The Annual Super Bowl Century

Invited!

I ended up inviting the usual suspects for look sharp to make life a bit easier
Sorry Matt I can't make it tomorrow since my legs are fried from riding 100km today on Zwift mostly at tempo.
I’ll try and join tomorrow
I sadly only got in 80 miles today and not a full century, but realized when I got home this was most likely the longest solo ride I've ever done. Every other long ride I've done with at least one other person.

I sorely, sorely missed having a draft.

Took route 25a most of the way except the last 5 mile stretch or so when I missed a turn and went down route 25.

Saw 2 other cyclists on the road at Cold Springs heading east as I was heading back home west. Very grimy, salty, wet. Phone kept crashing so was only able to take 2 photos.

Knew I had to turn back at mile 40 to make it home for lunch. Bonked hard just around mile 55. Head wind picked up and made going home worse. Stopped very often, ate and drank everything except 1 stroopwafel and 1 Clif block.

Key stats:

1. Kit - ChamSys KCC fleeced bib shorts, fleeced leg warmers, darkside long sleeve jersey, 'new style' winter jacket, wind block winter gloves, fleeced full shoe covers; Uniqlo undie, heattech long sleeved undershirt, thin merino sweater; Rapha merino neck gaiter; Giro winter cap with ear flaps

2. Food+Drink = 5 stroopwafels, 1 rice krispie treat, 1 Honest Kids apple juice box, 2 goldfish snack packs, Clif blocks, 24oz bottle + 20oz bottle

3. CAAD10, Hed Jet4, double spare kit, Evo brass bell, Cygolite 250lum front light, 2 superflash rear red lights

4. Forgot - HRM, mini pump, wallet, cash

The few photos I was able to take before phone crashed:

At mile 40, fueling up before turning around to head home, crushing an Honest Kids apple juice box, LIKE A BEAST.

Eating one of my Goldfish cracker snack packs at Cold Springs Harbor at mile 61, hiding my sobbing face behind the bag.

Glad I did the ride, but that isn't something I'd like to repeat any time soon.

I can not wait to ride with friends again.

Not very adventurous but did 100k this morning on Zwift. Watched a bad Mark Wahlberg movie and kept to the low roads. Crushed nothing.

I thought it would be funny to do a long ride in Prospect Park. I too didn't end up making it 100 miles due to time constraints and, frankly, desire but I did roll 19 laps or so laps. It was like Zwift but with natural wind.

It was definitely quicker than 104km over the bridge because I didn't stop at all. I also just ticked off the laps on my Wahoo and that made it way easier on my psyche than counting miles or minutes. Really the most dramatic thing that happened was I dropped a clif bar on lap 10 and rather than stop and turn around, I just picked it up on the next lap lol. I'm happy I did it and will probably not do it again!

For some reason I only took these two pictures but maybe that's fitting for a purposefully bland ride 🤷‍♂️

After my usual Saturday long Zwift ride yesterday, it dawned on me that I’d be in the mix if I’d done a flat course instead of the Alpe. I didn’t do 100k, but I did get 4,500 feet of elevation. Does that count? 😅
Knowing the snow was coming, I decided to do the Super Bowl Century on SATURDAY!!!!

Got the hall pass.  Felt giddy as a schoolkid who found out about a snow day after waking up.  That made the early miles easy.

Some of the worst conditions I encountered were here in the city, thanks to people unburying their cars by dumping the snow on the road.

Saw some vultures in a dumpster behind the steakhouse in Sparkill.  Hoped it wasn't an omen.

Tried to add a few miles to the opening half on the concern that Perkins wouldn't be plowed.

Went to the Orchard, then Letchworth village to Gate Hill.  The climb into Harriman was clear.  But the descent to Seven Lakes had snow on the road.  Seven Lakes was clear.

The gate to Perkins was closed, but it looked plowed.  I figured I'd climb until I hit snow.  Then I did, about a mile in. Stupidly, I decided to ride it until it got worse.  That was maybe a km.  then it cleared.

Shortest-ever stop at the Cove Deli (according to strava, I set a PR for the segment by the deli, .44mi, only 9:32!)

Haverstraw was empty.

Caught and passed a guy at 9w/202.  He drafted me until the Rockland Lake climb, where he attacked me.  I had mixed feelings; wanted to attack back, but knew how long I had been out and how far to go. I let him slowly pull away.  Maybe it was all I had.

Clothing--I overdressed!!  Was expecting a high of 40.  I think even atop Bear it was higher than that.  Took my gloves off for every long hill and kept them off on every ensuing descent.

Eats--2 Stroopwafels (from the Costco bulk box; lets get this company as a sponsor!), 2 Clif bars, 2 Clif ropes, 2 Reeses peanut butter cups, 2 bottles of SIS mix, 1 Gatorade, 1 Melon Madness Mountain Dew.

Beth leaned on me to bring my phone, so I have pictures.  Not eloy quality, but I'm training.

Vultures!

Lake Tiorati

The scale is bizarre (actual size all around)

Road Closed. We don't need no stinkin' gates

Well, maybe we do.

Obligatory Tower Shot.

No Polar Bear Plunge on this day.

The return to the island, just before sunset

102.3 miles all told.

JP you're my freaking hero.
A few of us set out in the French country side. We rolled, we chatted, we put some digs in and hard efforts.

Wasn’t the same as rolling in a big bunch and stopping at the cove deli but it was great to have company.

I wanted "elevation" today, so chose the four horsemen loop plus enough miles to make a metric century. had today's CX races on for company, but it wasn't the same as real group riding.

MVDP passed me on the way up alp du zwift i kid you not.

