Injury: Sprains, Strains, Breaks & Insurance

Got back in BK last night after spending 11 days in the hospital. It feels good to be back home and on the road to recovery. Thanks for helping me through this nasty injury and keeping my spirits up guys.
Welcome home Vlad.

Hooooray! Welcome back, buddy.
Welcome back Vlad!

Just heard today via the Grapevine that Erin Korff has a similar (probably worse) injury - earned hitting a patch of grease on the road while turning.

You guys should consider a subteam for recovery.

I was going to thank you for keeping our spirits up.  Any more photos of the hospital or your elbow?  Any tales of hobnobbing with sheiks?  What about sponge baths?

@mugwump, wait until you see the surgical scar and the ridiculous open wound (looks like I got bit by a giant sabertooth gopher). I could take a picture the next time I change the dressing if you'd like, but be warned that it's fucking disgusting.
Probably a Tiger...

CAN NOT BE UNSEEN. Best tattoo ever.
Lisa says "Get the wound vac back on that."

Heal up soon bud.
ok pics so it did happen.  Vlad isn't faking it.  You on the trainer or what? ;)
I'm still gaining strength and mobility in my left hand (and arm to a lesser degree). While it seems to be getting stronger every day, set up and tear down of the trainer is still a week or two away. I'd like to hit the stationary bikes at the YMCA this week to keep it simple and give the legs something to do.

The doctor said that I should now start bending my arm for 5 minutes a day in between dressing changes. I can move it about 10 degrees before it gets stiff and I feel crazy kinds of pressure and resistance. Weird. I'm hoping it loosens up over the next week or two. The plaster splint should be gone by then and I'll be starting serious PT and OT.

Looking forward to recovery and getting back out there with you guys.
I hear the new 2014 models are sweet...

Vlad, ignore Lisa.  "Wound vacs" are for pussies.

Seriously though, why is there a hole in your arm?

The article says I need to reach out to you.  Do you want to come in the car this Sunday with Ryan and me to The MA state Championships?  We're going anyway and I think we can squeeze you in the rental car.  You can work the feed zone.  As you only have one working arm, we'll need to stagger bottle hand-ups, so Ryan and I will chose beforehand which one of us will be in the field and which in the grupetto.
I've wondered about that hole in Vlad's arm, too.  Kind of worried he picked up an infection in the hospital.  I picked up one such infection, and it opened up a hole or two on my legs.
Degloving injury
@Adam, thanks for the invite but I've got my sights set on spectating at the Red Hook Crit and White Plains Crit this weekend. Good luck! I think you and Ryan can seriously mess with those guys. I suggest letting the locals do all the work. It's their state championship. It matters more to them. Tell them that.

@mugwump, that hole is there from the crash. The first surgery I had was basically to scrub and disinfect it. Then they spent the rest of the week pumping me full of antibiotics. It was an open fracture, which means that hole went down to the shattered bone. If that got infected, I would be in deep doo doo.

So far no sign of infection. I'm crossing my fingers that it stays that way as the hole closes up. Maybe another week or so. Will be a good day when it comes.
Good GOD. Is there a way to hide a thread? Degloving injury? Open fracture? I can't be reading this shit. It's making my knees feel tickly and weak and I kind of feel like I might piss my pants.

Shameless Plug, but if you live in the Slope you should know about this place

I wanted to post a followup to my knee shenanigans from earlier.  I ended up taking close to eight weeks completely off the bike after the "best" off season I'd ever had.

I returned to training gingerly; 10 hours in April, 23 in May, 24 this far in June...

Today I did a field test and did better than at any time in 2012.  Obviously your mileage may vary but keep this tale in your brain banks when the old terror of "oh god I've taken so much time off I'll never be fast again" comes a knocking.

Sometimes rest is an amazing thing.

Peace.
nice one jules.

now, onto my taint.  went long today and now its agony; never suffered it this bad before... i think maybe it's to  do with the heat / perspiration.  i can barely sit.  some questions:

1) what's the best course of action here?  vaseline and a few hours' standing?
2) does anyone want to come rub it better?
I wash it clean and then keep it moist with vasoline. But if you've broken skin I do neosporin. Don't sit in nice things. It hurts.
Do  you use chamois cream? I'm almost sure that it has some kind of antibiotic creme in it and this probably will  help you out.

For an acute problem (although you haven't really described it to us) I can tell you that Desitin is a miracle ointment. Almost like those Sci-Fi movies where the creature waves their hand over a wound and makes it heal in real time. Desitin totally repels water also and makes you smell like a new born.

And don't use dirty bike clothes.
Mark

In general there are a few rules of thumb for care & feeding of the taint-ular region but they all revolve around keeping & getting the area clean:
  1. use chamois cream (most have some kind of anti
  2. never ride dirty bibs
  3. GET OUT OF YOUR DIRTY KIT ASAP (bummer for the post-race hangout) sitting around in sweaty bibs is begging for trouble

All of the above, especially chamois creme that has some antibacterial action.  I like the DZ Nuts with tea tree oil, as stupid as the name is.
