A more informative article about the Bay Area cyclist/pedestrian nexus

http://www.sfbg.com/politics/2012/04/05/was-cyclist-who-killed-pedestrian-reckless
I love reading these articles when there is an ad for a car dealership next to the article. Too bad the 20+ pedestrians killed annually by cars in SF isn't considered newsworthy (or criminal).
OK, now its in Velonews

Back to the good stuff.  If people haven't seen it recently, Strava seems to have been pretty well revamped.

a) it's 60 bucks per year for the premium edition (includes power analysis)
b) you can join the Kissena Cycling Club and track yourself vs teammates on your favorite segments

it's not a replacement for Training Peaks yet, but if you're starting to get excited about the spring season and your data, it's a fun diversion.

Oh, and DGG is killing us all right now...

Something that occurred to me the other day regarding Strava: I noticed that quite a few clubs' riders append club names to their Stava names (e.g. Joe Smith -- Kissena Cycling).  I think it serves as a decent advert for the club, especially when someone holds a KOM (the press from Malcolmson's KOM on the Manhattan Bridge would alone I imagine generate like a thousand new members).  Anyway I thought it was a good marketing tool, so worth mentioning.

@Mark I hope the press don't find out that my 2nd Manhattan Bridge KOM (now deleted) was achieved from the comfort of the Q train (accidentally left it on after Piermont ride)!  Which raises the question; does anyone know how to crop a ride that you made via iphone? It's a drag to lose mileage.

You mean crop a ride, say, from your PC, that you recorded from your iPhone?  Or actually crop on your iPhone?  The former you can do for sure; the latter I don't think so.

Just flag the ride as suspicious, strava will take care of the rest.
The Strava website allows you to crop the ride.

Jules im addicted to strava, no more training log books just upload and go. Plus the integration with instagram makes it a killer creative/ competitive tool

DG it's pretty nice. I think I own ash-tweed until you or Ryan notice though...
I'm currently in last place on the Ash segment, for the KCC riders.  It would appear I have some more hill work to do this spring. . .
the trick is to compete on segments that no one else rides.  then enjoy your reign as virtual KOM

Or make ramdom segments araound your block. King of your domain.
I'm the Strava king of my house's couch-to-fridge-and-back segment, total climbing = 13 stairs, net elevation gain = 0.
Dave - won't you be surprised when one day you wake up and I've ended your reign. Of course it depends what kind of beer is in your fridge.
Just joined Strava after reading the WSJ article on it.  http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324445904578284144255080394.html?KEYWORDS=strava

Pretty crazy how fast some people can ride the Prospect Park Lap.

Do you have to have the premium edition to follow other Kissena members?
Nevermind, figured it out.
ok, reasonably new to strava, and a big shoutout to Brendan for KOM on the hill in PP.... is that for real?  that seems superhuman... Where are the batteries, bob?
it does seem intense.  i got curious so i looked back at that ride.  looks like on that day i decided to do slow laps and then sprint up the hill.  the average speed for the whole lap was pretty slow. not so impressive after all!
also i've seen strava tell me i'm going .5 to 5mph when i'm not moving.  so i tend to take everything it says with a salt shaker

For my edification why is Strava useful as a training tool, as opposed to, say, a powermeter and WKO ?

it isn't for training, it is for setting silly "records" based upon random segments of roadway.
I train by hr and hours ridden, so don't need Strava for the training part, specifically.  But I do draw inspiration from seeing what kind of training others are doing, especially people I compete against during races.  I also deliberately attempt to set PRs on certain climbs and sprint sections, to see if I'm getting stronger.  I may go after the Kissena KOM on Manhattan bridge sometime this summer, if the GPS doesn't keep placing my ride in the East river instead of the bridge.

But Strava is mostly social, and lets me see what others are doing, and I do check in with people if they haven't ridden in a while, to make sure they're ok.
I dont have a cyclocomputer or anything so i have been using the strava app on my phone as a training log more than anything. i like that they provide you graphs with how your training load is progressing week after week.

if im feeling weak or strong one day, i can refer to the days or week before and then make a decision on how to continue with training. the social aspect is a bonus for me.

Overall, a cheap training tool albeit not ideal for everyone.
I can see how it could be useful for someone who doesn't have a power meter.
Aren't people cheating by just using it in a car and going slightly above winning times?  Not that *I* would ever consider cheating (except for fantasy cycling).
yeah i don't have a power meter and don't want to throw down on a computer yet...so i'm left with strava, which costs $0

maybe it's not free after all? those gas bills add up
is irving abbott a member of kissena?  does anyone know him?  every time i go for a ride i receive kudos from him.  it's flattering, but i'm beginning to fear that he's going to lie in wait for me and try to give me some 'kudos' in a dark alley or something
Brendan - never heard of Irving, but I have a Jae Real (fka Jae Burgoes [sp?]) following me and doing the same thing. It's more than a bit weird.
