Training Camps

Well, that sucks. I think I see a Cannondale in your near future. Also, maybe it's worth investigating if a carbon repair shop can fix it so it can at least be the backup bike.
Cue crabon Yaks comment.

I really want to ride here another month. It's so sad to be barely acclimated to killing yourself up long hills only to leave.

American only charged me $25 each way for the oversize bike bag. They asked me if I was a musician (tats come in almost as handy as expired paramedic licenses) so I guess they thought I was a rock star with a triple ax git fiddle.

That frame is KAPUT !!!  Now there is a certain Ti frame, circa 1999,  that once had a non-drive side carbon crank snap off at the pedal spindle...I don't know who the mystery man of steel is who accomplished this feat...but close examination reveals an Axis-Furniture Company kit.  Closer examination reveals 6/4 titanium dropouts that could snap machine tools like they were made of....wait for it.... c.a.r.b.o.n
Try to warranty the frame? Cracks in dropouts arguably not normal wear and tear. Worst case scenario they say no.
Ugh. So sorry to see that, Jules.

Virgin America is usually my go-to airline, but after recent adventures in randomly priced oversized fees (if I prepay $25 for a checked bag but then find out that bag is actually $50 because it's a bike... why don't I get a $25 credit towards the bike fee?) and my "standby" redeye last night (on a ticket purchased 2 months ago, and seat selected through online check-in 24 hours in advance) I'm going to start shopping around. Owens knows what's up. Although Virgin did eventually seat me in a row full of NYC bike racers... people who's bodies generally don't spill over their arm rests, who don't cough on each other, and who value 6 hours of sleep.

Anyway. HUGE round of applause to Ryan for organizing such an amazing(ly brutal) training camp! All rides were expertly planned, routed, and marshaled. Just enough diversity of terrain and recovery to make it back up those hills the next day... albeit a bit slower. And there's nothing quite like the thrill of going 40+ mph down a descent with a gorgeous ocean on one hand and the knowledge that you're probably going UP this thing in less than 24 hours on the other. Seriously. When I told the Team Sixcycle guy sitting next to me that we went up Las Flores, he triple checked that I had, indeed, said "up." The past few days have set a new threshold for fun. Thank you, Ryan!

Here's my camp rundown (I'm sure it will be similar for all of us):

Time moving: 17h:39m
Distance: 273.8 mi
Elevation gain: 19694 ft

Such good times.

So glad to see all of my KCC homies.

I'm sitting at work now, but my mind is still on vacation.

Oh . . . and Ryan and I were talking about DESCENDING on Saturday.

I told him that watching Fabian in this video made a big difference in my technique: keep your torso upright, tilt the bike, drop the inside leg if it's really sharp.

FWIW:
The head of Speedplay told me this was Cancellara playing around: Fab can go much faster.  Watch him put the screws to Gerrans and Nibali at San Remo.

Torso upright is only when you want to slow down.  Cancellara is on the drops the whole way and his torso is pretty flat much of the time.

And "drop the inside leg if it's really sharp"?  Don't know what this means.

I'd also look at how Fab keeps his head perpendicular to the ground on the tougher curves.

but yes, JP, what i meant was - imagine keeping your torso perpendicular to the ground.
le sigh.
If you were wondering why there was a guy hiding in the bushes on Saturday's second climb, here's a bunch of photos from Rock Store photos...

Looking through the whole gallery, there were a couple groups of NYC folks out there this weekend: http://shop.rockstorephotos.com/p809424401
Why do I weigh the same as I did before the trip? I look a bit skinnier. Must be ALL MUSCLE
For the third consecutive year I had an awesome time at this camp. Pretty great to see such a large KCC group out here this time. While I skipped some of the epic scenic climbing, I (twice!) was able to get out and ride the amazing LA Velodrome and it's 250 meters of rollercoaster-like blistering speed.

I also got to really enjoy LA and explore the area a bit more this time.

Thanks again to Ryan for organizing and leading the rides.

Now it's packing time and back to not so warm & sunny NYC...
I don't mean to sound self-involved but god those hot pink shades are just SO hot

I thought it was just eyeliner, but it turns out, Ryan actually has a REAL six-pack

Cmooooooooooooooon JP, I believe in you!  You can figure it out!  If you do I will give you a Clif bar at Grant's Tomb.

Thank you, Ryan!
Thank you Ryan, thank you Ryan, thank you Ryan!

Forgive me if this has already been noted. But you should check out Erika's impressive strava rankings on these climbs. It looks like were have a ringer.

Looking handsome, fellas.

good lord . . . these summer weight jerseys . . . you can almost see my eyeliner sixpack through the material.

i've said it before and i'll say it again: white bellies make us look fat!*  let's switch to KCC blue in the next design!

* if you don't believe me, just look at Anthony in the black/orange Princeton U kit . . . he's a chuggard IRL but looks like Kate Moss in this picture!

just to be clear, though - you guys are very handsome and that was a hell of a climb/photo op

miss you already!
So. . . when is the next training camp? I caught on halfway through (due to twitter photos) that this was happening. Would love to join something like this, especially since I just signed up for Ride the Rockies in June and need some actual hills to climb.
Want to descend Latigo?  It looks like this...

Day 2 descent...

@Meredith. This is short notice but I know of a camp that is happening next week in Tucson. Co-ed. 8 riders, 2 USAC coaches. 4 big days of riding and 2 easy days. There is also the option of doing the local Shootout, (but I don't advise it after a hard week.)

I did the camp last week.

Ride time = 21:41
Distance = 349 miles
Climbing = 21,182 ft

I think they have a single slot open in the last week. PM me if interested.
Another from Day 2...

Jules: I love these.  Awesome.  SABOTAGE!!!

May I borrow the GoPro for a downhill next year?
@WDC of course.  The videos would be much better if I was good enough to start at the back and pass everyone instead of starting, and staying back there...
Oh, and thanks!
:)
