Alpine PR's

It was fun to watch my times increase by over a minute as my HR went up from the first to the sixth alpine repeats today. The last couple were pathetic. But I passed a senior citizen on a beater bike so I feel GREAT. I think fastest was around 5:40. Not good.
Marc, I know it has been said before but, there are rules...

doing several in a row under 6 minutes is NO JOKE

truly a burly workout
No, the last couple were closer to 7. That's why I said they were pathetic. As Jules pointed out, I'd probably be better served to do 6-8 repeats @ 6 minutes-ish to raise threshold. All this "coaching" speak is confusing to me....

Thanks, Jules!
I do realize that everyone's on a different training program; but for me, the thought of doing hill interval repeats in February gives me cramps in the fleshy thighs and my brain. Let's not forget about endurance rides and longer threshold intervals. The bigger your base, the higher your peaks.
I feel like this is turning into an 80's don simpson/jerry bruckheimer film where Marc plays the sage like avuncular character who has to instill discipline into the talented but scattered prodigy.

just let them suffer, as they wish.
Jeff,
What threshold is being trained by emptying yourself 6 times at 6 minutes per effort?
BTW, it should be noted that I was feeling a bit ill today. Just to make sure I didn't ride too hard, I took William's water bottles in my pockets and Norm's bike over my shoulder. And exactly a pound out of Marc's fleshy thighs.

Imagine my surprise to find on my first Alpine effort, I actually finished before I started. -0:45.937 to be exact. A new pr. And one I'm going to have a hard time besting. I brought along a GoPro camera, but something about going back in time made the thing malfunction.
I think sometimes its easy to let our times on Alpine become the metic of our conditioning. But really, all it is is a measure of your 5 minute effort, which doesn't need to be very good in February.

I've done Alpine 15-20 seconds faster than I'm doing it now. But for Februaray I'm in better shape and I think more prepared for racing than I have been in any of my previous seasons.

The reason is, that with the exception of a couple of group rides, I haven't done a hard effort of less than 10 minutes (and very few less than 20) in months.
jp just made me yuckle
Did 5:10 last saturday.
"no passing" sign, i assume?

The only finish line for me.
fucking burly
Burly indeed. Watts?
Joe is putting out my 5 min Watts at 25-30 lbs lighter!

My best last year was 5:16. Saturday I did 6:08 from a dead stop at 120% FTP.
Posted By: Ryan JI did the new Alpine course in 3:59 this morning. Beat that.
I had to email Ryan to make sure he was kidding, and he told me that "gullible" isn't in the dictionary any more. Can you believe that?!

That's some snappy work on the pedals Joe! Real nice! --meanwhile, I was way back of your draft at 5:39 on Sunday.
Any non-Giro del Cielo racers planning on testing out the new smooth Alpine climb on Saturday?

If I don't do Cielo I may go represent at this. Not sure if I can beat Nick Van Winkle though!

Richard Scudney from Asphalt Green is no slouch either. He was KOM of TOC in my Cat 4 field last year.
Hell yeah
Thinking about it.  If I go, it will be as the first test on a longer ride.

I've heard that if you don't race, you can't win.  Not sure if this has been proven yet.
I think I'm in for this. Any other takers?
I just signed up.
Would this count as a "race" to get out of the 5s or do they need to be mass starts?

I'm pretty sure that they need to be mass starts.

You should do it anyway.

Vlad is correct.
