River Road / Palisades / 9W rides WEEKDAY

Lol. good post Jim. I know what you mean. Every once in awhile I find myself at the back of a prospect park race.. a few weeks ago it was at the finish and a Gran Fondo jersey wearing dude was getting all up in our race. It wasn't as crazy as that dreadlocks guy spinning at 180 rpm dude... but still dangerous and not good.

The other option is to simply wait until he is on your wheel and ever so gently sit up. Let the group ride away from you. That is probably more dickish than necessary but it gets the point across especially if he won't listen in the first place.
Posted By: mugwumpWDC, are you reading this? Etiquette alert!

Yes, peoples, even if the roads are public, the right thing to do is to ask if you can sit on a group of individual that passes you on the road. Few will say no. If they do, it's either because they're doing a specific drill that you'll mess up in some fashion, or because they're jerks. In either case, you don't want to be behind them.
@ JP - you are totally right. I even do this in Prospect Park with guys I know. You never know, they might be doing some important workout or whatnot.

Maybe we can make little laminated cards with sentence starters.... I do this for my students who struggle with verbal communication.

Hi, I'm __________ "Do you mind if I sit on your wheel?"

Hi, I'm ______________" Do you mind if I join in your rotation?"

I think part of the problem is there are many "racing groups" like Wednesday morning World Champs in Prospect Park, so a lot of uninitiated folks thinks we're always hammering and racing and all you need to do is jump in and get rolling.
Dude didn't have brakes. Oil and water.
the stealth draft is the most fred of all fred maneuvers. totally irritating.
The other day with whitey doing tempo w/ some sprints mixed in, some dude was sitting on my wheel the whole time until I just verbalized my frustration and said: 'dude, i'm trying to do a workout, it's really distracting to have someone on my wheel. thanks' he nodded and buzzed off. the guy was in a full radioshack outfit w/ no helmet and a poney tail, dunno if any of you have seen him before. Another good way to get rid of pests is to just kick it hard on the incline before GAP (hr 190+) if not doing a strict workout.
snot rocket
Anyone want to go out and hit some hills tomorrow in an overall hammerfest?

9:40am at the NY side of the GWB.
I guess you all prob know this, but DOT is repaving Alpine for the next few weeks so it's closed. It'll be awesome when it's finished, but you'll have to chose other hills to hit for a bit.

I ended up doing hill repeats up the first climb of RR this morning instead.

Feels good man.
Any reco's on alternate hills for repeats? I want to go out on Sunday for some climbing.

Lil Tor....Ash St. (out of Piermont)...and there's another one through the suburban neighborhood along the traditional Kissena route that Neil, Marc and I rode last winter (can't recall the name) that was a nice steepie....smooth road, too.
Jeff, if you don't know the climb out of Piermont that goes up and up and up it's a great one worth learning.
The suburban climb to which Dave Stearns is referring is called Speer Avenue (East from Lydecker Street). It;s relatively short but steep (12-14%), smooth, and usually very quiet (few cars , if any). In can be incorporated as a relatively minor variation on the usual Kissena route north.

Ash to Hillside to Tweed to Nike is good fun.
I'll be out tomorrow. 9am GWB?
Jeff, I'm looking for about two hours. I can be at the bridge at 9:40, maybe 9:30. If you need to go earlier, no problem.
Weather permitting, I'll be out but looking to start at 8am so's I can get a longish ride in before work.
Keith wants to do 8am @ GWB too.... ungh!

Bradley-watertower and back past hook mountain and home? If we hammer that would put us at GWB at 11, right? Keith has to be back by noon.
Ended up bagging this morning anyway - laundry instead. The FBF kit needed a serious scrubbing.
Tomorrow for sure - 8am from GWB. Piermont, Ash, Tweed, etc.
anyone for a wet and wild wednesday?  talking 6/13 blues.

Khan
Can't.  But Thursday and Friday are good.
Coming out tomorrow.  Looking for hammerfest.

Race rockleigh instead. dooooo it.

Saw Volbach going up to tweed/bradley today with an axis dude after I emerged from a trail ride on a cross bike. Everyone else was on a proper mountain bike, lots of running up was involved. And lots of jersey toothpaste.
What the hell is jersey toothpaste? Should that be a capital J?
ALERT!  The Fort Lee police are fat and bored, errrrrrr, handing out tickets for getting back on the GWB in the incorrect manner!

I got one for the classic Johnny Wrong Way, which succeeded in getting me TWO summons: one for driving on the wrong side and one for wreckless driving or something.

The great part was two women on hybrids who appeared to be around 55 were going slow, signaled properly for the left hand turn, and still got stopped.  Why?  B/c they had moved into the left lane to turn "too soon" and impeded traffic!  They tried to explain to the cop that if you stay right, then try to dart across the road you almost get killed b/c there's no light there and the speeding cars from the light up the road, and the non-sequenced light where they can turn right from mean you have to make a 4 lane mad dash.  He, of course, was a total dick and didn't give a shit.

Oh, he was also blocking the bike lane and part of the right hand lane with his unmarked car and stopping people going north if they didn't stop at that light.  Slow day over there I guess.  Be warned!

Any body have any experience pleading not-guilty with the Fort Wheeeeee po-po's?

And I got 2 flats and needed a boot to go along with the two summons.  And back in good ole NYC a jaywalking lady gave me the "running squirrel" routine, which made me do the fishtail skid action. These tires are new, woman!!!  It was the classic: they look right at you, see you coming, decide to step out and jaywalk anyway, and then freak out when you have to swerve to miss them.  How do these people survive on a daily basis?  Such an eventful day.

Other than that it was a nice 80 miler, and I gave a No-Tubes guy the fat boy special and never saw him again.  Tee hee. I'm sure he either wasn't trying or turned off.
Area man's quiet ride turns into Epic race report, complete with police chase. News at 11.
Wednesday 6/20 is the day.  I can't get on my bike until 11:30.  Anyone want to meet at the bridge at noon for a few hours of fun and pain?
