White Plains Downtown Criterium

This is an awesome crit! In my opinion on par with Somerville and Harlem (and Thater). I'll try to come out to spectate.
I wish I could do it again.  Great crit.  scroll up to read the race reports from last year.  skill and fitness really matter here.
Im in for this.....birthday weekend, never know!
i just signed up.
Reg'd for the 4 and the 3/4 race. Nice that there's a race in between so I don't have to go back to back. Also nice that the second race was only $17.50.
In for the 4s.

Hey, those of you who have done this race before...what's the train/commuter situation? Is this race "train-able" or am I going to have to rent a car?
I think JP rode out there last year.
WDC trained, I think.

I'm pretty sure there is a metro north less than 1/2 a mile from the start / finish.

White Plains! Are you kidding? You can certainly hop a train from the 125th St. station and get there faster than a car in the beastly Saturday traffic.
Marc et al,
I rode out and took the train back last year.  My family came out to meet me.

The ride was about 18 miles from harlem.  I just did the standard ride out to the Gimbels ride and then figured out where to make a right.

Metro-North is the way back.  It's probably less than half a mile from the course.

While White Plains is pretty much empty at that time on a Sunday, the course pases by some eateries that are open.

is anyone driving?  early sunday morning train schedule means i'd need to leave my house at 4:30 am to get there for the 7 am start.  gross
I'm in
I rode out last year and it was such a nice ride I've done it a couple of times since_but_do_not_take the putnam trail through the park as shown... its a dirt trail over railroad ties. Nasty.
google maps indicates an alternate route around van courtland park, and this is what I did/do from BB

JP took a different route, not sure what. If you want to cut down on distance to the race you can also take the A train or 1 train to the top of manhattan.
There are only 3 spots left in the cat 5 race. I'm signed up for it.

I might be able to give a fellow cat 5 a ride if they can meet me in my neighborhood ie Greenpoint Williamsburg or if i can pick them up nearby
I have 2 spots in my car. Am doing the 3/4 race. Message me directly.
i'm in as well. just dont know if i'm doing 1 or 2 races. maybe i'll save my eggs for the 3/4 race.
I'm in and driving up for the 3/4 race. I've got spots if anyone needs a lift.
I'm reg'd for the 4 race and the 3/4 race. I was planning to drive and have some spots available too.

Stokes, Alyoshas, Manhattan unite!

Are you guys riding out to the race tomorrow? Want to try to coordinate a "group ride" out there?

P.S. I understand the temptation to "double up" on crits because, well, it's often physically possible. And it seems like, "only 40 minutes? of course I'm going to do two of those!" And many will claim the first race really "opens up" their legs for the second.

But, in general, I feel like, if you are doing it right...getting in a proper PRE RACE warm-up, racing smart and hard during your race, you should be mostly empty after one good crit and the mere thought of doing another race just made your legs wince in pain.

I think the danger of going into a race day with 2 races on your mind, is that you end up sort of getting in two sort of mediocre races. You know, that first race, maybe when the going gets tough, you kind of hunker down and hide or drift to the back and you tell yourself, "this is okay, I've got another race coming up where I'm going to KILL IT!" Then you get to that second race and your mind may be fresh, but your legs are a little tenderoni and you can't really execute the way you dreamed about.

Again, this is not a point I'm going belabor too much (unlike getting in good warm-ups and paying attention to your starts...those points I will hound you to the point of insanity if you continue to be lazy about them), because plenty of folks can and like to do two crits and they get exactly what they want out of that routine, but I just want you to be cognizant of the pros and cons of that choice.
Todd Stodolski from Undici need a ride if anyone is feeling social.

Second from the left; they helped us with the Moser gig last year... he's a trackie.

sure I wouldn't mind riding up there...let me know.
If it come down to a sprint... who in the cat 4. field should we be worried about?

I'd be worried about a dude named Da Silva...I hear he's a monster...

I'm working on trying to figure out the best route now...I'll let you know when I know...keep an eye on this thread. Paging Dr. Stokes, paging Dr. Stokes, with your clean drive train and new bar tape, how are you getting to the races?

Okay, I printed out some ungodly Google maps directions that include 51 diff't steps...they say 2 hours and 4 minutes from my place.

Which means to get to the 9:45am start with enough time to register/pin numbers/etc. That's a 6:45am departure. Ugh. That's going to be too early for me I think to realistically get going. My start is at noon. So, I think maybe you should try and go with Stokes, or take the train, or print out the same directions I did, unless you have a GPS then that should make life easier. It's going to be comical me stopping every two blocks to check my paper directions...grrr...

Anyway, sorry for attempting to rally the troops and backing out last minute. You may call me Dieter Drake this weekend. Hey-ho! (unnecessary cross thread slam in the hiz-ouse!)
I think it's pretty easy to get up there.

Cross the Harlem river on Macombs Dam Bridge.  Once over, turn left onto Jerome Avenue.

Ride Jerome all the way to the end.  This puts you onto a frontage road next to the Major Deegan Expressway.

Take that to the Cross County Shopping Center.

Once past that look for signs for either Central Ave or Route 100.  This is the same road.

Take Central AVe to Tarrytown road/Route 119.  Make Right on Tarrytown.

Tarrytown becomes Main Street in White Plains.

Turn right on Mamaroneck Ave.  Ride one block and you're at the course.
