I already mentioned that I'm not doing Independence this weekend(I'm doing Silk City)and can try to transfer my registration to any interested parties. It looks like I'm staying north on Sunday as well and racing in Hartford which means I can try and transfer my Granogue reg as well.

Rick- I'll be at both CT Cross races this weekend. Keep an eye out for me. I'll be hanging around before/after my race. See you there!

Sorry guys. I was literally falling asleep as I was working on SuperCross stuff last night sending to Myles. Last year's Hotlist would have planned today on using Peter's afternoon nap time to write it. This year, I've got VO2 max intervals on the schedule for afternoon playtime. But tonight, after Peter and Sarah go night-night I'll be able to get to it...if I'm not falling asleep myself.

Hotlist #2 2014 

 

Are we there yet? Hell, yes! No fewer than 18 Kissena Cycling Club-ers, across multiple racing categories, lined up to do battle at Nittany Lion Cross this past weekend. And for many, it was gut check time. A few had dabbled in pre-season clinics, others could claim weekend cross training sessions, two eager-beavers even raced a tune-up event in Massachusetts. But none could have been fully prepared for the oppressive humidity and stank-breath of the Nittany Lion beating down on our underprepared bodies and bikes on opening weekend of the UCI cross racing season.

 

And the results are in. Hotlist was watching and witnessed it all. There were some impressive performances, some head-scratching disappointments, equipment and body failures and everything in between. In other words, it was a standard weekend of cross racing.

 

Hotlist was tempted to give this week’s number one spot to Todd McLoughlin for sporting the scariest race face (http://www.pbase.com/dens/image/157299183/original) that I cannot unsee…ever. But this shit is real, so let’s get started. Who’s really number one?

 

1.    Joe Mueller. Bam. There I said it. Handsome Joe temporarily shed his school-boy good looks (see above picture where Joe has his own scowl going), put on race face and powered through two days of racing scoring 30^th and 25^th place points making him the early KCC leader in the MAC Cat 2/3/4 series points. He’ll have to work on stronger/craftier starts if he wants to crack the top 20 in the ultra competitive 2/3/4 fields though for now he’s our number one.

2.    Michael Perlberg. On day 1, when the heat and humidity was laying waste to most everyone on the day, Mike cranked out a hard-fought 20^th place. Arguably the single best KCC finish of the weekend. But day two, when the conditions were kinder, after a similarly solid start, Perlberg faded from a high of 21^st-ish position, then dropped out of the race completely. He reportedly was suffering from debilitating back pain. Which is a reminder that cyclocross is a whole-body sport and you aren’t training completely, you will suffer.

3.    Jim Feehan. This year, Jim gets to play with the 55+ racers, and on the first weekend of the year, it’s hard not to be impressed with the results. Despite not having done a single road race all year, the veteran cross racer was one of two KCC racers who can claim two top-10 performances on the weekend. His 8^th and 9^th place finishes at the start of a season in which he had no road racing intensity in his legs, lead Hotlist to think that even better performances are just around the corner.

4.    Joaquin C De Baca. Back in the 2/3/4 field, anyone watching would see 3 or 4 KCC racers pretty closely clumped throughout the day’s proceedings. Joaquin was one of those guys finishing just behind his teammates in 31^st place on both days. It’s a solid start to a season for a guy who spent most of last year racing the Cat 4s and confirms that he and his fellow 20-30-something finishers are in good shape to take it to the next level as the season rolls on.

5.    Todd McLoughlin. The perennial podium placer in last season’s Hotlists, suffers, if Hotlist is honest, somewhat from lofty expectations. Finishing in 29^th place, 45 seconds behind Perlberg on day 1 is not too shabby…for anyone not named Todd McLoughlin. Sunday he was a DNS due to work so didn’t get a chance to improve his ranking. McLoughlin reportedly may make an appearance in Charm City to bolster his rankings and his race fitness as he continues to assault the 2/3/4 field with that scary, scary race face of his.

