Riverhead - Friday Nights

OK, Friday night was free and Saturday morning did not have racing, so "honey, can I go?"

Work ends and I'm gone. I like racing out in Riverhead because there is no pressure except if you want to put it on yourself.

Small field ~20 or so. Four Green Arm Bandits (Karl Nelson included), three East End guys and then the assorted lot. Race starts, right off the bat, a Green Arm jumps and gets a gap as we ride piano. I am not about to get worked over by these two teams, so after a couple of minutes of the guy being out there, I bridge into the uphill headwind and pour it on. He can barely hang, but I ease up enough and get him to pull through once in a while. We're five laps in and I'm asking where the preme is, and the promoter is like "next lap" so, just before the preme, three guys bridge up - Karl Nelson and an East End kid - Chris Zaverdes (his dad is a very strong sprinter, so he's got a genetic thing). I launch from behind up the hill and easily take the preme. I keep rolling and eventually the four make it up to me. Two more join and we have 7 in the group. I figure we're set, but somehow, the pack is still nosing around here and there.

A few laps later as we head up the hill, I punch it trying to get rid of some of the weaker guys as I found myself outnumbered by two Green Arms and two East Ends. All I did was ride away solo. But as I hung out there, a Green Arm and and East End (Chris Z) come across. We go, we stay away. On the bell lap, two guys who have been bridging forever finally make it across. I figured they were not going to matter in the sprint that was 30s away.

I was second wheel up the hill, but really all that mattered was that Chris Z had my wheel. I waited much longer than usual to launch my sprint - I was actually all the way up the hill, but Chris was glued to my wheel and given that he was very good at taking short pulls all day, he was able to come around at about 50m to go. 3rd was waaay back. 20s at 906w.

It was a hard day for the legs, but surprisingly, I only felt a mild cramp or two coming on in the race. It was more my back.

Great way to start the weekend.

Fun fun fun races. It might be 90 minutes coming back with no traffic, but takes a bit longer to get there, but its low key, really fun racing that will make you better.

Nice job Ragot.

I have the 21st on my calendar as a definite. 28th as a maybe. I'll probably need a ride out to both.
If I go on the 21st, I will leave from great neck so if you can train it further east to say floral park, I can grab you.

Alternatively, I may hit ttown. So if someone wanted to go see that spectacle, I could bring them.
@eragot, I'll take a ride out to ttown to spectate. Hit me up.
@vlad - Kieran wants in, so we probably could make a go of it provided its not a sprint heavy night (not my forte or worth it to me)
Attention all Kissena Members.  Especially Category 4 racers.

Racing on Long Island, begain a few weeks ago.   Importantly, it's here.

Something super important, that not a lot of people realize.  Due to it's training nature, it's one of the very very few events, that are classified at category 4,3,2,1 events.  This means, people like Eric Ragot, Mike Perlberg, and myself, can actually race with a category 4 racer, and aid and abet them into winning positions, earning them USAC upgrade points to category 3.

What what what?  Now, I know what you are thinking "Long island....thar be barbarians there"   (see attachment)
Not true my friend!  Take a train, plane or automobile.  Get there.  Have fun, race hard.

Seriously.  This is likely the best advancement opportunity for our 4 riders, because the fields are smallish, easily manageable, and three people can effectively dominate the racing.  Harken back to years back, when Jake sisson, eric ragot and I won every single prime all summer long, and took two of 5 paid spots on the podium every single night.

Now, I know what you are thinking... But it's not a park!!  In NYC!   What will happen to us if we venture that far east?  Will we ride off the edge of Long Island into the Abyss?  (No, that's montauk).  Literally a 90 minute drive, with super easy upgrade points available.  Don't be daft.  Show up.

Tonight I can ferry people BACK to brooklyn in my rental.

