Mike, I have at least one spot for Providence in my car, but am not yet sure of timing. Based on my start time, I'll probably drive up the night before. Driving back Sunday afternoon. Let me know if you're interested.

Test your legs against the best...the 35+ racers in New England are a step above. Maurice Ghamano is usually in the running for podium in the MAC races, in New England, he's fighting for top 15-ish.

It doesn't look promising - Luka is at my folks that weekend and for some reason, sitting around the park watching a bunch of guys race bikes isn't warming the cockles of Liz's heart. Or her cankles. If Luka were around, I'd be given a pass to go, but it looks to be expensive to go and not exciting for Liz. So, if one B&B pans out as available, we may be in, otherwise, probably not...
On the flip side - Next year - Providence or Glouchester.

consistently the cheapest. downside is they have limited hours on Sunday and the cars are sometime not quite spotless. not exactly gross but you might find half a cheese doodle under the seat.

Re rental cars...there are many awesome things about living in Washington Heights near the GWB. One of them is access to 2 different rental car agencies in Fort Lee, NJ whose rates are much MUCH better than Manhattan. This weekend, I'm at about $140 for 3 days. There have been weekends where I've gotten as low as $25/day. Mostly the the 40-ish/ day range is the norm.
I don't know what Brooklyn kids do.

I am driving out with family tonight for 9am Whirlybird. Gonna hang out in Philly tomorrow after the race.
I finally figured out how to race through mud last weekend in Harriman, but still haven't figured out how to negotiate turns in mud.
Any advice?
Either way, should be fun!

I think I'm in for the B's ... sorry, 2/3/4. It's still a bit touch and go with work, but it looks like I'll be clear. I'll probably leave from Washington Heights sometime between 8 and 9 AM.

Whirlybird 2012 Race Report:
Almost didn't do this one; was sick all week and feeling pretty spent the week before so I was coming in with basically not having turned a pedal in 10+ days.
Truth be told if I hadn't promised Jeff a ride I'd have packed it in. I still felt a little sick as was secretly afraid of making myself more so.
That said, I set my alarm for 4:50 and stumbled out to the car with my bike & gear bag while the stars were still out.
We stopped for some muffins & whatnot and drove through the barren highways talking of all manner of things - one of the pleasures of racing are the free roaming discussions you can have on the there & back - mostly "there" though as "back" is often dominated by woulda-coulda-shouldas.
We got there, pinned out numbers and around 8:15 we started with the warmup/hot laps before our 9am start.
The course was amazing; not as wet as we'd feared/hoped but fast, twisty and technical - there was a hill that the course went up & down the face of - much like a surfer goes up & down a wave.
After spending 10+ minutes trying to just finish the first lap I found someone fixing a stake and told him what a great course it seemed to be.
"Yeah" he said, "we tried to make it really Euro - you know, you've just got to stay on the gas the whole time."
I have no idea about the various "flavors" of course but the words would turn out to be prophetic.
I got a first row callup, and when the whistle blew I jumped on the gas and let loose. Hole Shot! "Holy Cow!" I thought, "what now?"
First in a sprint of any kind is not something I'm used to and with Cyclocross they put the sprint at the start of the race - I had no idea what to do.
I just put my head down and hammered, and cursed my lack (perceived or not) fitness and my mediocre handling skills.
I stayed first until about the 2 minute mark when two or three familiar guys from Nittany passed me in some of the technical bits. I hung on and think I heard Stokes shout something about "tenth" at one point.
We were the lead group for sure and before long I was on the back end of it, with a pretty big gap behind me.
Mine was a clean race, with just a couple of bobbles; my low tire pressure probably saved me (I think I ran 25psi in each) but the subsequent "bouncing" after my bobbles was a little shocking.
(I did see one or two guys lowside really hard)
With about a lap to go I came un-glued from the back of the lead train and knew I was somewhere between 10th & 12th.
I could see nobody behind me except one lone guy far, far back and I did my best to ride hard but carefully knowing I could keep my position in the finish.
I did, and came in 11th (although results took over an hour to post)
Overall I felt really blocked; still sick, unable to do "openers" the day before if you'd asked me I'd have said it was an "8/10" effort.
To my utter shock & delight however I broke my all-time power records for 10, 20 and 30 minutes. The race was over (for me) in about 33 minutes.
This bodes well for when I'm no longer sick, but also reminds me how far I have to go in bike-handling skills; I doubt all 10 guys who beat me rode nearly as hard.

Reg'd for the Saturday 4 race at Supercross, the Sunday KCCCXC at 7:30 a.m., and the Sunday 2/3/4 race at 9:30 a.m. Didn't think I could manage racing the first and last races of the day.

I just signed up for Marty's Cross on Saturday the 20th. Doing the 40+ cat 4 race at 11:00am. Let me know if you want a ride out. Probably plan on getting there by 10:00 and could stay through the Cat 4 race which goes off at 1:15.