6.    Marc Bertucco. After spending 2013 battling for results mostly in the teens, 20s and 30s, Bertucco takes his biggest “victory” to date in not once being called or mistaken for JP Partland enroute to 8^th and 3^rd place finishes in the Cat 4/5 races.

7.    Konrad Ratzmann. Suffering, like many of his KCC Cat 3 teammates, with poor call-up positioning, Ratzmann rode through heaps of unsuspecting Cat 2/3/4 riders to finish up at the back of the KCC Cluster, in 35^th place on Day 1. Day 2 started similarly and likely would have finished similarly when a rolled tubular with 1.5 laps to go made this his first DNF of the cross season.

8.    Jules Roazen. The crossresults.com favorite for Cat 4 victory on day 1, Roazen found his return from the splendor of a 16-month stay in the French countryside ruder than expected. Finishing 11^th on day one in the 4s is a rock solid result that 90 other guys in the Cat 4s would have loved to have, but for a guy who’s looking to go elbow to elbow with Joaquin, Mike, Joe, Todd and the rest of the cat 3s later this season, he’ll have to up his game.

9.    David Stokes. Racing with teammate Jim Feehan in the 55+ category, Stokes cranked hard enough to secure 19^th and 15^th places. A mechanical hampered his day one race results, but given the breakout year Stokes had last season, he suffers somewhat from lofty expectations too (He and McLoughlin should go out for drinks). It’s a good start, but Hotlist demands more.

10. Nelson Martins. Grabbing the last spot on this week’s Hotlist, Martins earns it with a 75^th place finish in a competitive cat 2/3/4 race earning him 449 crossresults.com points. He’ll have to improve though to fight off predicted hot competition from a group of experienced KCC racers in the 45+ category in future weeks.

 

This weekend, KCC reloads for another exciting weekend of racing in Southern New Jersey and Delaware. Gone are the UCI points and exciting afternoon spectating opportunities, but with the return of the notorious Granogue circuit filled with booby-trap turns, steep climbs and off-camber descents, Hotlist is eager to how everyone will handle this week’s unique challenges.

 

Remember, a week off from racing doesn’t mean you drop off the Hotlist, but spend two weeks away from cross racing and NO HOTLIST FOR YOU.

I'm not going to get all the placings right, so I won't even try, but I thought a few general updates from Independence Cross would be appreciated. Rain stayed away for all but the pro 123 race. And even then it was more of a heavy mist during their race. Chabanov and 10th place from crossvegas finisher Cameron Dodge were the class of the field today with Dodge dispatching of Chabs on the final run up the amphitheater of pain. Roger Aspholm rode in a solid but distant third place. Dan Strika raced to events back to back. Harry was in the 40+ cat 4 race and managed at some point to twist his ankle, and so didn't figure into the placings like we were hoping. Cat 3s had a strong crew of KCC, including Joe, Mike, Todd, Nelson, Konrad. Joe was ripping shit up early, riding second wheel from his 33rd place start. But rolled a tubular, borrowed a bike which he couldn't clip into, and fell back. Todd ended up being KCCs top finisher in 5th. Mike pulled out early and was a dnf. Not sure what happened there...maybe more back issues? Adam was in the Cat 5 race and seemed happy with his performance. Gwynna finished in 4th and was happy to have met her "top 50%" finish objectives. I raced the cat 4s and got beat by two dudes whom i should have handled. One guy was way in front and there was no catching him today. 4th place at this race, with this field, makes me grumpy.

I got 10th in the 5s. Struggled a bit on some of the turns, losing some
time after taking some bad lines. On one occasion, I wiped out. Generally
though I was able to pick up time in the amphitheater and the beach run.
Haven't uploaded the data yet, but there were a few times where I caught
myself dialing it back when I maybe should have been pushing it. That said,
I was also trying to preserve energy for the stadium and the beach.

All in all, I'm fine with the day. Would have preferred a better result,
but given the course -- which I wasn't really expecting until about a day
ago -- I'll take it.

Silk City CX in CT today: Got a last row start in the B's. Worked my way up to top 10/20. Got tangled up with guys trying to pass. Bike wouldn't pedal. Twisted my chain so had to drop out before end of first lap,