Course is a rolling 1.89 miles.  Closed to traffic, fair pavement.  Carbon wheelable.  Good fields, typically safe-ish racing.  good train access.  Two hours of fastish easily controlable racing with upgrade points.  Do NOT be a member of the lifetime cat 4 club.

Thats' all for now.  Unsure how much longer 1,2,3,4 races will exist, but for now, take advantage.

M

Eric got pipped. We ended up 2nd and 3rd plus I won the prime. Gas and entry fee paid for!
Nice job guys.
Loves me that course....loves it.  Nice job orange armada !
long version:

I follow an attack at the gun and 2 others come with. I scream and cajole and one guy gets dropped 1/2 lap in. Soon the 3rd is struggling. 1.5 laps in (out of 20) and we're about to get caught. I counter attack my own move and roll off solo. I see a group of four bridging with Eric's orange helmet. I wait up and hop on.

The first 5 laps are pretty hard and then we settle in.

I take a prime.

We settle back in. It gets easy.

I attack with one to go and the sprinter kid sticks to me like glue. My calves are cramping - damn it. I try to attack and shake him 3-4 more times without luck by hoping to soften him up for Ragot.

I force the sprinter kid into the lead and jump him. My fucking chain is skipping and I'm still in the lead. Ragot and sprinter kid roll by and he just pips Eric. I get 3rd.

After the race a dave jordan guy says to me "holly shit - your guy in the field (Myles) did so much work. He covered every move and kept it all together." Thanks Myles!

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make another one of these until August, if that, but they are worth doing. The course is super safe fun cool nice sweet etc.

PS - not s short race either - 1:20 minutes of racing / almost 34 miles.
Myles is a great teammate, he always rides like that. I wish his life would allow him to come to more races with us.

Normalized Power of 335w for 1:20. Not a joke of a race. There is a reason why it hurts and I don't have the sharpest sword at the end.

These races are no joke if you try.

^crazy legs: did you walk home like this guy?

@ Jules

That is a pretty normal power output for a rider Eric's size in an "a field" breakaway. I averaged 300 watts for 80 minutes with 312 as my "x power" which is slightly lower than normalized. I'm weighing in @ 165 these days, to give you an idea.

@Mike is X-power FTP or normalized power?  Those are still big numbers although it's true that normalizing for weight does make it sane... still... CRAZY LEGS THE BOTH OF YOUS!

294 average, 313 xPower. I didn't work as much towards the end of the race, that's for sure.

Anywats... Friday, Jule 5. I'll be coming off a few days rest and (burp) will come out to Riverhead to play.

I will drive back to Brooklyn after, so if you want to take the train to Riverhead, that's cool. I can also pick you up in Bay Shore or Babylon. Again, after you train it.

Fun time to race out there.

Get in on the game. If you've got the day off and have a car, get on out there.

Let me know if you need me or will go.

X-power is like normalized but a little lower. Apparently normalized is a patented calculation so golden cheetah can't use it and had to make their own calculation. I think it is a good 10-20 watts below normalized power, but it really depends on how "spikey" the race is.

That is Kookoo... I'm not even sure you *can* patent a calculation...
@eragot ... what time do you think i'd have to leave from brooklyn to make it friday (i'd probably drive)?
no later than 3pm.
I'm in for this one way or another. Mark: Let me know if you want company for the drive. Otherwise, I'll LIRR it.
adam -- done.  i am almost certain friday will be a non-event in terms of work, so i cannot imagine my slipping away early will be an issue.  i'll confirm a little closer to the time, though.

i'll also have a spare spot for the ride out and back, if anyone wants it.

Sweet! Thanks, Mark. I took off this past Friday, in part with the hope of getting out there, but later realized there was no racing that day. Excited that our office is closed so I can actually make it to one of these.
today's a lock.  adam and i are leaving my place at 2:30.

i have a spare spot... come race.
See ou there. Anybody wan to take he train as I will drive back to Brooklyn.
Those are my favorite races....great course
Light traffic today. Easy drive.
3rd from a late break.
