race report: i need to learn how to turn and also need more fitness and also more killer instinct

yacks and max going strong with the Kissena Volvo subteam
Cyclocross coming up this week.

Charm City

Best race. Hands down. Biggest race in the US this weekend. Probably the best heckling in the whole world. 2nd stop of the USCup of CX. No longer part of the MAC + no flyover this year.

A bunch of Kissena will be here this year. The top riders of the country of all categories will be here, and so should you.

Caffeinated Cross

If not in Charm City, this is where New Yorkers are likely to race. Never done it, but sure sounds like a ton of fun.

Emmaus Cyclocross Festival

A shame this is the same Saturday that so many other races. In the famed Fifth Street practice course -- I've raced here in previous seasons, pretty sweet setup. This race is everything a good local race should be. Closest race to NYC.

Fun times at Hippo. Good seeing the morning crew. Sorry I missed the Volvo crew - had to leave early.

I raced my first 50+ race and because I signed up late had a terrible starting position which was a problem at Hippo given the congested start. I started passing people in the single track sections but soon discovered the peril of taking alternative lines on a farm. I flatted my rear tubular several minutes away from the pits. Damn.

I felt like everyone must have passed me as I tried my best to ride on a flat. Finally got on my pit bike and clawed back time to finish 20th. Maybe it was that I was passing so many racers without feeling like I was going to hurl, but I felt like my CX form has been coming around. The fact that lap times dropped every lap for me seems to support this. Charm City here I come.

One last thing. After getting home I found a 5mm cut in my rear tubular. I had two year old sealant in it that didn't do very much. I put in some new sealant and it seems to be holding - for now. I am going to test it out this week and cross (no pun intended) my fingers. Incomprehensibly, RedBeard tells me that Clement says they are out of PDX tubulars until December! Don't make me change my favorite tire!

Got a couple of pics of the early morning crew:

Sounds like it's time to go tubeless, patrick!  ;)

Clements are tubeless.....
he said his was tubular?  most manufacturers make tubed, tubular, and tubeless versions of many of their tires

i was mostly joking, not much you can do about a mid-race flat, but tubeless would've allowed him pre-race to to peel tire off rim and check sealant level whereas tubular does not
Is peeling a tire off pre-race to check sealant level a thing? Anyway, tubeless has far to few fumes involved. I wouldn't want to be that guy who picked the wrong autumn to quit sniffing mastic.....

Anyway, I was referring to the fact that Clement's tubular tires don't actually have tubes in them (unlike most tubular tires).
Crossers,
I'm having a Fight Club kind of problem with the NYC CX Facebook page.  Could someone invite me onto it?
Hippocross was solid - my best finish since 2015.  Race predictor had me at 22nd, and I crossed the line 14th having lost a place in the last few turns....

The Cat 3 field was chill at the start. No one was too aggressive into the first, hard right hander.  After descending the first half of the lap, the field was single file and somewhat strung out.  I was sitting around 20th at this point.  I made passes on the uphill in the first two laps.  At mid-race, I was sitting just outside top 10.

The bumpy course and lack of training got to me in the last couple laps.  My exhausted legs and lungs had me on damage control.  A couple passed me, including the dagger at the very end.  However, I held off his partner in crime, forcing him to finish 15th just 1 second behind me.

Charm City 2/3 field is waitlisted :(  So I am putting out a very last minute ask.  If anyone is going to Caffeinated Cross and has space, please let me know!  I am good for gas and tolls.  I am willing to rent a car and pick you up if you are interested.  Otherwise, it will be a weekend to tune the machinery and jump on the road bike.

Ride on,
Anthony

Tess at CX practice tonight, successfully bunny hopping a couple hurdles, letting me know she "did it". She looks great in her complementary kit. Just in time for CX! Saw Brandon tonight, as well as Phil and Phil!

Much better temps tonight for cx, last week was quite the sweatfest.
The drone footage from Hippo is awesome:

So in the mess of Jewish holidays that has been keeping me from my bike this month, I am “enjoying” some “quality” time with my family in westchester. Luckily, my trusty stead is here with me and ready to hit some trails. Anyone know of anything good around here? Particularly around Harrison, White Plains proximity. Thanks!

Tess' first CX race was today at Caffeinated.

CAFFEINATED CROSS RACE REPORT:::::
Today I competed in my first cyclocross race ever. It all started last weekend when I accompanied the boys to Hippocross. I rode around the course on Greg’s brand new Parlee and the entire time I was laughing. So that afternoon on the car ride home, Brendan mentioned that he was selling his cx bike and I freaked! I had to get in on it. I bought Brendan’s cannondale cx bike and it was game on. hit cx practice wednesday and was good to go.
drove down this morning / no idea what to expect. felt weird but totally hyped. arrived 35 minutes before race start. registered on-site and pre-rode 1/2 the course. holy cow it was nuts. so many technical aspects that I never encountered: logs, steps, a crazy 10 foot vertical wall/ramp? fell over a couple of times. felt a lil defeated when I test rode the stairs. didn't know what to do but unclip and run. nearby was an encampment of bikers in a pickup truck and a cooler full of beer, they showed me what's up: stay tight into the turn keep that momentum,  go right avoid the sand patch and charge up the steps on the right side.

before i could get the hang of it, announcement was called! ::5 minutes to ladies start:: so I had to boogie across the course and get to start. didn’t know what the other half of true course looked like!!! Gunned it underneath tons of tape and zigzagged between the 4H barns and made it to the line a minute before the whistle.
I was at the back of the pack and rushing the hill. Greg was right there, “gun it down the left! Pass them! This is your chance to move up!” But I was afraid of breaking into the pack and causing an accident. in hindsight, I should have listened.
my first lap was mid pack. It was grouped together pretty tight and moving really slow. Girls all over the place, not holding lines, blocking.  Going into the woods still toe to toe. Things didn’t spread  out until the second lap, the leaders were way off the front at this point. So I dug in and just picked riders off one by one. I could handle the turns and climbs, it was the obstacles that held me back. I was racing in my spd-sls and it was so difficult trying to clip back in after running over each barrier. I would get over it and be trying to mount on some gravel and/or downhill! Totally new to me and these shoes and clips were impossible, I was slipping and over correcting like crazy. but it was pure delight. All of the adrenaline and endorphins! I clawed my way up and passed 5 or 6 or 10 girls. Still don’t know where I finished. My friend Roz on team Deluxe won the women’s cat 4!!!
learned a lot for next race I now have some tactics to employ. Move up early on the start! or just pre reg lol. and get some mountain bike clips. In cross you’re just on fire the entire time! 40 minutes of extreme cardio and strength. Have no fear. I am hooked on cross guys. Today I had the most fun I’ve ever had on a bike. Big thanks to Greg and Brendan! I’ll see you guys next weekend at Cooper River.

Road pedals??
yea, we didn't get to redbeard last night. sort of a last minute thing. we'll have mtb pedals for the next race.
I'm Mc Lovin the food trailer

Awesome, Tess, congrats! Cyclocross is everything you want cycling to be.

A season or two ago I wrote about what to do before a race, a pre race primer:

Cyclocross coming up.

Gloucester Gran Prix.

New England Worlds. This is the biggest and maybe best cyclocross race in the United States. End of story. A few Kissenas will be here. Very super long drive, but awesome once you get there. Lobster rolls forever. Chances are your category is sold out:

https://www.bikereg.com/gpg2017

Cooper River.

4th Stop of the MAC. Buncha New Yorkers, and Kissenas, will be here. If not Gloucester, this is where you wanna be. Mostly flat, with all the 180 turns in the world. A few of us had a blast there last year.
