Irving Abbott, Jae Real?

I don't know what you guys are complaining about.  You're nobody unless you have a stalker.  I have a guy in Oakland, CA giving me kudos, but at least it's not every ride.
i hope that one day my appeal will become national like yours JP.  irving abbot claims to be located in yonkers.
@Craig Zolan Jae Real is in Queens and was wanting to join the club a while back. I messaged him to come to a new member ride, but he said he has two young kids and couldn't work the schedule. He seems like an OK guy. I've grown used to getting Kudos for riding to get the paper in the morning. Maybe he's using the Strava Kudos bot?
the strava kudos irving abBot?  it's all clear now...
Just don't lose your cool if you lose your KOMs, like the Fuhrer...

KOM on S. Mountain Road @ orchards, who's your daddy?

Strava is sending me to the Rapha Gentlemen's ride this weekend on a more humble note, and not because of my prowess.

This bears explanation, as we all know you're no gentleman.
i know, I was surprised myself! being french does have its advantages and disadvantages.
Merde alors. Je suis très affecté que je n'ai pas été sélectionné.
is that google translate? tu devrais! nothing to do with being french, I was just using that as an excuse for my irreproachable behavior.
i'm so confused.

in other news, i sense irving abbot likes this conversation.
@alyoshas - sort of. Merde alors is in my vocabulary. I started with Je suis très affecté and then needed something to add to it and had google come up with the rest. The whole sentence seems reasonable in google translation.

i was being mean on purpose and didn't even really think it but yea, it doesn't sound right- not something u would really hear roll of the tongue.

I haven't thrown the banhammer around on Strava; we've had a few people associate themselves with our club who aren't members - on balance I think it's better to "be cool" than to get all agro about who call themselves "Kissena" on Strava.

(USAC on the other hand is a different matter)
Yeah Jules is right, it's defffffffinitely not Kosher to misrepresent Kissena on USAC!  :^)
Too funny: apparently I have a KOM I never knew about

Go ahead lads, have it it.  Good luck.
i like how your strava pseudonym is J R.
now this is the kind of drug-related honesty policy every cycling team should adopt:

hahah, it only has one member...
my weekend conquest of rural cazenovia, ny has further proved that the secret to Strava KOM's is to ride stretches of road no one has ridden before.  i am now KOM.  the mountain is only 2 other people, however.
king of the molehill?
bruce: i see what you did there.  just got an e-mail.  i will defend my honor.  http://www.strava.com/segments/atlantic-ave-brooklyn-bridge-2322367

actually i won't because that segment of road should not be ridden at speed.  that KOM was from a different time in my life, before I'd realized how easy it is to get hit by cars.
Ha, I got an email this morning that Rylan Crooks had matched my KOM - Strava must be cycling through some of their segments.  I believe the day I did this, last year, the street lights all aligned, there must have been no traffic, or a taxi stopped to pick someone up, blocking all traffic, and, well, I've got nothing else. . . I don't like the segments with street lights, cross walks, stop signs.  If you take this KOM from me, I'm going to have to believe you have better street light luck than I do!  And you might be faster.  But it's luck. . .
Strava has a nice feature now where people can flag segments as dangerous.  Blasting though downtown bridge traffic would seem like a good candidate...
this segment is up clinton st over to the bridge.  heavy traffic, car and pedestrian, on that road.

yeah i've flagged segments as dangerous before.  i did it on 5th ave.  no one should be trying to KOM when there is a bus route on that road, loads of pedestrians, tons of cars, and occasionally no bike lane except for some sharrows. all it takes is one dufus in the opposite lane turning left in front of you.
Nobody should be trying to KOM *anything* on city streets IMHO.

Best case you get a KOM.
Worst case you hit somebody with a stroller/walker/parent with ergo/car/bus/truck/cement mixer etc.

There are no upgrade points or prize money for Strava.
I've been enjoying Strava segment analysis --makes tracking my performances a little easier and more fun. Having other riders' data for comparison seems useful for goal-setting and for judging fitness at particular times.

Comparison tab: One of the nicest little features is the Comparison tab on segment screens, which shows your performance on that ride vs. the segment KOM guy vs. your own PR on the segment. I'm not sure how valuable it is training-wise, but it's neat.

Sprinting: I've also found that riding with hundreds of other cyclists everyday has prompted me into doing more sprints --that is, short segments. Since I live in a central part of Portland, little uphill bridge sprint segments frequently feature at the beginning and end of my rides, so I get warm-up sprints in early and final sprints in at the end of the rides. On hard training days, the end-of-ride sprints help ensure I clear out as much energy as I can. Sometimes I've thought my legs didn't have anything left, but I sprinted anyway and did well.

note: I don't go for PRs in heavy traffic or on shared paths (well, I'll do the latter if it's a weekday and no one's on the path... and this is only on very wide open paths with good sight lines).

+1 for the comparison tab. it's a really neat feature.

i will admit that last night i hammered a particular segment in prospect knowing that there was a KOM available. in my defense it was safe and away from traffic. i still felt a little douchey afterwards though.

on the plus side i took the KOM, but it's shared with a CRCA guy. my new season's goal, my single and only focus, is to shave off 1s from that time.
I want to hate Strava and yet I found myself out on Ash/Tweed/Nike trying to best Chabanov's time.

SMH

at myself
Yeah, there is a virtual herd mentality about the thing. I think that's good for me, as I've had to focus very hard on what's important to me on a given ride --and I've become much more civil. Not that I was a raving lunatic on the road in the past, but I had plenty of moments wherein I felt it proper riding at high speeds where I shouldn't have. And perhaps Portland's easy-going, more polite cycling community (broadly speaking) is changing my tune as well.

And yet I found myself hammering a descent through neat tunnels one afternoon, approaching 40mph, winding through the curves, another curve and "oh shit!" there's a car stopped 100m in front of me... emergency counter measure ho! Fortunately, I avoided crashes, but it was rather harrowing. In that case, I would've been hammering down that descent anyhow because it's so much fun. I wasn't even thinking of Strava (perhaps because my sorry descender self will never come close to a KOM on a mountain descent).

Anyhow, I think Strava may be helping some riders, perhaps most, think a lot more about what they're doing out there. This may be a reaction/response to all the negative press, in that most good-natured riders want to be sure not to be *that* Strava asshole.
