seemed to have changed desktop look at the very least.
I am working on making things a bit more clean and up to date. There are a couple of things on the forum that do not work as expected such as messaging, notifications, options, etc. because we are on a custom layout and it has not been updated in several years
The forum is a ten speed with rim brakes and clinchers…  :D
Hey All! Just to update everyone, today I am planning on making the second round of updates which will be more interface focused. There may be some navigation links, etc. that may go away but we will gain a lot of functionality like a correctly functioning notifications and messages along with fixing broken links and images. Please feel free to drop messages here if you see anything you think we're missing and would like back, or slack me and let me know. I'll work on refining things based on feedback. Thanks for your patience!
pre change, when i visited this forum, i'd see not only a list of categorie pn the screen, but several of the most recent threads in each category as well.  Is the a way for me to recreate that?

thanks.
On the home page after logging in, you should see each category and about 5 of the most recent threads within. You will see a small “[NEW]” badge on the threads in each category that are new instead of the threading being highlighted like previously. I’m going to look into if we can change that. Let me know if this helps!
Awesome work @StephenAschkenes!  The layout looks great!

It looks like the preview text for each thread on the main page previews the first post in the thread.  Would it make more sense to preview the oldest unread post?  Idk if that's even possible backend-wise.
Thanks @GregHoge - Yea thats another one that I am trying to figure out
(no preview is good, as it makes the home page easier to scan)
Two things:
1 bolding on unread threads seems much harder to notice/detect now
2 how can I see a list of threads that is not broken down by category?
1) The bold was apparently always there and that’s the default along with the [NEW] badge on unread threads. Still trying to figure out how to change those settings
2) I had removed that page because I didn’t think anyone used it but I’ll bring it back! Do you have a preference how they’re sorted ?
The bold is good - I'd just like it to be BOLDER or perhaps color the little "new" tag. As it is I can barely see the difference.

As for order, the old format gave the user a listed by recency without category view that was useful.

Looking at my notification settings there appears to be a "wall" that people can write on? God help us all. PLS for the love of all that is holy kill that with fire.
I should have begun with a THANK YOU!!!

Care & feeding of the forum is a largely thankless task, and more of a PITA than most imagine.
Haha yea of course - happy to help!

  1. Yea the New badge and boldness for unread posts is a custom CSS so thats a bigger project which I may not even have the skill for but I'll investigate when I have more time.
  2. The 'Wall' is the large text box on your user profile. I think it was actually there previously as well. I don't think I can disable it on its own without eliminating user profiles or doing custom html work but doubt anyone will use it anyways.
  3. I've added the discussions page back in as well!
  4. For the "New Badge", do we like option A or B below? It changes the order and text vs. icons for the discussion stats. For some reason they're apart of the same setting but having it at the end may make it easier to read
A.
B.
I agree. Option A is easier to read.
2 updates:
  1. I merged "Social Events" and "Board" categories into "Announcements & Info" to simplify navigation. I cleaned up tags as well and will do some more work there to tag as many discussions as possible with clear overarching themes such as "Time Trial", "KCC Board", "Travel" to help with identification/navigation
  2. I updated the Font the site uses - its virtually the same but boldness is a bit more visible
I think we used to be able to post polls, but perhaps not inside a discussion thread. I think B is slightly easier to read...?

Thank you for resurrecting the "discussions" page. I think there used to be a setting for how many threads would show for each page. Used to be higher (100?) maybe? Nobody likes paging forward.
Also - does *anyone* use the "best of?"

Yea I think it has to be in its own discussion thread though and didn't want to make a whole new thread for it lol

I'll check if I can change this

I wanted to turn it on to try but I'm not a huge fan of the sorting algorithm; I do like the idea of having a page where I can see updates from multiple threads.  As an alternative, I was thinking of making a page like this if anyone has an opinion. I could create a couple panels with recent discussions, top discussions, top comments, etc.

I am here for it - lets boogie

opinion against the "top" or "featured categories" option - because then this starts to feel like just another social media platform. this would also be pretty static since we're not a huge group of users, and it pushes the discussions further down.

when we want to post it's super easy to do a quick search and post to the relevant thread. which would then pop up as a new post in recent discussions, correct?

only interested in recent/new discussions seen quickly and clearly.
often i'm checking as i'm on the way to meet a group ride in case those slack holdouts (you know who you are :) have last minute ride updates.
I like the Recent Discussions category.  I get it's a duplication of the other areas of the forum, but I like only checking 1 place for recent posts.
I think recent discussions is much more useful as well.
One thing to keep in mind; whatever you do, keep it as simple as possible. If experience is any guide, it'll be ten years before someone looks at this stuff again  :D
