I got 9th today in the 3/4 race in Hartford. Was sitting in 6th for most of the race but faded a bit midway. Overtook a guy last lap for 9th.

There was a very steep hill in there I ride everytime. Also, front row starts are very important. Everyone from 1-10 was within 30 seconds if each other. Gaps at the start more or less held all race. I could still see the winner on the final lap when it opened up. Anyway, fine race. A flat grass crit mostly. Happy with my result. I figure I would've top 10 or top 15'd yesterday's B race too if my bike didn't blow up.

If anyone wants to race Whirlybird Cross Oct 11th let me know. I won't be able to make it and have a spot registered. It is transferable so let me know. Thanks!

Had a great time today at what I will call my first real cross race.  Thanks to Jules for the super nice Van Dessel to ride and to Marc for the race info.  That was a beautiful and challenging course and even though it hurt a lot, it was fun. I'm pretty sure I was getting quite a bit faster with each lap.  I don't have any real info on the race results.  I know Patrick, Konrad, Dan, and many others were up at the front of the group, but I don't know how they ended up.  I'll be working on getting a bike very soon, and see you guys at the next one.

Great day out at Granogue.  I can't find results, but I'm pretty sure Konrad got in the top 10 in the B race, which is a huge result.  I was just behind that, right out of the top 10.  Not sure where Patrick finished, but it looked like it was up there.  Marc and Jules double teamed it in the early race, and both just missed the podium, but were in the top 10.  Dale looked exhausted and happy when I saw him at the end.

Anyone heading to Gloucester Friday night? I'm trying to go for the entire weekend and need a ride, room, etc. Have money TRAVELLING WITH NO BIKES just two gear bags which fit nearly anywhere. I can get to a pick up point within reason. Me not racing. Could do a pit job for a race or two but will be shooting. I need to stay through the elite races on sunday. I usually need an hour after the men's finish to get my pics.

Hotlist #3 2014

 

A day at the beach? Yes indeed. For most KCC CXers, week two’s action moved to southern New Jersey where they would get their first taste of seasonal sand. Oh glorious sand. From a 50 meter beach run to the seemingly endless meters of sand-filled double track winding its way through the woods, Independence Cross was a delightful course that challenged but did not flummox. Sunday saw the glorious return of a diabolical race venue somewhere in Fancy-pants, Delaware, that reminded participants that yes, you still have to climb, yes, you better learn how to ride off-cambers and yes, you better pre-ride that course because, uhm…booby traps. One highlight of the weekend was the return to cross racing by Dan Reiners, and intro to all the good stuff for Cat 1 roadie and mentor Dale Suttle. Welcome to Thunderdome gentlemen, we’re happy to have you in the line-up.

 

Over two days of racing, including a couple of outliers who ventured north to race in the state where gas prices are reeedonkulous, this week’s Hotlist is an exercise in destruction and mass re-ordering as riders continue to find and settle into their form this early season.

1.    Konrad Ratzmann. Well folks, team King Kog is good at many things in cyclocross, but getting their new “recruits” skinsuits is not one of them. So lucky us, we’ve got the Green Mountain Killer for one more week. And what a weekend it was. 8th at Independence was solid enough, but coming through with the best individual performance at Granogue with a 10th place finish in the B race earns Konrad number 1 this week.

2.    Todd McLoughlin. After a rough opening week, Todd appears to be back on track. Hotlist would have LOVED to see how the rail-thin racer would have faired at Granogue, but he came to Independence with a point to prove and his 5th place finish was the best of any KCC “B” rider on that day.

3.    Joe Mueller. Hampered by an devious combination of mechanical strife on both days, Joe’s results don’t reflect the fact that while his bike was working, he was KCCs best placed rider in the B races. He’s got a few weeks to sort things out before his next planned race, and Hotlist wouldn’t be surprised if big results are on the horizon.

4.    Joaquin C De Baca. Coming through with the B team’s second best performance at Granogue finishing in 13th place puts the Groom in prime position to make a run at the Hotlist podium in coming weeks. Before he walks down the aisle with a deep fried Chilie Relleno in one hand and a margarita in the other, he’s going to be competing against the toughest competition of the year at New England’s almighty, all powerful, Holy Week.

5.    Craig London. So for reasons only known to him, Craig was one of just two KCC racers who went all “lone wolf” and took on the New England racers looking to keep their legs sharp before Holy Week, by racing in Connecticut and earning an 8th place and 352 crossresults points in the cat 3/4 race, which frankly ain’t too shabby. Hotlist would have loved to have seen him race at Independence and/or Granogue, but then his job would be easy. And ain’t nothing about cyclocross easy.

6.    Michael Perlberg. Surviving on the list based on a strong 20th place finish in the first race of the year, Perlberg was a DNF on Saturday and a DNS on Sunday. Still Hotlist has the feeling that if he lined up tomorrow to race, he’d still ride away from 7-10 pretty easily. But, he’s scheduled to race Charm City this weekend and we’ll all be watching to see if he can put together his first complete race since the first race of the season.

7.    Jules Roazen. Coming through with a big 4th place at Granogue against at Cat 1 Canadian Mountain Biker, a mysterious cyclist with no USA Cycling records, but some UK Strava files, Jules is on his way to proving that he’s on track to taking his Cat 3 upgrade and racing well with the rest of KCC Killer Kat 3s.

8.    David Stokes. With another 4th place finish in the books, and this one on a legendarily hard course, David gets the nod over his fellow master’s competitor, Jim Feehan this week.

9.    Jim Feehan. Where was Jim this weekend? Training, I imagine, as he’s got stiff competition ahead in Charm City coming up. One week off, he holds onto his top 10 position in the hotlist.

10. Patrick Grehan. Bouncing back from a back-o-the-pack performance at Nittany, the Cat 4 crosser proved he belongs in the 2/3/4 fields with a 32nd place finish out of 64.

 

In just a few days, MAC series racing returns to action in the original home of Hotlist. (Yes, he will be wearing his 1970s era “Baltimore is Best” button) Lots of interesting storylines to follow in Charm City. Plenty of KCC racers signed up for this one and we eagerly await to see how the interclub battles will play out. And no need to get court approval for a wire tap, just stay tuned to the forum for evening updates. And for those who have irrational fear of salty sea air and blue crabs, there’s plenty of room up in Troy, NY for some day-of registration.

Plans have changed for charm this weekend.

@nelson probably me. I'm signed up for the 11:20am Cat 3 race. There's a small chance I might decide to race prospect instead.

Just RSVP'd. Totally worth a day off, even if the practice ends up being kinda weak.
