@mugwump - Curious to hear what you think.  I'll probably download it onto my Kindle in the neantime anyway.

@Jules-Whoever (or is whomever[?]) created that graphic carries the gene for typos. see "repsonders" [sic]

@Nelix he has also committed a crime against all humanity with those graphics...
@Jules Because of the colors? Or the fact that only 14% of us can be high responders (and I'm not among them)?
@Nelix the graphics/design. It makes me want to eat glass
@Jules Agreed.  I'd eat glass too, but I'm in the high responder group to pain.
I thought those graphics were directions on how to make the blue meth...
I just set a PR (I think) for my 1 minute power doing openers going up the Col du Prospect... very unexpected.
What has 2 thumbs and is a fan of mid-season mandatory rests?  That's right, me.
According to a study, professional cyclists in France live an average of 6.5 years longer than their non-pro-cyclist counterparts.

Gee, I wonder if they have something different about their genetics . . .
@dstokes - Well, it is the Daily News after all but the blurb under the photo of the guy riding says;:

Elite cyclists keep practicing their sport after they retire, which keeps them in shape for the long haul, researcher said.

Or maybe it's the HGH. : )

Pretty close to 8.75 watts/kg
Yeehaw!
Yeehaw!
I'm not complaining.  Doing a bit of review for the season and since my post-injury comeback I've only had two weeks with more than 9 hours of training (11 and 10 hours) which is pretty cool.

I may try for my five minute record on Alpine when I get back from vacation and it'll either be inspiring or a very, very rude awakening... :) if anyone wants to join me holla.
Activate Alpine power throw down.
(Coss-posting)

The flu will put a crimp in your fall training.  Go get a shot.

So I've been running quite a bit lately. First few times out were terrible -- I could barely string 10 minutes together. But after a few outings I've been able to put in semi-decent distances. As my "running legs" come back I think I'm definitely seeing the benefits of the aerobic base I've built through cycling. On the negative side, I'm now 2/3 of the way to full tri dorkdom. And my legs are hairy.
@Mark, be wary of water-sports during the remainder of your journey.  One day you'll wake up with a nasty hangover, a mystery transition bag next to your bed, and some white compression sleeves on your forearms.

all reaching for his wallet and pulling a Bento Box out of his pocket . . .
the answer to better performance: BEET JUICE!

@alyoshas - I think a pretty big part of that article is towards the bottom about certain mouthwashes killing off beneficial bacteria...

Also obligatory Simpsons reference (these are turnips though)...

Hey guys, I had a question regarding ‘Tapering down’ workload:

I have a century event in California Nov 9 (4,500 ft of climbing)- Its not a race but there’s an 8mile timed portion. My Cali posse and I are all in, lots of fun.  Anyways, the River Road (ranger station) hill repeats has been perfect for this, especially because the grade average is very close (6.5%).

My question is: I have till Nov 9, when should I peak? --  and what type of workload should I do to taper down between Peak time and Event day?

Joe Friel’s book ‘The Cyclists Training Bible' has been very helpful in many ways, but at the end of the day, its a book.

Let me know if anyone has any general suggestions.

big thanks. Joel

8 mile climb! That's probably about 45min. River Rd climb is about 6 min. There's a world of difference.

It is pretty much impossible to train for a 45 min climb around here. I would suggest you ride to Bear Mtn a couple of times if you are really serious. The climb from the bottom of Perkins to the top of Bear is not bad (still not 45 min). And you need the distance.

Others will give you better advice about peaking. But I would suggest that you should go hard up until Thanksgiving, then ease off for the 2 weeks before the event.

I hope there is beer involved. Otherwise this is not a good substitute for 'cross.
Thanks - Yeah, RR is only 1 mile give or take, i have to take what i can get -- But i'm making the most of it, as hill intervals. I wish I had the time for bear mt this month.

thanks again for the response.
ps. i don't cross but i DO beer.
cheers, man.

New roller workout recommendations?  Trainer is getting warrantied at CycleOps (free lifetime warranty! Man that 45% off deal was sweet), so busted out the rollers.   I just always do the same 3 or 4 ones I've always done.  Any leg speed workouts?

Ride the rollers, kids.
I like to do 30 minutes on the rollers.  at the 10 & 20 minute mark stand and climb for 3 minutes followed by 2 minutes of high cadence work...its enough to maintain your fitness level....

Hey guys, I had a question regarding ‘Tapering down’ workload:

Joel,
Don't assume that you need to climb for 45 minutes to get used to climbing for 45 minutes--though I don't know if this is what you were suggesting.  That is a threshold effort, so doing 3 x 15min threshold efforts with 5-10min rest in between, even if it's riding around Prosepct or Central, should do you well.

100 miles with 4500' of climbing is not that hilly.  in fact, you could easily get twice that if you selected your climbs carefully around here.  So worry very little about the hills.

Generally, the idea with tapering is to build yourself so that you're just about peaking with a week or two to go, and then cut your mileage and do enough short, hard efforts to make sure your body is still working well.

We have stage race taper recommendations in either this thread or one or more of the stage race threads.
Rollers?!? It's seventy five freaking degrees out dude!
Thats great feedback, M. Thanks for this! tapering to shorter but hard efforts make a lot of sense. Yes, as you've mentioned, I've been using the loop in Prospect park as well to build my capacity - Without a power meter, I'm going on HR and CAD ...and just basic feel. thanks again, much appreciated - I will look out for the other threads on the subject. see you out there sometime!

Time.  You forget I'm 20 minutes from Prospect, that's almost an extra hour round trip when you factor in all the junk that goes along with getting ready.

Plus training in Prospect is bor-ring and crammed after 7am.
