Juan Antonio Flecha now a commentator for Eurosport pointed out that at Le Tour, they have barriers that are angled back to keep spectators further away from the action.

It's Italy, guys. All of this is 100% the norm.

He was helped by the field pausing to get around the remnants of the break.  And I felt like the field didn't totally commit to chasing him down.  The Giant readout train disappeared early.  Sky was blocking, and the only team readout came from Tyler Farrar taking Boasson Hagen to the front.

Still, impressive effort.

Holy moly.

The comfort with which he swept through those turns...truly a master class. I usually groan when announcers talk about how well such and such is descending. Because frankly, it usually appears to be just solid, basic descending, not soaring excellence like you would have them believe. But this guy, on this descent. Watch how he rocks, rhythmically back and forth. Smooth and fast. At 3:25 especially. Reportedly he had done this stage or climb descent before. Attacking at the crest of the climb, building a 1:25 lead by the base of the final climb. Brilliant.
