Cyclocross!

Have you not seen my armchair quarterback union membership card?  It covers all manner of sporting endeavors including for basketball, eating contests, and of course cyclocross racing.
Eloy, despite your usually convincing proselytizing about cyclocross this is not everything I want cycling to be.
That is because you are WRONG. Wrongy McWrongerson.

Also, that guy fell out of his shoe. Think about that for a second.
OMG I didn't even notice the shoe part!! all sorts of amazing!
-- and yes, early season beginner categories, forever amazing.
Ok guys, I'm ready to crush it this weekend! Practice for anyone on weds night or Thursday am?
Thursday. 6:30am, Prospect Park. You better know where.

Like last week. I'll bring cones and barriers, you bring your cyclocross bike.

We'll practice skills and drills, and will specially focus on going thru barriers
fast.

See you then.
I'm looking for advice on how best to complete the TrainingPeaks cyclcocross workouts, such as tomorrow's, that call for a 30 minute run on grass immediately following the bike workout. Do you bring a small bike lock and sneakers along for the ride? Or go home first to put away the bike and change clothes before running? Where are the good spots in PP for a grassy cyclocross run? What's worked for those of y'all who've done these before?
Watch out! Alice bought a cx bike!!!

Whatever works. Keep it simple

-- I usually head home, change into running shorts and shoes, and then head out again for a run.

If locking the bike and running is better or easier for you, then do that. Just make sure bike is truly safe.

Do your best to run some sections on grass, but don't worry much. Just get a good focused run in.

Ha, I sure did! Looking forward to the dusty playtimes and collecting a few bruises :-)

Big thanks to Jill, you need to name your finders fee! Big thanks to Jeff A for parting with his lovely bike.

So how come the US women managed to be competitive at cross Vegas , yet the men were not ? Thoughts?

Not sure I have any answers, but what a great question.

This, btw, is true of all cycling disciplines, in the world's stage, American women are infinitely and dramatically more competitive than the men.

Here's some speculation on my part:

Generally, for cyclocross, the racing infrastructure in the US is much more supportive of women than in Europe.
  • Since ever, if you held a race in the US, you had women fields/categories, not true in Europe -- Worlds women only started in 2000, U23 women only started last year(!!)
  • Equal pay has been pushed by American promoters
  • Cleaner fields
  • Katie Compton, Kate Nash, Caroline Mani, all world class athletes that live and race in the US. Also, Helen Wyman, because of American sponsors, races here. All of them pushing everyone else.
  • As, ultimately, there is no real fame or money, Women race mostly for glory and sport -- think about how unadulterated that is. These are the true athletes.
  • Hyde and Powers need to get the fuck out of their own heads. OMG.
The past three seasons, and specially last season, CX women have been the races to watch.

I take comfort in knowing that in the world's stage, Hyde and Powers are about as good as I am racing masters ;)
There was cross practice visited by a juvenile red tailed hawk who almost got herself a squirrel snack, or may have been attracted to Eloy's brakes screaming like the tortured souls of 1000 squirrels.

CX practice hawke. #onebigassbird
Conversation I had with my dad tonight:

Me: [I mention cyclocross] - "have you heard of it?"

Dad: "oh yeah! I've seen cyclocross."

Me: "Uh really?? Do elaborate"

Dad: "It's like the crazy shit you see guys do on dirt bikes but they're on bicycles, but not regular bicycles."

el gran phil, happening in CT

Fun times at Veteran's Memorial CX in CT.

Is anyone heading to KMC Friday eve with a spare spot in the car?
