Cool photoset of the now defunct Union Square Crit (mixed in with random World Champ photos) from 1982...

@Jules

I showed this to my friend who is an ex-racer and native New Yorker. . He was wondering where you found this etc?

He really got a kick out of it as did his friend apparently.

You really made my friend Mike's day since that was the first race he ever entered: "Ah, the golden days, when I was young and you could buy smack in Union Square Park.

This was the first open race I ever entered. I was spat out the back of the 3/4 field after a few laps.

I recognize a bunch of the riders. Photo 99-Brian Searchinger, NYS state road champ; Photo 95--second wheel is Bruce "Torch" Donaghy, one of the guys I trained with in FL the coming year; #131 is the guy who won the race (dude named John something from NC), he got away, mashed a huge gear and won solo; at the front in #111 is Ian Jackson, another FL guy; #14 is my buddy Vince McDonald who can be seen in the opening sequences of the cinema classic, Key Exchange. "

Craziest thing I've seen in ages... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xzSJsD-ICOA&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DxzSJsD-ICOA

Pretty crazy footage from the San Rafael Twilight. Might be worth watching on mute unless you're a fan of awful fart step dub step. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1V5rARJEEM

My aversion to all things carbon has led many to believe that I am a Luddite.  Not true, in fact without the panoramic technology in my i-phone 5...my new profile pic would not be possible...

RIDER VS BIKE: WHICH MAKES THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE

While I understand the jerseys are in chronological order, the symmetry is all off. You really should have the dots jersey in the middle.
True Craig...but a reshoot is impractical as I have already placed them into a cryogenic deep freeze.  Dropping them in was easy...its the getting them out part that sucks...
Curiously no mention of the fact that through the years those Jerseys have been supported by a team riding 90% carbon bikes...

Of this there can be no question....but let's also honor some welded frames that have blazed a path...Mattio Montesano and his aluminum Co-Motion, Al Barouh and his CAAD 8, Dan Reiners and his Cyfac, Tito and his CAAD 6, Jim Nelson and his Van Dessel Hellafaster, William Doyle Capitmon = Hellafaster, Clayton Bruckert = Hellafaster, David Yang = Schwinn Paramount STEEL baby, Aaron Blume = Felt aluminum, Brendan Rigby = CAAD 10, Eloy Anzola = System Six (there is aluminum sandwiched in there, Dan McMahon = Merlin titanium, Dr. Charlie = Litespeed Titanium....there are more but I am old and forgetful....
Norm Swygart = Independent Fabrication steel & Spooky Skeletor
EGAD!

GuysGuysGuys ....

Yeah. Yacks's poignant tribute to the metal-riding Kissenas who won him so much Lycra glory was touching. Emotional stuff. What have you.

But I don't understand why everyone on this forum isn't FREAKING OUT about the crit video Wes posted. Because I am FREAKING OUT. I've watched it three times now. That's like 20 minutes of my life, people. There's this one part, when number 80 in the white was diving all kinds of crazy-ass inside lines and picking up 5, 6 wheels at a corner, and I was all, "dude, this 80 guy is SUUUPER SKETCH," and then BOOM!, two corners later his luck runs out! He touches wheels and hurtles backwards out of the picture like a freaking Tie Fighter running the Death Star gauntlet on Luke's wing. And what about the time when about five dudes right in front of the camera bro got so hopelessly tangled with each other that it could only be THE END, but somehow managed to do some kind of weird leaning-back-and-forth-come-on-shake-your-body-baby-do-that-conga-Miami Sound Machine routine, during which time they enter and exit a 90-degree turn, and when they finally get back on their own lines, some extremely-lucky-to-be-alive bro promptly ATTACKS! Why are people not talking about this?!

Vlad gets a pass. If he saw that video he's probably gone fetal in the corner of his apartment, alternately sucking his thumb and angrily berating some unseen antagonist.
#80 didn't touch wheels he got caught behind the guy high-siding straight into his HMO paperwork... 4:44 in...
This seems like a good idea...hold a crit, at dusk, with patches of stadium lighting, bar-grabbing metal barriers and a narrow course....What could go wrong?
Whitey since I can't send you a Xanax over the internet to calm your frayed nerves. I've decided to upload this JPEG which will wipe out any memory of the crit video (and may just wipe out any memory of anything).  I give you....Clay Aiken and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat !!!
You're welcome...
Yacks

bless your heart, chris
I have got to get a ram.  Look how cute and badass this little guy is:
