Training to Race: Faster, Stronger, Awesomer

High responder type - but you also need someone that is mentally engaged + less prone to injury to go beyond "amateur with nutty numbers." The book is pretty old now and I'm sure the studies it's based on are outdated, but The Sports Gene remains an annual reread for me.
I remember reading this in high school and it blew my mind, I should revisit it too-wonder how much has held up
to me, The Sports Gene is incredibly flawed.  While there was some interesting stuff, his blindness to doping seemed almost willful.

I mean it was deliberate for sure. I think that's why he led with the pro baseball sluggers vs collegiate softball pitcher story to set the tone of trying to find reasons why elite athletes succeed outside of just raw performance. He also originally wrote these chapters serially for Sports Illustrated (I think?) so I found the level of detail appropriate for the medium/channel.

He didnt say anything about the amount of crosstraining he did, right?
Sounded like it was almost 50%
So he does +/- 8 hours or solid workouts a week, well monitored by medical staff. With good consistency, few bad habits and a not too injury/illness prone body I’m not too surprised by his ftp to be fair.
Oh boy.... https://velo.outsideonline.com/road/road-training/blood-flow-restriction-the-most-mysterious-marginal-gain/
going to buy XS kit from now on for the blood restriction gainz
I just hit some five minute power numbers I haven't seen since 2012. You can't run from Father Time but I guess a good head start never hurt ;)
Let’s move this to the dopers thread 😂

I prefer to think that Jules just hadn't trained up to his potential then.  And now he is.

But, since you mentioned it, he is married to a doctor.
Now we should move this into the shit talking thread.

Interesting to see what a pro "heat block" looks like. This seems like something amateurs could be doing; equivalent to altitude benefits from what I understand...

Looks like five days, starting at 30 minutes going up to 50 or 60 minutes?

Almost as valuable as #looksharp

You cant #looksharp with hairy legs..........
I've been enjoying some (of what I suspect is) lifetime-best FTP recently so I thought I'd go find a 20 minute climb and see for myself.

It took a lot of searching but I found what I thought was my huckleberry; drove close to an hour to get there, scouted it and set off.

18.5 minutes later I got to the top. On the one hand, I'm pretty stoked to be reasonably fit again. On the other....

There is Late to the Party and then there is Late to the Party. Good lord.
I mean besides the spammy spamming spambots, they're not wrong? Late to the party, but hopefully not just before enshitification happens?

Isn't enshittifcation already beginning?
Outside of the AI stuff they tried to shoehorn into the platform, they seem relatively stable? Though I've been a paid account for most of the last decade or so and may not be seeing the ads or hitting paywalled features.
DC Rainmaker is always laughing at them for trying to make the platform worse with new features (while not solving obvious errors) but yeah I still enjoy using it a lot

Hoping someone has some insight on Garmin's "training effect" technology.

https://www.garmin.com/en-US/garmin-technology/running-science/physiological-measurements/training-effect/

I've been talking with a young guy about training.  I've made some interval suggestions.  They seem to be working.  All the same, he will do two identical indoor rides, and one will be classified as "endurance" the other "tempo."  Same speed, same time, same heart rate (doesn't have power yet).  I've read a bunch of posts on various peoples experiences, and there seems to be no understanding of the algorithm Garmin uses to get to its determination.

Apparently, the programming was from a company called First Beat.  Garmin licensed it, then bought it.  Various message boards seem to suggest the metric was meh from the start and there was a hope Garmin could improve it.  Doesn't seem like they have, nor that it's terribly helpful on a day-to-day basis.  Maybe its value is over weeks and months.

ANyone have an understanding of it?

If you get less tired, you'll ride better at the finish (haha)

This is a good one on the subject of recovery

I'm interested in some crowd sourcing for mobility work, I try to go to yoga around twice a week although lately that has fallen through, but in my goals to be a bit more comfortable and a bit more aero I'm open to what has worked for others. Not attempting to get to a Ben Healy slouch.
@RyanCollins - I've mentioned this to @KevinWomack - I would highly recommend adding a flavor (at least once a week) of pilates to your regimen. Activating and increasing your core strength will flow into all areas of strength, mobility and sustainability.
@RJ Simoni do you have a preferred flavor?
Start with mat. Graduate to heated mat. If you want to go advanced - then you move to reformer.

Mat = with balls, bands, weights. Reformer = the crazy machine with pulleys, moving benches, etc.
