brief race report cat5's; 7lap race, $50preem @4 togo

just Thierry&harry in 5's today - met at sign-in and for Thierry's his 1st race in PPK gave i him heads up on 'sketchy' pack behavior ie. stay left/right &out front in the top3rd of pack...also, suggested that if he is feeling well, after 2-3laps roll up front and feel the wind once or twice; race was not quite as 'hot' as last weeks 2lap CPK race(26mph avg), but most of the strong guys were present(less of course absentee Kissena's, Ashley, Ros&JoshC), my plan was to surf out front 3rd-6th position and mark any credible early breaks then if feeling it at 3lap togo, Attack! for a break away - i mentioned this to nemesis SammyT(honduran national champ/year2 in 5's...what-ever& still, quite strong) - but, unfortunately, even though my winter's thigh soreness seems to have receded and i felt spry/feisty today, i was up to my old tricks and did not 'conserve matches' in the early laps; i was off the front w/2notably strong riders over the 1st hill 'climb' we had a gap &i knew that at least one of 2 was capable of a race/win via a long break...sadly, it would have taken all 3 of us to stay away for long, so the break fell apart by the temple flats; more of the same through lap 4, Thierry made an elegant streak through 8-10leadres on lap3(?) past start/finish to top of hill...Bravo! TB; the bell on lap4 was for a $50 preem, the pack eased up over the hill then some dodgy riding out front by a strong-man in BMC kit (ie. 200m in rec. lane going down hill); i called him out "dq for #141 in BMC for the preem," as did others;...past the Temple pace picked up w/4-6guys on attack for the preem at start/finish, i followed @4 back &mistakenly, let up@200m out; as predicted 3of 4 guys in sprint used preem-sprint to go up the road including sammyT - basically, i missed my ride up to a potential winning break; once i/we realized they were up the road we deliberately&purposely brought them back by the climb w/2laps togo;...last lap, 1togo, included an attack from my 'failed breakmate on lap one' from the start/finish line, he managed about a 35m gap &i felt sure i could either join/bridge up to him on the hill or across the top of the park, with one other rider between us the field was neutralized by the passing pro1/2's at the hill and over the top of the park...this is where Thierry &a bunch of 5's crashed in the right gutter by PicNic House; i stayed with &caught the break...we ALL slowed hoping for some space between us & the Pro1/2's before our finish, after passing the Temple we had about 5-600m space, 'race-on,' i rode a couple wheels past the 'construction area/drum circle' then a pack of sprinters flew past me...at finish we were bunching up with the tail-end of the pro1/2's, but i didnt letup &slipped in along the right side white line to capture 6th - Ahhhh, just! out of the money..again. still, funRACE!

Thanks guys for all your support, especially Dan and Harry. My collarbone is smashed along with 4 upper ribs.But my lungs were not affected after cat-scan analysis. That crash was nonsensical since the race was neutralized and 4 guys piled up in front of me and i could not stop on time. My helmet was destroyed during the mayhem, however no signs of concussion emerged. Guess I am going back to the trainer for a while :(. I am going to miss the training with you guys,

...so cool calm and collected for a half broken rider, i seriously thought you may have only had a dislocated shoulder, ouch! that is a rough break, given your calm denenor after the fact it was impossible to suspect such damage.

i am so curious as to what &how this crash happened, i saw several destroyed helments! (3)
PLEASE ALL KCC friends &families wear your helmets (ie. Alyosha) it is too easy to ruin your all too delicate head. i know ity can be cool/pro to sport no hat but it is a risk!

I joined myself at the spring series race. We rode out together, discussed tactics, had our morning convocation by the bathroom, pinned on numbers, etc.

Knowing we had to options, we decided to sit back, skip the early rave and wait to see how the race developed. Amazingly, early breaks weren't happening. Early splits were, and more than a few times 15-20 guys would start rolling away from the rest. Not sure what this was about, but I rode past the back half up to the split pretty quickly just to be safe.

I figured the race would start to happen with 7 to go. Just as luck would have it, we overtook the 5's just after 7 to go. AVD was telling us to wait, but the moto went past the 5's so, there was no waiting. John Loehner (AXA/stans) put in a hard attack at the top of the hill, and I was full-on to get him. Quickly we had a group of seven guys. John, Jared (mengoni), Tony Taylor (Jordan), Dominican guy from Somerville, a GBSC rider, and a Krebs. The Somerville guy wasn't interested in working and the Krebs guy was struggling, but on our first full solo lap, we rode a 7:16, which just about broke a few of the riders. The Somerville guy was messing around, soft pulls, skipping pulls, hard pulls. John and Jared were pretty clear in their displeasure--I'm sure John tried to ride him off the back a few times and Jared was yelling (funniest--"just put on your brakes").

I had to be careful. John and Jared and Somerville guy all had teammates who could do somethign if this break failed. Taylor had teammates who weren't doing anything, as did the Krebs rider. Tony was going to take careful pulls until the end so we'd just stay away and he'd sprint. The somerville guy had the series leader. I figured I was the third-strongest of the group.

with four to go, it seemed like we got a gift; the bell was rung and the Somerville guy attacked. Someone thought he was confused about the bell. So we didn't break formation and took two miles to reel him in. He attacked again with 300 to go on the lap. Next time up the hill, John goes. Somerville is on him, as is Jared. Make the 4th strongest.

Problem is, this wrecks the rotation. The rest of us get back on, but John and Jared are trying to figure out how to dislodge Somerville. I ride by them to keep things going. We settle back in. Somerville guy messes around, the others sit up. I ride by...This happens again and again. Two to go and Somerville puts in an attack on the hill. Same scenario ensues. And because of this, we get caught at the bell. Someone else should be able to say what our gap was, but I'm guessing it was something over 45 seconds at a point.

I guess Jared ended up the winner in this game; his teammate Brian Breach won.

Update: I am still under some opioid (oxycodone) daze but I feel better, I am scheduled to see a orthopedic surgeon this week to get my clavicle pinned. I learned some hard lessons yesterday, never keep your guards down when the race is neutralized. I am bummed because my legs fell good and I was ready to hammer in the last 300 meters but it was good to see Harry attack like a mad man continuously!! Thanks again for all your support.

JP, awesome photo of you, except for the fact that your handlebars are pointing the wrong direction. to add insult to injury not only did your break get swallowed up on the bell lap, but you lose style points for having handlebars that totally don't look pro.
