NEWS FLASH - THIS FRIDAY - 8/24 - RACING IS ON (not the TT on the website - krebcycle.com)
the race on 8/31 is iffy as the college may pull the permit.
SO, GET your arrangements made to come and race the hardest and funnest race around. Remember, it is the RIVERHEAD campus of Suffolk County Community College - not any of the others!

5th tonight from the break!
Eric took 5th last week, so I thought I'd give it a go.
Met up with Ragot and we drove out. He showed me where he rolled his VW Rabbit.
This is a fun course and a dandy of a race. It's a nice little loop with enough rise to keep it interesting. There was also a very fun vibe in this fun suburban environment with a fair amount enthusiastic spectators. I asked Eric if this counted as an 'out of town race'. He said it did. At that moment, I knew that it was going to be on and popping.
Slow start. Attacks weren't going anywhere. Eric and I took turns getting off the front. It seemed like everyone was watching what we were doing, especially Eric. But persistence paid off when I followed Jan's wheel as he bridged up to a couple of guys off the front.
We hit it on lap 5 and were gone for the next 15. The field was chasing and getting uncomfortably close early on. Somebody bridged, but that was it. I took pretty big pulls to make sure that we would stay away.
I was feeling good, but I knew that at least 2 of the 4 guys in the break were better sprinters. We hit the bell lap and I decided to attack early. They were cat and mousing, not pulling through, and I got a nice gap on them but I couldn't hold it. I sat up. They slowed and I tried again but no dice. By the time we got to the last 750m or so, I missed the jump and couldn't sprint with them. I rolled in for 5th. Next time, I'll attack like I mean it.
Fun, fun, fun. Hope this goes down next Friday. I want to do it again.

Thought I'd post a couple quick thoughts about this race.
First off, if you get a chance to go out there and race, take it. Mellow setup, fun little course, collegial atmosphere, and the smell of fresh manure wafting across the backside of the course from the farm next door. Ahhhh.
It was a rare Friday afternoon with no work for me so I made a last minute decision to go even though I had just gotten back the night before from a two week vacation with minor bike time and major beer and feet up in a lounge chair time. I hadn't raced in a month. Yet, somehow on the way out I agreed to do the A race.
17 laps of about a 1.7 mile loop. A field of about 30. Pretty much sat in for the first half of the race to see if my legs were up to racing. Not really. Bridged to a break on lap 9 which fell apart pretty quickly and I f'ed up the re-entry into the group. Pop, off the back. Tried to chase back on but was pretty toasted. Stopped at the S/F to watch the race finish up. Eric came in about 10th.
In the end I was glad I did the A race. The B race was 12 guys on a group ride. The C race was 7 guys on a recovery ride.
Ended the night with some BBQ on Union St.

"Promoters Rant
We race in the rain but not lightning. If there are less than 10 people per field we will combine or cancel the race. Ex. if it's pouring and 2 riders show up I'm not going to stand out there holding up lap cards for those knuckleheads. Prize money is a percentage of the registration. The more riders in your race the more prize money there is. Top 5 places in the A race top 3 in the B race. We do have primes for both groups. Please don't come here looking to take home next months mortgage payment. We have no electronic timing, no camera. The idea is to provide you a place to race without a big entry fee. It's like a little laboratory where you can practice some tactics that you might not want to experiment with at a weekend race. Try your sprint a little earlier...... a little later, take a flyer with 1.5 to go, use 3 riders for a leadout. Ride a team time trial!! Not saying that we don't try to put on a good event for you, the resources are limited though. If your looking for big prize money and all that electronic timing stuff, or if you need a result sheet to tell if you were 14th or 15th maybe you should find a different place to race."

2nd plus I took the preme. I was away from lap one. In many breaks until the last three man was established with little over half the race left. NP was 335 for 1:30.
