All righty then. I will start preparing the fist of death

I think we can manage this perfectly well race-by-race. I will not be signing up for an L&C race that already has 17 KCCs pre-reg'd (unless it's bizarro world, and I'm in contention for a jersey). I think a lot of folks feel that way.

If I end up in an L&C race with 17 other KCCs, I'll be the first to raise my hand to wear a black jersey (assuming non-bizarro world) and use my inside knowledge of your race tactics to win myself. I think a lot of folks feel that way.

Boom. Problem solved. Back to Brian Boitano and the Yellow Ice Zambonies.
Boitano so chock full of win

Yellow Ice pb Brian Boitano?
Yellow snow. Yellow snow.

Bb and the zambonis appearing at a pp race near you.

Ha. Pp.
Yellow snow

So I'm finally beginning to see some glimmerings of my race-ready self, in time (I hope) for some Prospect Races.  One of my big goals for the season is to be useful in a Cat 3 leadout... so what's the plan?

Do we have all the parts?  Renshaw, sweeper, sprinter...?
God help me if I get sucked into another leadout conversation.

Wait, I'm pretty sure that all the L&C races are 1/2/3 fields, right?

You have no idea how excited I am for you cat 3s to race with us and so, sometime in the not so distant future, you too can share stories about how you were going to bridge to the winning break, but couldn't hold the wheel of that f-ing doper.

Seriously though, if we can get a squad together of 4 to 6 medium to extra-strong cat 3s to join the likes of Partland, Perlberg, Ragot and Ryan on any given Sunday. Hot damn! I don't care how many times he attacks the hill, Duslowski doesn't have a shot in hell of going anywhere without a Kissena glued to his wheel.

And I thought you were counting the days till you can turn the screws on the local peloton.
I am mugs... just more into beating cyclists than dead horses.
I've been known to be stupid enough to contest a sprint... I.e. I would like to give sprinting a shot.
edit...see below.
Marc,
Have you considered that you're being a bit provocative and might want to reign it in a bit?
Kittens...
Eric

"provocative"

"silly and unproductive."

I love how I have so many editors on the forum. Anyone else on the club get this treatment?

How about this re-write:

This is exciting news. Andy Da Silva, a proven sprinter on the road and track, has cautiously dipped his toe in murky waters by expressing interest in sprinting for the big prize. I believe it would be exceptional if we, his teammates, would rally around him and support him in his goals. Goals incidentally, which would be both beneficial to him personally, but as our growth as a team.
@Marc I enjoy your "go hard or go home" fiery rhetoric, don't go changing.
@Marc don't go braiding your Ponytail any different just because the winds are swirling.  Hotlist is unique, and deserves unique treatment - both the mockery and the respect!

Andy, I am eager and serious about helping the 123 squad this year.  If you want to sprint, I'd love to help.

My preference is to help with a dedicated sprint train, since I anticipate we'll have so many strong guys that the scenario where Kissena doesn't make the break and someone has to chase is highly unlikely - especially since Ragot, Perlberg & company love the "bridge up if it's a good looking break" move - and are all strong enough to do it.

I am happy to see someone rallying the troops, whether they have a ponytail or not.  Looking forward to seeing everyone working together on race day.
Ok, relax, and please stop talking about leadouts.

I think it would be best for the newbies to get a few 123 park races under their belts before we get serious about strategy. If it's there and it happens, then great. But let's give them a chance to ease into it and not only learn how other teams race, but learn how their new teammates race.

It took me a while to figure out how JP rolls so that I could help him out in the SS races. I know how Perlberg and Ragot ride. I know where I'm useful and I know where I'm not. Also, I know who the other players in the field are. I know where we need to be. If you haven't raced a bunch of 123 park races you won't. There's a difference and it's big. Understand that. Otherwise you might just fuck it up. Isn't that right Jules?

You can't just automatically gel because you entered a race. These things take time. Talks of leadouts and usefulness are empty when nobody knows what you do. Humility is as important as aggression at this level.
Sorry Vlad-o, I disagree. Sometimes you gotta try and fail.

Trying to be successful in a race isn't aggression, and acquiescing isn't humility.

In my first two Pro123 races, at Branchbrook and Prospect Park, respectively, I got two top tens and earned points that put me into dots for a week. Mainly cuz Eric and Mike were like "go after it." The first race I got dropped from the winning break but still got 5th; the next one that experience helped me to NOT get dropped from the winning break. I learned by failing.

I say if people wanna sprint, lead out, whatever, go for it. Especially someone like Andy, who is a good sprinter. Who cares if doesn't work? As long you ride safely there's nothing to "fuck up."

I go away from the forum for a couple weeks and the annual "Too Many Kissena's in the L&C Cup" discussion comes around. We normally waits until we're actually in the middle of the season for this to flare up. There's F***ing 3 feet of snow on the ground people! I know racing starts in a month but we're going to have to do Grants Tomb on fat bikes if this weather keeps up!

This discussion is ridiculous, we are an awesome club and people recognize that, if we are too successful, and too many people want to be awesome, what are we supposed to do? tell people who want to race they can't? that is BS of the highest order.

We are a racing club, not a "tell people they can't race" club. If we start telling people they can't race then we should just pack up and take up shuffleboard, because we are completely missing the point.

I also think the men-in-black idea is patently silly, it makes it look like we're trying to mask how many people we have. Other teams know who's on Kissena, they see you rolling around town in your KCC kit for every other race, but show up like you're Johnny Cash for an L&C race, it just looks fishy and unsporting, like you're trying to hide something.

The solution is embracing the team and making sure that when riders on other teams voice these concerns we have appropriate responses for them, because it is just a perception issue. People think we're dominating because we have so many people, but there are a handful of people who are racing and supporting a couple specific goals. We don't have a 20 guy leadout for the green jersey, we have 3-4 guys and they turn themselves inside out to make that happen, and that is all they're doing (maybe pulling a few other digs here and there), same with KOM and Yellow jerseys. It may seem like we have an infinite number of bodies to throw at a race, but I have never seen 20 KCCs up at the front ripping the legs off of the field, and until I see that happen I am not worried about Kissena being too dominant.

/rant

PS - nobody is stopping the CRCA teams from working together, Jordan, Waffles and NYVelocity could all get together and put 20 guys into a field if they were willing to work together. In fact CRCA has recommended that their sub-teams work together in non-club races.

PPS - Don't mess with Marc, he wants to do a Cat 123 leadout, and Konrad wants to sprint! GET IT DONE SON!

PPPS - Kissena women, we're happy to have you race in the field. I for one look forward to reminding the first jerk who calls the field girls for not riding hard enough, that his weak attack just got chased down by Erika and Gwynna.
Have we had a successful leadout in a park 123 race in recent history? Can someone name the teams that have? I can. From what I remember, our p123 wins/results have come from breaks.
It's been a long winter on the trainer for everybody, apparently.

Any P123's who want to train for a leadout, my hand is up.

Dan,

I disagree.  This discussion isn't ridiculous, it's important, and it's healthy.  It's isn't a "perception" that we have 16 guys in the field and sweep the green & dots almost every race.  That's reality.

This club has a lot of history of not exposing some of the more contentious problems until after they've blown up; I started the thread so that everyone could share in the thought process - and I think we've all come to the conclusion that any "cure" would be far, far worse than the original problem.

/outie
Yeah, Dan and others saying we are trying to "tell people they can't race" - that's just a mischaracterization of the discussion. Whatever you think about whether we should make an effort to limit our numbers in races, that's an oversimplification.

All anyone has suggested is that we find a way to spread the ample racing that is available around so that our numbers aren't so huge.
May I make the following suggestion?

For L&C races Kissena get $10 off the entry fee, right? How about we scrap that? Instead, for every Kissena who enters, Charlie gets his $25 entry fee or whatever it is and the additional $10 that Kissena used to get as discount is donated to the drug testing fund. So, Kissenas will pay the same as all other teams. This will have the following repercussions;

1) The extra $10 will make the race a certain expense so when people are on the fence they are more likely not to register, taking numbers down a bit to reasonable levels.

2) We as a club will actively, at a certain personal expense, contribute very visibly to anti doping in OUR race.

3) If we still get 47 Cat 4s in the race, at least it will be a massive contribution to local testing. Maybe other teams will then want more Kissenas to race?

4) Everyone gets to wear a Kissena jersey and nobody is barred from racing.

This suggestion should serve to do three things: improve public image, marginally reduce Kissena numbers in races and not veto anyone's participation. If it has no effect, it can be reviewed at the end of Summer and tweaked or abandoned.

The cost? Well, everyone look back to last year. Maybe in the series the serious attendees went to what, 5 or 6 races in this series? So they'll be hit 'hardest'. $60.
Damn @Adam. That's a helluva an idea.
I'm wearing all black. Sneaky Reporter cat burglar style.
@Owens any excuse to pretend you on team Rapha...? :p
No way will I wear overpriced Rapha in a park race! I don't have the special magnets to keep on your number and the crash tastic nature of them isn't conducive to keeping a $300 kit in one piece.

to the 2/3 rider discussion:

a few thoughts....

1) It's really cool that Andy wants to go for the field sprint. We will support him. Duh.

2) I agree with Ryan and Vlad. How is that possible?

Agree with Ryan: learning by doing is key. good, smart aggressive racing can lead to results. Great to grab the bull by the horns and go for it. that's how I get my results.

Agree with Vlad: coordinating a team lead out train is really complicated. It's not just going to happen because we say we want to do it. also, racing in the 123 field is an entirely different beast than the 3s, 3/4s, 4s, and 4/5s. I rocked through the cat 4 field in 6 races and only didn't place in one. My next 10 races in the 123 field were totally fucking terrifying and I got 0 results.

------------------------

My thoughts on the sprint finale.

a) are you leaving a gap to the wheel in front of you? What you considered a small gap in the 4s and 3/4s, are now gulfs that 3 riders will slot into before you know what happened.

b) Can you even get to the front in the last 2 laps? When you do, and someone grabs your jersey or leans their body onto yours, what will you do? When someone puts themselves a 1/2 wheel ahead of you and directs you to the curb, will you panic? When you get to the front and then you get swarmed by 6 guys on each side, how are you going to navigate your train out of it?

c) Can you take a hand off your bars and redirect a rider next to you while flying down the downhill? When all of a sudden, the rider behind (on your team) you has lost your wheel, what will you do?

Anyway, my point is that this stuff is hard. It's cool that we want to do it, but our lack of a lead-out hasn't been for lack of trying. We have so many guys with such a diverse array of experiences and skills that if we want to make it happen, it's going to take a combination of gaining experience and practice.

That's all for tonight.
