Floyd Bennett Field

One of the arguments for local drug testing that we discussed with the Florida folks was that if winners of races like these get tested and come up clean, then pundits like those above have to STFU.

Anyone want to donate to the cause?

Nice job and Brendan great vid....If only I could get a real time feed with two way audio...I could bark directions to all of you.  I miss the mid-week Floyd races.  You don't even have to train...just race, recover for 2 days and race again, all Summer.  Glad to see you all enjoyed some good "clean" fun.  (That was for u Foundation ass clowns)
@Brendan. Thanks for video, you're showing some crazy 5 minute power in there! The only critique I'd have is at 5:13 — and I could be totally wrong — but I don't think you needed to contribute to that bridging move. Cycling tips has some wisdom on this: "If another rider tries to bridge the gap it’s sometimes okay to let him/her go.  If that rider’s team is not already represented in the break-away this isn’t overly threatening (depending on who that rider is and how strong they are).  That rider trying to bridge may just get caught in no-man’s land that then he’ll be recovering for the rest of the race.   If that rider who is trying to bridge to the break-away has a team-mate already in the break-away, it’s probably a bad idea to let that rider get away.   This will mean the team in the break will have a 1-2 advantage and will most likely win if they’re smart about it." Considering at that point there was already Marc and myself up the road, you could reason that CIS wanted in on the break and they had numbers to line up a chase if they decided. You could have either put a tax on them trying to bridge (like you did by tagging along), or let them get a guy up there and then their team will start blocking. The question you want to ask is; is your teammate in the break capable of winning or no? If the answer is no, then hell yes get to that break by any means. Otherwise make the other guys pay a price to get there, or let the other teams chase so you can totally kill it in the last third when they tap out.

Lastly, there's this weird psychology where the bunch chases down a bridging move and when they catch the chasers, sit up, and then guys coming through from the back are all "oh, we caught the break, time to chill". That confusion got CIS the W—did you hear the post-race "I didn't know anyone was away"?

Regardless, it was highly likely we would have been brought back because everyone is super keen to chase that early on in the piece—food for thought. Congrats on 7th, you'll have a W in no time.

thanks, john.  one of the reasons i post the videos is in hope that the team's more experienced riders will impart their wisdom.  or even the less experienced ones might have insight.  also i'm just a big nerd playing with my new gopro nerd toy.

i have some questions for you that i forgot to ask.
  • i think that at around 40:00 you tell me to get on the front, then i follow alyosha, and clumsily sort of set up next to him/david lipscomb for a bit in the wind.  then pull in front, eat a lot of wind, and nearly die (watch the whole field swamp me on the next straight).  obviously i managed my effort wrong.  but i was wondering (a) what you meant when you said 'get on the front'--does this mean attack, or just get up front in anticipation of blocking for a teammate attack? (b) if you meant attack, why? why was that time a good one (when you first told me i thought it was a sprint preme but now looking back i see that it wasn't). did you want to begin an effort to bridge to the TT'ist? (who i didn't know was out there, if he was at that point)
  • when did the time-trialist get away?
  • when do you get out of the saddle to sprint for that line at floyd?  i didn't realize the finish was so close to that final turn, and (judging by side-to-side wobble of camera and my recollection; witness accounts may disprove me) i don't think i got out of the saddle at all because i thought it was further away and, by the time i saw it, i was too close to it for the out of saddle effort to make a difference (the guys in front of me were crossing the line). recall that the other week in the 5s race, i sprinted past the real finish line to my imaginary finish line.  i seem to have issues with this floyd finish line thing.
non-questions:
  • 42:21 the guy who i'd brushed arms with twice, and who yelled at me for it twice, nearly blows snots on me. i wonder if he was doing it vindictively?  i apologized to him after the race.  even though i don't think i did anything egregiously wrong.  the contact was not a push.  maybe next time i'll just give a little whisper to announce my presence.  a sweet nothing.  both times, he was moving backwards in the field and i wasn't...
  • 51:05 - all the experienced riders (green and yellow jersey) suddenly find themselves on the front going into the final two turns and WHAT DO YOU KNOW, their shoes suddenly BOTH require adjusting! ;)
@mugwump you might consider using some moments from these videos, not necessarily this one, as a resource in a noob lecture. sometimes a concrete visual example ("don't do what this video shows this guy doing.") helps bring a strange new idea (where should i position myself? when should i attack? what is eating wind? if a tree falls in the forest...) down to earth.  although then you'd need a TV.  nevermind.  pre-coffee thought.

@ Brendan
I can't get video to work but:
- 40:00 I think I wanted help chasing the break (CIS were blocking)
- TT got away with two to go. I think his break mates blew up, so people thought they'd brought it back. If you can't see race car, someone is up the road!
- I sprinted out of the seat from the corner 53x14
- definitely be chatty if someone next to you is sketchy, has overlap or you're passing underneath. No need to apologize for bumping if you're holding a good line.
- 51:05 That's called phoning in the sprint. You crank down the straps to get better power transfer. If you see someone doing that it can be the perfect time to sneak attack them.

this is so obvious, but i never thought about it before. genius.  you just ensured i'll never again not know that there is a breakaway up the field.

i would've tried to chase if i'd realized someone was up ahead that whole time. i also did not realize CiS were blocking. now i feel stupid.

good to now that you just sprint from the corner.  i need to work on timing
Here you go Brendan:

I assumed you knew, which wasn't good comm's on my part!

Always a good idea to measure out your sprint pre-race, to know from which fence post on the side of the road you can go from.
Anyone heading to FBF today?
i was thinking about it, but balancing the idea with turning up to drinks late and sweaty.
I would like to, but the weather is looking very ominous. Going to make a game-time decision. Will post here if I end up going.

Beer & Q...

(Just sayin)
Weather looks like it's going to hold up, so I'm gonna race. 6:00 GAP. Bringing clothes and a lock for Dinosaur BBQ after.
it's time for our weekly amateur meteorological chat.  it's looking ominous.

Though it's only 60% chance of precip, there are also a flash coastal flood warning...

Yang's chances of racing today: 0%

What is the deal with this rain?

this is getting ridiculous. every tuesday
Will I be standing by my front door this evening, all kitted up, my bicycle looking up at me with those big puppy eyes while rain pours down outside?  My Magic 8-Ball App says maybe. . .
That means an indoor session of 30 minutes and 3 bottles of water.
charlie just posted that tonight's race is on.  as of now.
I think I'm out for tonight's race..  and of course I see the sun peeking out..  ugh!
i'll be there unless it's cancelled.  GAP at 5:45?
brendan -- see you at GAP at 5:45.
Balls.
I am on the fence on this...I want to race. I don't want to spend my evening splashing through coastal flooding, straddling a metal contraption in an open field with a 60% chance of thunderstorms. Sounds like a recipe for getting your junk seared.

phillip / jules / dan / yang: HTFU.
@Mark

hmmmm, Rule 5 or charred junk. Still on the fence.
^ that is a fair exception.
See also Rule 9 (available at http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/).

also, when did seared junk fall out of favor?
