If I was near the spot and had some time, I'd canvas.  Have a flyer, knock on doors, ask questions.

FWIW, you don't need footage of the exact intersection. If there's a camera in any of the several intersections leading up to it, that could be of use.

Yeah or any intersections following soon after as well. Jeff - what was your route ? Were you going west on Gates ? Was Clinton and Gates where did they started revving their engine or where you got hit ? 

I was going south on Clinton.  They were stopped going south as well at Greene.  So I assume they were also at the intersection of Clinton and Lafayette just prior.

After running me down, they paused and turned right on gates to get the hell out of there.  Which means they probably were around the intersections of Gates/Vanderbilt, Venderbilt/Fulton, or Gates/Fulton.  There were three ways they could have gone after turning right onto Gates from Clinton.

Did I hear back from the NYPD?  HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  Good one, Caesar!

Joe looked in the general vicinity for cameras but didn't see much.  However, like you say, retracing their probable route might provide results.  Using the street view on googlemaps, I don't see many businesses though.  The closest thing I could guess would be if they had turn left on Vanderbilt after they turned right on Gates, there's a Coastal gas station on the SE corner that might have a camera.  Again, that only a %33 chance.

Any idea re the make and model of the car?  Sounds like maybe you were peacfully moving toward the light while flutturing through the air rather than scoping out the sweet ground effects being rocked by your auto-assailant, but maybe you saw?

Silver or grey, perhaps two door.  They were too far down the street by the time they stopped for a better look or license #.

Their car will definitely have some damage to the front end.  That almost indestructible Ksyrium worked pretty well as a bumper, absorbing a fair amount of force.

There is one camera on Atlantic looking East.  I can't tell if it's looking at Vanderbilt or Clinton.  I don't know if the DOT keeps a recording of this, but I'm assuming they do.  NY State says they don't, but NYC may.  If they turned on Atlantic at all, the make and model may have been recorded.

I bet the native resolution is much better but that it is dumbed down for the web display.

If there's a chance of pulling anything off these cameras, we need to ask right away--they record over old footage.

Jeff, so sorry to hear this. As someone who put a 50 year old French lady in hospital with his sheer mass just 10 days ago, I too appreciate the damage recklessness can cause. But seriously, I hope you're doing as well as you can.

Btw, I'm guessing streetview is probably a couple of years old. So you never know re shop camera footage. As JP says, the best bet is get a few people to canvas / scope out the area.

Just wanna give another big shoutout to Phil Castaldi.

He contacted me after reading a FB post on my accident, offering some great advice.  He came to my neighborhood for like the 3rd time to help me out and have me fill out papers.  He's charged me nothing for the work he put into my accident last winter and what's sure to be a fair amount of work for this one.

Basically, I had no idea that NY State has a pain & suffering fund for people that are victims of crimes.  He's also helping file all the paperwork for getting the city to cover all the medical expenses.

I can't recommend him enough as a personal injury lawyer.  He's also a super nice guy.

Almost as much as the 6 months where John M started every post with "Me and Vlad from Speedwell...." or that weekend when Canadian Mike raced in our colours and came second and Jules kept mentioning him in every post, in every thread.

So, after picking up the po-po report today at the 88th precinct, I decided to return to the scene of the crime.  I discovered 4 buildings with cameras pointed at the street either near, or DIRECTLY IN FRONT of where I was hit.

The first place, at 404 Clinton, I actually gained access and knocked on the landlord's door.  I asked him if I could take a look at the video and told him how I was hit by a car on the street.  He said "no" and shut the door in my face.  Ahhhhhh, people...

I found the name and number of the owner and called it to ask.  Same guy! He hung up on me.  Nice.

The other addresses are 410 Clinton, 420 Clinton (almost directly in front of where I was hit and most likely to have the actual collision footage), and 464 Clinton, which has a camera pointed down Gates in the direction they turned and might actually capture their license plate.

Although, I'm likely to run into the same responses.  And as Phil told me, all the guy has to say was that he wasn't driving and the car was stolen at the time.  Also, he's probably not very well insured.  Easier to just go the state route.  He'd probably only get leaving the scene of an accident.

This really wouldn't change anything other than potentially seeing an awesome video of my near death!  I'd love to see myself hurtling through the air like a ragdoll.

Anyway, just thought I'd mention it.  I'm not going to hunt down the other 3 address' owners and ask.  But the 420 one (Doooooooooooooode....like....4:20!!!!) might be interesting.

@Owens at a minimum you should include those addresses in your police report.  It shouldn't be *your* job to get the footage.  Frankly that should fall to the police or your attorney.

Yeah, the police don't care and Phil has dealt with these issues so often, he basically said the guy will get nothing except the misdemeanor ticket (if we can even really track down who it is and then even definitively say it was him driving, which is extremely hard). 

I'd just like to see the video!

This is a tricky subject. I don't think that anyone should be able to get away with what happened to Owens. In another world, I could imagine ill-intentioned cyclists taking advantage of liability and creating massive legal headaches. On our bikes, we're too vulnerable. When this happens to people in cars, insurance companies take over. Is there any kind of collision insurance for cyclists? Is that sort of what the NYC pain and suffering fund angle is about? Just thinking out loud here.

As a well-to-do cyclist, it's not about the money for me. And as a personal-responsibility-obsessed Tea Party originalist, I'm a big fan of liability.

so after 4 days off the bike (okay well i rode twice, but so gently that i didn't ever get out of breath or sweat) i am astonished to find that my patellar tendons feel quite tight!  fascinating!