Wanted to join Matt and Rich, et. al. in the fake French countryside but lost track of time making bagels instead. Ended up with the flattest fake metric century possible on the desert flats

More important bagel pics:

Awesome guys I however struggled for 3 hours with two sets of tubeless set up

@mugwump , ride phots ? So awesome ,always love your ride reports ,now in color
Bagels look amazing, and while that route is totally flat 100km on a trainer still totally counts. I only managed 80some kms, was fun to join the crew, kudos to every one that hit 100 km or longer this weekend, wether you did it outside or on the trainer! full awesome.
(also today's cx women's race was fireh, was so rooting for Sanne)
Joined Matt & Co for a Zwift ride, but my butt wouldn't tolerate more than 2 hours (or 40 miles) on a trainer. So no metric century for me. I am impressed with all the good Super Bowl rides (and vibes) out there.

Kudos to you all - and am especially jealous of JP, Yang and others who put in huge rides on Saturday.

If someone had ridden outside today they'd earn the legendary status of Andy Hampsten on the Gavia. I took the following while in my car this afternoon:

Took advantage of the nice weather on Saturday to ride to Nyack for a coffee & donut! As JP mentioned, the road conditions in the city were pretty bad (and I got soaked crossing through the salt water puddles on the GWB path), but everything was much drier on the other side. Enjoyed a vanilla glazed from Boxer (with no line out front!), got back to the city as the sun was beginning to set, and looped around a few blocks at the end to complete the metric.

Hope to do the full group century next year!
All of this is so rad
I went on Zwift yesterday by joining a group ride organized by some cycling club from Ottawa. The tone from the leaders was quite formal, and it seems that they did not engage with outsiders (from what I found after participating for the second time). Otherwise, I kept the pace mostly at tempo and got my prescribed dose of TSS.

Y'all inspired me to get out on the bike as I'd only done indoor 45 min trainer rides a couple times a week, and the occasional outdoor ride,  for the past 3 months or so.  And naturally as I prepared my bike for outdoor use, I'd misplaced my Garmin although I  had prepared a RwGPS file.  Having no data and just enjoying the day was actually quite refreshing.  I rode at the pace I wanted.  Since Covid I've only ridden solo and Saturday was a great day.  No wind, mid-50's to 60's all day and all-day sun.

I will say by mile 40 it was still fun and at mile 45 I enjoyed a clam chowder at Marshall Store.  At mile 65, I was starting to slog but the green hills and light traffic kept it fun.

By the time I got home I had no energy to do a couple laps in the park to make the hundo but I'm quite alright w/ 96 miles.

Legs are still pretty wrecked but stoked to have done it!

This is all amazing. Feeling super inspired!

Once I get the AI Algorithm we spent 8 million dollars creating to randomly select someone from the list of 100s, we will announce the winner! If you rode a bunch last weekend and haven't shared about it, you've still got some time! Let's say Friday morning?
Okay, so I apologize for the delay.
For transparency purposes, attached is the official, ratified recording of the drawing of names. The winner earned a ~free tech jersey~ from Champ Sys.
CONGRATS to JP! Riding the full 100 miles is not only impressive but it mathematically increased your odds of winning a sweet tech jersey.
Someone from the club will be in touch to get it to you!

Thanks again to everyone for participating! It was beautiful to see everyone getting out and about “together”. Be on the lookout for more group events soon.
That man is the ultimate King of KCC raffles.
KO...R?
That man is the ultimate King of KCC raffles.
It's weird, for sure.

Ok. Ok.

So it's been hard to get out and ride for the last little bit.

It's over freezing today.  I'd be in Central Park now if it weren't for my daughter celebrating Chinese New Year at home.  It was pretty clear-looking when I walked by the drives yesterday.

So long as the predicted precipitation doesn't freeze on Thurs/Fri, I think I/we can do the Annual Super Bowl Sunday Century.

Anyone (else) foolish enough to come with?
I think you’re a week early @mugwump. Super bowl is the 13th

Thanks!

I've totally lost track of football.  The Super Bowl used to be the week after CX Worlds, I think.

Regardless, it seems to now be a week later than it was in recent years past.  Probably because of the new 17-game schedule.

Guess I'll be there the following Sunday.  As for this Sunday, I should be out for a ride as well.
I think they added an extra week of games to the regular season this year.  Idk, I don't follow football too closely.

Either way, I should be there next week.
I intend to be there for the Annual Super Bowl ride.

For those who haven't done it before, scroll back up to 2020 and earlier rides for info. It's a crazy long ride to be doing at this point in the season and requires more thought and  preparation than just riding to Piermont.

Typically, we ride to Bear mountain, climb to the top of Perkins Drive and return home.

Each rider MUST have spare tubes, CO2 or mimipumps, extra food and hydration, and layers appropriate for the weather. Make sure your bike is in proper working condition this week. Don't prep it the night before as you don't want a mechanical to ruin your ride. Ride heavy duty training tires. Not thin racing tires. Check your brakes and gears. Being prepared will go a long way to making sure we don't have to stand around in sweaty gear during the winter and makes the ride more enjoyable. The group will stop on the way back for hydration and food.

We will stay together as a group, however, if you have bitten off more than you can chew, and this ride is more taxing than your current fitness allows, there is no shame in letting the group know and finding a suitable turnaround point. Better to put in a good 60 mile ride than bonk hard at 80 with 20 miles to go before you get home. The ride from Brooklyn is even longer and riders have sometimes taken the subway back after reaching Manhattan.

Here is the 2019 route to upload to your Wahoo/Garmin:
