For the record I did Greylock in 45:38 but I think I started about a mile earlier than they say cause I rode about 10 miles.

I'm going to try and go back and do a long ride again on a saturday. If there is interest perhaps we can arrange a group and "race" the course that I posted on my blog a few days ago.

Starting at the pavement change (rolling start @ 1-2mph), stopping at the little green No Trespassing Sign at the top of the bump prior to all the buildings and pumps and such. So, not as fast as Rich and others.

Next time I'll use the WDC/CRCA markers.

Can we decide on an official start and end point for the alpine TT course?

Start:
Slow rolling start at pavement change in boat basin.

Finish:
seems to be disagreement here.

a) There is an early finish that the true climber type guys like to use. I think it is marked by a "no passing sign" and is before the final dip towards the ranger station.

b) There is the propane take, that is used in some time trial course. It is behind a fence and not very easy to see.

c) And there is the end of the final uphill, right next to the ranger station. I'm pretty sure there is a sign there that we can use, but can't remember what it says.

I like to use where there is a pavement seam just after the circle for the start to the start of the triangle where the road forks for the finish.

Otherwise, just take a can of spray paint and mark a start and finish lines. Go for the longer marker.

Isn't this sort of thing what Strava is for, or your Garmin Edge?

The Ranger Station sign is probably the most unambiguous landmark for the finish. Nobody (save the Double Crossers) ever claims to "not see" the pavement change at the start.

To be fair though, we probably need 2 categories; Classic (standing start) and Flying Start...

This is a low tech solution. Even guys with those down tube shifters Marc likes to reference can participate!

The propane tank isn't even where the TT ended. They had a tent set up right in the center of that patch of grass, probably 5-10 seconds before the propane tank.

I vote for the passing sign at the top of the hill before it flattens out.

i always measure to the propane tank, as they did in the CRCA Alpine Time Trial - it is gigantic and bright white and quite easy to see

i think that the NO PASSING sign is probably the most unambiguous stopping point, and probably the best measure of pure climbing ability (no false flats/power sections/flat sprints after the climbing is done).

so yeah

recap: START - pavement changed at boat basin (as slow as you can and stay upright). FINISH - the "No Passing" sign on your right after the last steep ramp

JP is spray paint legal? If so I vote to spray a little k at the top and bottom on the side of the road

I agree with WDC.

The problem with even the largest propane tank in the world, is that the further it gets from the road, the more open to interpretation your literal and figurative view of the finish line is. I'm sure there's an actual optical theory/perspective that maybe one of the clubs designers and/or geometry nerds could use to quantify what I'm talking about, but I think you all get what I mean.

The problem with JP's finish "at the start of the triangle where the road forks" is that does anyone else know where the hell he's even talking about? harhar.

On a more somber note; a friend at work is just heading into court tomorrow for the Civil suit of his partner who was killed by an SUV in 2008 while riding her bike. No criminal charges, of course.

Yeah, it's really sad that "I didn't see you" is a legitimate excuse for running over (and killing) a cyclist who is obeying all the proper laws. That doesn't seem to work for car v pedestrians or car v car...

took it to a dark place there. sorry. Anyhow I bet there will be some sort of marks on Alpine next weekend for the ride.

My wife is friends with Laefvre's girlfriend. She says there's a video of the death that she's been fighting to see but NYPD won't let her.

^ this adds to the growing list of reasons why the NYPD needs federal oversight.

To be recognized in this smack talk thread, you must start in the boat basin at the pavement change from a track stand. I think this is a good place because it forces you to commit to riding the climb hard.

Also, why wouldn't the video become public record? Like 911 calls. Although those can contain lots of personal medical info.

I just wonder why on they release 911 tapes anyway. I remember thinking that when Shatner's wife died. How is it in the public's interest to hear this? It's such an invasion of privacy. What possible good can come of it?

I guess I could see it if the tape becomes part of a criminal trial. But why are we telling the Demi Moores of the world that they better not call 911? You could imagine a celebrity not wanting to call 911 for fear of a tape getting out, then ending up endangering their life or that of someone else. It seems so obvious to me that this is wrong that I think I must be missing something. Why is this legal? Lawyering people out there, help me...

I also did Alpine in 2 minutes.

Alpiners: I like the 2-course approach, the short-course finish at the No Passing sign and the Long-course finish at JP's mysterious triangle finish --which, by the way, if you get there fast enough and roll over just the right spot you will be instantly veloported to the base of Rockland at which time --just around the corner at Bunbury's-- Dan Chabanov will start grinding your espresso beans and place a muffin in the toaster for you which will be perfectly warmed when you arrive... however, upon arrival you will find that that your espresso and the muffin are being consumed by Keith who --coughing-up muffin crumbs-- reminds you that THAT finish line is HIS finish line and you should stay well short of it.
