I started commuting by bike to work again May 5th.  Yesterday, after one month of almost daily riding in, they took my handlebars - unscrewed the faceplate of my stem, loosened the brake screws, took the bars with brake levers and wires still attached.

Ugh. Dislike. Not sure, but I think all companies/buildings of a certain size are required to allow you bring the bike inside. Don't know what that size is though.

Bruce that's an empty feeling to find that, sorry to hear. I locked my beater road bike on 5th Ave every day for a couple of years. My tip is to put two-part epoxy in the allen bolts. If you need to get the part off you can dig it out with a pick, but it foils the bike courier with an allen wrench. The other suggestion is to make your bike look more like a bike courier bike — it basically says think twice, I may be back in 5 minutes to beat your ass.

Bruce that sucks. I've also heard of people using a glue gun and a ball bearing and sticking it into allen bolts. You have to heat up the glue to get it out but it's another way of foiling the thief.

Thanks, all!  While the law says if the building can, it must allow bikes in (unless it receives a waiver), it doesn't say anything about the company making the request - no law that a company needs to ask.  I've spoken with our facilities director and VP of HR.  If they haven't put in the request, then the law doesn't apply.  I showed the bolts I picked up off the sidewalk to my VP and he's going to speak with our CTO.  That's what it's come to, talking with the CTO of a multinational, multibillion dollar company, about bringing my bicycle inside.  Go figure.

Ugh, that sucks @Bruce. Knowing the company of which you speak, I can't say I'm hugely surprised (but really, I am a little... are the other bike commuters there all locking up outside?). Of _course_ that's what the CTO should be doing...

Thanks, Tim.  I talked to the people who sit around me, mostly graphic designers, and apparently there are a lot of people riding in, either locking their bikes up outside, or using Citibike, even though they have bikes, because they're not allowed inside.  I was surprised to find there were so many people.  I thought about rallying them to the cause, but man, this is about bringing bikes inside a huge building. . . 

Other option is a folder under your desk.
