victor in doubt until the last moment.

The Giro wins by Hesjedal and Menchov (while tainted by doping, or possible doping) were also up in the air until the end of the last stage tt.  And so was the 1989 Tour.  

Look at the Tours where the race leader rides defensively for the final mountain stages.  This year, Quintana was attacking because he knew his Giro depended on it and also because he had reason to fear not only Dumoulin but also Nibali and Pinot.

I feel like that is one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen.   People can’t just cheer, observe and applaud anymore.  Everything has to be processessed through the prism of a smart phone screen. All of our experiences need to be crowd sourced through social media.  We pimp our virtual selves and look for self validating payment in the form of “likes”.  My “actual” self would know if being feet away from the Giro riders was a good experience.   I wouldn’t need any electronic validation.  So please...don’t click on any of that digital “pez” you see under this message...Yacks is dopamine free and working on a “DOPaminers Suck” t-shirt design.
