Driving through the streets of Baltimore to Druid Hill Park made Hotlist nostalgic. Somewhere, not too far from the race venue, sometime in the mid 1970s, his dad taught him how to ride a bike.
And on this weekend (in addition to 3 riders heading to race in Troy, NY) a handful of KCC crossers learned how to ride sandpits for rounds 3 and 4 of the MAC series racing in Baltimore, MD. 10 years after the first Charm City CX, organizers stepped up the difficulty rating with significant elevation changes, demoralizing and difficult sandpits, and even a superfluous flyover for good measure. And as the racers were shaking sand out of their shoes, the results from another good weekend of CX action have provided a little drama in a list that otherwise is somewhat stagnant due to a high number of racers taking the weekend off.
1. Michael Perlberg. Saturday’s 34th place result was solid and to some extent expected. Hard to get too excited about it, but hell, still a good result. But holy hell, Perlberg came back on Sunday and just absolutely crushed it with a stunning 6th place finish. It’s the kind of finish that would have earned him number 1 even if Konrad were still racing in a KCC kit (this weekend he was “full King Kog” and was off his racing form from last weekend). Mike's 6th is unquestionably the best KCC race finish of the year. If his old-man back holds up this season, and he continues to get these kinds of results he’s going to have to take it to the next level and a) race a few Verge New England events and/or b) take out a UCI license to race with the elites.

Todd McLoughlin. Racing in the same category, Todd was riding just a few places behind
Perlberg in the opening laps of day 2. But while Perlberg found his turbo boost
in fine working order, McLoughlin faded a touch to finish in 33rd place. Still
if you buy into crossresults rankings, it’s one of Todd’s top 3 performances in
the past two seasons and he's still better than most everyone else on the team.
3. Joe Mueller. No racing for Mueller this weekend, but he holds onto the Hotlist podium.
4. Joaquin C De Baca. Another non-racer this past weekend.
5. Jim Feehan. Back in action after a week off, Jim brought his crew down to cheer him on as he looks to make a strong run at the Master’s 55+ Mac Series racing. Jim ended his streak of top-10 finishes by following up Saturday’s 9th place with an 11th on Sunday. Still, strong and consistent riding will certainly see him hold good position in the MAC series competition.
6. Craig London. …and another dude not racing…
7. Jules Roazen. …and another…
8. David Stokes. …and another…jeesh this is getting boring.
9. Patrick Grehan. …and one more. If Patrick and the rest of the guys who took the weekend off don’t race again this last weekend in September, then they will lose their spots on the next Hotlist.
10. Marc Bertucco. This guy again? Normally a couple of 45th-ish place finishes wouldn’t earn you a spot on the hotlist, but anytime you start two rows from the back, in one of the hardest racing categories of the day, and not get lapped two days in a row by winner Roger Aspholm, then that’s at least “luke warm.” So until more of you guys start racing Bertucco is back on the list.
This coming weekend, New England Holy Week continues on the craggy coast of Massachusetts. Where the wind whips, the weather is thoroughly unpredictable, over one thousand racers and spectators will flood the park with all that is good and great about cyclocross. A disappointingly small handful of KCC racers will be making the trip north, while everyone else is skipping the big show and will be racing Town Hall and Westwood Velo instead. (Do they know something Hotlist doesn’t?) Regardless of where you are pinning on those numbers, it’s going to be another great weekend of competition and Hotlist can hardly wait for it all to start!
Thought about it...but I don't want anyone to get locked out of racing the next couple of weeks because of full fields. Also, if this guy places top 5 in our field and doesn't win his low crossresults points bring up the quality points for our race and will ultimately help me on my goal to getting good points for New England cat 3 call-ups after Providence. Besides, my CX camp nemisis has mysteriously disappeared from the start list this weekend, so I'm happy to have a new dude to "hate" this weekend.Jules said:Quit your whining and email the regional coordinator.
