@dstears. Not exactly sure the answer to your question, but I might speculate that if the image size exceeds a certain threshold, then vanilla creates a thumbnail for in-line display.

Let try it with a small image that I will "attach" below.

OK, Here you go. After Attaching the file, you mouse over the attached image (before posting) and then a link appears at the bottom that says "Insert Image". If you click on that link, it actually inserts the full size image into your post.
