any chance anybody is going past redbeard this weekend before the race? If anyone could pick up my jersey and bring it to Prospect = yack's would be obliged
Great a refund....how bout a free race??? refund doesn't make me whole...I'm trying to understand why he couldn't just let me in the race??? I'm no threat...nobody would have cared...if these races are as described below...what's the probs? Less the following was another cut & paste snafu: "Our race tomorrow is not the Tour de France. It's not the Olympics. Heck, it's not even a state championship. It's a friendly, local competition event. "
Yacks DNS Dan Reiners moonwalked across the finish line JP mid pack/break didn't stick A plethora of kissena's in the five race all over the place. But quite active!
Sunday races are tough, they throw the whole weekend off.
I started with a sticky note on my Garmin, listing the 3 Fs: Fast, Smart, Fun. Yeah, still working on the name, but I kept it in mind during the race.
I did a warmup and rolled up to the start line just as the 123s got their whistle. There was a serious representation of experience in the 4s, with Jim, Eloy, Dan, Jeff, Niall out for his first race of the season, and David who continues to look strong in the field. I assumed everyone would be riding on the front and so tried to stay there as much as possible.
Someone attacked early and it got shut down after a half lap chase and single file, but it set the mood for the rest of the race, which was faster than the previous one, with slightly higher temps this morning.
A small break of 3 got off the front, including Polka Dots KOM. Once the KOMs were done, we caught the break, of course, but another 4 man break jumped off the front and stayed away and took the W.
With 4 to go, I was on Niall's wheel when he rolled off the front and, looking behind me, yelled to him that we had kind of a break of our own going on. We stayed off the front for about a quarter lap before we were caught, and, with 3 to go, took a lap to recover.
With 1 to go, at the bottom of the downhill, I made my way to the front and figured I would surf wheels until the uphill, when Jim came flying up on my right and yelled for me to get on his wheel. I jumped with him - Jim, as the others did, was looking strong the whole race - and then I yelled a rider was coming up on his right.
He got on Ashley's wheel, and the 3 of us were gunning it passed the temple. I looked down and between my legs to see a 4th wheel on mine and a significant gap opening up. But after 8 laps of being on the front, I let a gap open to Jim's wheel. It grew wider and wider and I was thinking I just needed to push to close it when it was large enough to let that damned headwind in and beat the snot out of me like a leafblower on a New Jersey lawn. Just as I waived off, Jim and Ashley did also. We were swarmed and I tailgunned it onto the back of the Peloton before the uphill, slapping Jim on the back as I went.
From the lead to last place, such are the fortunes of racing. Jim and I tried it and couldn't make it stick. But a hell of a lot better than riding mid-pack and having not a thing to remember. Thanks, Jim, for that Boss effort. I have strength training in my future to make that work next time.
During the race, Jeff took a couple of flyers off the front, Dan threw himself into a heroic effort on the front to chase the break, and we saw Phil along the course. Sorry I missed you after the race. Thierry was working registration - looking forward to riding with you soon.
Also, the trees were in bloom and the whole course smelled nicer than the sweaty men all around me. It was another incentive to stay up front.
I see on FB a picture of me riding next to a Veselka guy. Wow, I really don't like their shamrock Kit, and Kissena continues to have great kit, even while other teams are starting to copy the orange helmet. A solid race, I had a lot of fun, nice to see you guys. I couldn't make the run for coffee, but no better start to a Sunday morning than working with teammates.
We had some good representation in the 5s. Giacomo, Max, Scott, Andreas and me.
Andreas jumped from the gun. A couple joined him and stayed away for while before the group was caught. Fast start, but everyone came together and the pace cooled for a couple of laps.
Scott went to the front and attacked on the second to last lap after the downhill. After he was reeled in Andreas counterattacked and stayed away with another rider until they were caught on the last lap.
Giacomo kept things interesting at the front, with an attack and a couple pulls, trying to set a pace to let Andreas stay away. Max and I tried to stay at the pointy end the whole time.
Everything came together by the bottom of the hill on the last lap. I made it towards the front of the group where everyone was looking around waiting for someone to jump. Someone showed their hand and everyone accelerated. No real gap formed and there was a group finish.
Kissenas were very visible and active the entire race, good stuff.
Jules - a 4 man break stayed away for several laps towards the latter half of the Cat 4 race. At one point, they were about 25 seconds ahead and the main field had a second moto come up front to pace them.
Driven mostly by Rory O'Neill, on polka dots, who is stupid strong, won, and now also leads the green competition, and two points away from the Cat 4 overall.
We did get really close to catching them, specially by the temple in the last two laps, but a super strong headwind and good organization probably helped them.., specially, I think, on the rise by the old finish and on the climb.
Kudos to them.
Jordan, Fulton, and a few others weren't represented, but we never got a solid chase going -- plus frankly, I am not sure Kissena should have brought them back to the field, as we don't really have a top win the race sprinter.
Jeff put up a couple of truly hardcore chase moves in the last two laps, specially last time up the climb, so hard, almost looked like he would either catch or finish fifth.
Jim, Nial, Dan, also looked really strong, we communicated clearly, and were awesome about racing as a team.
I had fun yesterday in the cat 5. I was getting a lil bored with the slowdown pace during the 4th lap and decided to break after the downhill.
I didn't get a sense of how far ahead I got ahead of the group or if the group sped up a bit; I just wanted to see what would happen to me physically and if I would be able to keep up with the pack again. I know I sprinted as hard as I could for ~45 seconds based on the data. Once Andreas passed me though, I was gassed out.
I did hang with the group however, and got back towards the front of the pack as we climbed the hill the final time. However, on the final uphill I was a bit out of steam from the sprint and since I wasn't in the top 10 by that point, I strolled into the finish line.
Next time I'll learn our to balance breaking with full out max sprinting, but that was my favorite part of the race ... live and learn.
