Love it!
That is so fetch !
I read that and suddenly think Strava is now cool instead of uber-fredly
so, I was finishing up my ride on 9W today.  Riding solo, tapping out a high tempo, went hard over stateline, hard over the next hill, motoring the false flat before the scout camp.  As I'm riding the false flat I pass three guys, one with a tri' bike, riding what looked like endurance pace.

I go over the scout camp entrance and keep going.  Figure I'll start picking up the pace.

Then my spidey sense tingles.

I look back.

The three guys noodling are now going full gas wiht the tri' guy teeth bared and giving it his all.

I jump on.  They're not smooth in the least so I hang back, let them do the work.  One guy in particular, on a Dogma with Campy EPS ($17k bike) can't decide if he should ride straight behind the guy in front of him, to the left, or to the right.  I try to let the others take his wheel.  but they don't.

They're really killing it.  Making all the lights.  Getting sloppier.  As we do the rise by the gas station in englewood cliffs, the EPS guy is out of the saddle going for it, super sloppy.  He hits a pothole and his seat bag tumbles off.

Me: "Yo, dude, your seat bag fell off."

EPS: "Uh...I'll go back for it later, I'm going for a Strava."

He and the other two are beating their bikes for all they can.  The get to the light at Palisades ave and pull the plug.

No idea if he went back.
Nice coverage on that segment attempt JP. That could make for an interesting diversion... be a Segmentality Searcher, like a storm searcher, except you go out to video and report on goofy guys going for segments.

n.b. Please don't film me.

I feel like this just about sums these guys up:

I just uploaded that ride into Strava.  EPS is Mauricio Sanchez.  He now has the KoM for Kiku to Palisades avenue.  I'm second by 15 seconds.  Also thanks to his group, I'm now third in the KoM for Kiku to Clinton ave. by 5 seconds.

I shouldn't have sat up when he was thrashing all over the road. I should have attacked him.

Sounds like its time for operation "reclaim the Kiku run"
It would have been hilarious if you yoinked their Strave KOM at the line.
i believe we discussed this at Hot Bird, but Kissena needs to form a later-night/early morning train and take all the bridge KOMs from brooklyn to manhattan.  paceline, away!
Anybody who posts this as their Strava photo probably deserves to have at least one KOM taken away... I mean, he might be the nicest guy in the world for all I know... but we should try and shatter it anyway.

anyone else noticed that the alpine / ranger station climb segments have been dropped on strava?  the last couple of times i have ridden the segments, they've not been picked up -- even when i look through the hidden list.

yeah i know it's fredly to notice this.
@Mark

They'll pull "dangerous" sections - not sure how they manage uphill vs down but if people are bombing the Alpine climb that might explain it.  I'd just write them and ask.
Anyone can flag it as dangerous and it automatically (?) gets removed. Only takes one person clicking once

No, I think it takes more than one person.  Somebody at Strava has to agree.

Is there a mountain between Stuyvesant and 72nd?
Here is a plea against Strava "doping" and a rif on The Stig. http://youtu.be/x5b6-UAPvpg
Now this is a great idea:

The fact that you cannot type in a location in Strava and see a “heat map” for what’s been ridden most today, this week, this month, this year, but instead see a leaderboard of many dumb segments for these same time periods is, well, it is a shame.

culled from the comments of the following rant:

They're working on it.  Or, at least, they did it once

http://engineering.strava.com/saturday-heatmap/

http://www.strava.com/saturday-heatmap#0|12|3|30.50000|-40.80000

I think I see you racing in the park!
http://www.strava.com/saturday-heatmap#0|12|13|40.65472|-73.93185

I want one feature, and one feature only; turn on my device and show me on a map who of my "friends" is out already and close...
It's amazing to see the heat from the GWB to Piermont ride.

^ What you're seeing there is a phenomenon called Fred Warming.

I've often thought it would be cool if there were some way to see daily, weekly and monthly leaderboards for
popular segments. In many ways, this would be much more fascinating/social/useful than the absolute KOMs that are currently visible. A KOM is neat, but wouldn't you rather see who's been out hammering recently, or how you stack up on a given day? Heat mapping might be one way for Strava to automatically decide which segments should become eligible for this treatment (or at to get the ball rolling while they amass further computing power).
that's a good point, Former Neighbor Joaquin.

something else i've thought about is that rides you do with others shouldn't get you a KOM as a solo effort.  i was riding some random roads upstate last week and noticed that the KOM on one segment was actually 2+ guys riding together and, based on their speed, probably doing a bit of effort sharing.  not to mention that the lap times i set in PP during races are much faster than i'd ever manage on my own.  so now my "personal record" in PP is a completely irrelevant number that i can never ever personally obtain all by my wonesome.
^that's a good one

I'm snagged a strava KOM over here in little rock arkansas.... I might be fat from BBQ but I can still drag myself over a 4 minute climb.

Jersey Mike,
I'm friends with Matt Heitmann.  I'm going to tell him you took it and he'll come over from Switzerland to grab it back.
